GSM CHANNELS

• In a standard GSM Network, under each connection, there are 4 (pairs) of digital channels. – The first channel is used for Operator LogoOperator Logo and Text Msg.

(SMS). – The second channel is generally reserved for Voice CallsVoice Calls – The third one is the DataData channel viz. Fax, HSCSDFax, HSCSD Internet,

etc. and – The fourth channel is reserved for Security Security and Administrative

Purpose.

• In a ground telephone lines the same connection could be used for voice as well as Fax and Data( Internet) calls. But in a GSM connection the DATA Channel would have to be activated by the Network Provider such as Airtel, Vodaphone, etc. against subscription fees, before that could be used for any Data Call.

• The handset also must have the Data Call capability (such as built-in modem, etc.) for accessing the Internet or Data Calls.
