Who ca n t e l l what a year may b ri ng f or th ?1986 closed on a rather somber note for me, fo r se ver al reasons.

The f i r s t was tha t a t Christmas t ime, I went back to Hiroshima to c lo seou t my house there. The church members at Hesaka decided that they wantedto continue without missionary leadership, so Bil l and Betty Turner, whohad gone back to take my place, decided to go to Machida Tokyo area)to continue the work Mark and Lynn Pratt had begun. So, I went to Japanon Dec. 16th, met Sachiko a t Tokyo Sta t ion , and we went to Hiroshimatogether. The Turners had already packed up 70 boxes of books, papers ,and f i l e s to be stored i n Osaka, so Sachiko an d I ta ck le d th e r e s t : Xs o r t e d , an d she packed.

also met with the landlord of ou r meetingroom, to thank him for ou ruse of that room fo r so long, and changed over the lease to the JapaneseChris tians. Various other legal details were taken care of, and I said myfarewells to the church members at a Christmas Eve pot-luck supper.

I came back to the States fo r a belated Christmas family gatheringmyfifs t one at home for 7 years. The joy of.that blessing was shadowed, though,by the results of my brother Lee*s check-up the following day; his cancerhad re-occured, and he was started immediately on a chemotherapy program.Every third weekend unt i l May, I was able to go t o Ind ianapo li s to be withh is f am ily d ur in g t reatments , which seem to have been successful . I t was along hard haul , and I was thankful to be able to be there with them.

Second semester a t Cincinnati Christian Seminary was again busy andproductive. I had the second half of Music History and Literature, alsoAdvanced Theory, fo r which the final was a modern composition; at last , Iwas able to f inish a choral se t t ing of John 6:48-51, which I had s tar tedparts ofjyears ago. For Dr. Foster s class on Bible Translation, I researchedthe history of Bible translation in Japanese, which resulted in a lengthypaper and l o t s o f v alu ab le informat ion. I a l so audi ted a c l a s s i n ReformationHistory to f i l l in my knowledge of church history, and one in photographyto sharpen my sk i l l s . There was a lo t of hard work invo lved , but I was

    ;rewarded with a place a t the top of the Dean s l i s ta far cry from my -mental ou t look a y e a r e a r l i e r

In May, I made th e decision I had been agonizing over for quite some time

whether to return to Japan or not. Although I had tentatively planned togo to Osaka to the Bible Seminary there- in Jan. of 1988, I f e l t l i t t l epeace within about those plans. Then my father was hospitalized again in May,reveal ing the root of my insecure feel ings. After r e as s ur a nc e f ro m .t heRising Sun missions committee tha t they would recommend t ha t the churchcontinue a support ing r e l a t i o ns h ip whenever I do re turn to the missionfield, I decided to extend my furlough indefini telyto get a job and stayc l o s e t o home f o r a w h i l e .

Invest igat ing teaching posi t ions was my f i r s t tack, but as I p ra ye d a bo utjobs, I wondered i f I couldn t find something u sing J ap anese, in order notto lose the speaking abi l i ty I ve worked so hard on a l l t he se y ea rs .So, a chance conversation with Lynn Prat t lead me to a gentleman in Covingtonwho knew of a jo b opening, for which he sent in my resume...and to make a
