Awareness for Autism

In India, the state of awareness of the disorder called autism is very dim. 20 years ago, it

was unheard of. Many cases were being shunned as shy or underdeveloped case, but none

were being given the right treatment. The poor kids turned into adults, but their condition

never improved. Many families suffered in silence, because even the doctors had no clue. It

is quite sad to see the state of medical facility in India. A case as evident as autism is not

given the priority and treatment it requires, thereby depriving of a normal adulthood.

But in places around the world, autism is being recognised and treated. Children born in

that part are perhaps lucky. It just brings to one conclusion about India. Apart from its fight

for malnutrition and poverty among its people, India must update itself with various types

of medical disorders that are very well known in other parts. Doctors, specialists and

scientists must work in unison along with the government medical authority. Some things

that must change in India with respect to autism-

1. Awareness- People more specifically expectant mothers must be made aware of all kinds of

disorders that her new baby might develop. Genetics and autism may not even be related,

so a healthy mother may not necessarily bear a healthy child.

2. Medical help- Doctors, paediatricians must be capable of identifying the symptoms and in a

position to refer to treatment facility centres.

3. Treatment centres- Education for autistic children should be a common sight in India, and

not just in the main cities. Education centres, treatment facilities and specialists must be

available too. Treatment could come in the form of motivational therapies, behavioural

workshops and educational classes.

4. Children- Autism in children, if identified, can be treatable. Symptoms must be closely

monitored and love and care shown in abundance.

5. Education- Education should never be deprived. No doubt a difficult task, but specific

educational skills have been developed for teaching autistic children. Support for autistic

individuals must come in the form of innovative educational therapies.

6. Love- Parents must learn to accept their children as they are, and still count them as a

blessing from God. No one is born perfect, and must take in every step they can to ensure a

good recovery. Patience and awareness can help them sail through the rough seas. Above

all, love and care must be showered upon them, helping the kid at every stage possible.

7. Government- Help from government in terms of subsidy with medical bill and treatment

fees must be ensured to poor families. In addition government should demand for extensive

research into such cases, and make every hospital aware of this condition.
