Please s end a long with this

f orm cop ie s

of

recommenda tions from

churches which will encourag

other

churches to s uppo rt you r missionary work. There

are churches which

will not a llow

a

visiting

missionary to

speak un less a church recommendat ion can be

shown.

Since i t is

impos

sible for any one per son to

know

a l l Chri s ti ans in

t he wor ld ,

this recommendation by

a

respon

sible New Testament church is a vital help in persuading others of your wor th iness and th e

valu

of your

mission.

Mission Services

s tands ready

to

help you inform HORIZONS readers

about

your

church recommendat ions. Since the

church

is sending you

to

the

mission

field  Acts 13:1-

and will help provide

the

necessary

needs

on the f ie ld ,

naturally the

church should share

the

credit in

your

miss ionary minis try . One of

the

ways that the church can do

this

is

to

share the

conviction

regarding

your

missionary ministry with others.

Certainly, their

words will

help

convince others

regarding

the worthiness of your work.

Please

help

MISSION SERVICES to

spread your news through

HORIZONS,

Packets

and

Slide

library by sending

your

church

recom

mendations

as soon as

possible.

Thanks. Send what you have now, and

A CRY

FOR

PEACE

In the hear t o f Hiroshima today i s the Peace

Park.

Besides

th e Atom Bomh Dome

and th e

Peace Museum, t h e r e

a re

s eve r a l

o t h e r

s ign if ic an t s tr u ct u re s .

One

is

the

Children s

Peace Monument.

Decora ted with

thousands o f

folded

pape r

cranes

it i s

a

memor

i a l to a l l

young

people

who

suf fered

from

th e homh.

But

it was

not

erec ted

un t i l 1958» af te r the death of Sadako Sasaki .

Sadako

was only two a t

the

time

the bomb

exploded

a

mile

from

her

home,

and

she

seemed unharmed. She

appeared

to

be

a normal,

hea l thy g i r l un t i l she

was

in

th e s ix th

grade .

Then s ud de nly s he

developed the signs of l eukemia so

wel l

known among survivors .

I t

is

said that Sadako was very

brave in the hospital.

  I

don t

want to die, she

wrote in

her diary. Yet she managed to laugh and sing when her classmates came to vis i t

h e r

and she fo lded pape r c ranes .

There

is

an

old belief in

Japan

that

a

crane

can

live

a thousand

years,

and i f

you ll

fold a thousand cranes, they will protect you from i l lness. Sadako did not

have

time

or

strength to

reach a thousand. In October of

1955

when she had

made

only 9^^, she died.

Her

friends

added

th e m issin g cran es

and

placed

them

a l l

in

the

coffin

with

her .

When

the

young people of Hiroshima could no longer

bear

watching

their fr iends d ie

slowly over th e

years,

th ey ros e up to do something

about

i t . They would

erect

a monu

ment to Sadako

in the Peace Park

to remind

the

grown-up

world

what

the bomb had

done to

the

f i rs t children who

experienced

i t .

They

started

a campaign

to raise

money from

a ll

over Japan. They collected

the

miraculous sum of  20,000 and hired a famous sculptor in

Tokyo

to des ign t h e i r moniiment

fo r

them.

I t is a

powerful

memorial. Atop an oval

granite

pedestal,

symbolizing

the fab led mountain to

paradise ,

Sadako

stands,

holding a gol

den

crane

in

her

ou ts t r e tched

arms.

Beneath

her

a re co lo r

ful paper l e i s each a

thousand

cranes, that people from a ll

over

th e

world have

placed

there

as

of fe r ings .

At th e base a re th e words;  Th is i s ou r c ry t h i s

in
