Friends of Whitchurch RoadCemetery, Wem

Annual General Meeting, Monday, 24 March 2014Chairman’s Report for 2013

The Friends Committee have had a more relaxed year knowing all the exterior renovationwork to the chapel was completed last year. Our efforts have turned this year to maintainingthe 2.7 acre cemetery.Despite difficult weather conditions, the contractors P&W of Oswestry have managed to keepthe grass cut and the whole area looking neat and tidy. We plan to continue with P&W forthe year 2014 (accepting a small increase in grass cutting costs) with financial help from thePCC, Wem Town Council, Wem Rural Council and the War Graves Commission. In the springtime five volunteers painted with wood preserver the 200 metres of fencing onthe north side of the cemetery. The team used the paint remaining from the LotterySustainability Grant. On two ‘tidy up’ days committee members worked to remove fallen branches, leaves andweeds etc. Our task that we have to deal with is the compost heap and the wheelie bins.Unfortunately, despite the large sign requesting ‘plant material only’ time has to be spentremoving unsuitable and non bio degradable rubbish (i.e. wire wreaths, plastic flowers.plastic wrapping paper etc) from the compost heap and putting such material into the wheeliebins for collection. A big thank you goes to John and Jenny Leese for doing this chore on aregular basis. Thank you to Veolia for donating a new wheelie bin, replacing our broken one- we now have three – and thank you to Peter Griffiths for emptying them.Four committee meetings have been held during the year with an average attendance of 11members. The coffee morning held in June at The Senior Club in Chapel Street was a littledisappointing financially, with not so many visitors attending. Many thanks to all committee members who have put in hard work especially the Treasurerand the 2 Secretaries. Thanks to Hazel Adkins for arranging and placing poppies on all thewar graves for Remembrance Day.Looking forward to 2014 I hope we can encourage new members onto ‘The Friends’committee so that we can move forward. We need to sustain this peaceful area for the townof Wem and the many visitors who come to see and tend their loved ones’ graves. TheSweet Pea Festival brings people from different parts of the country and many visit the graveof Henry Eckford. The Friends group have put in great but rewarding effort to reach this stage of the project atthe cemetery; we hope this momentum will continue in the future.

Kathleen Chesworth

Please note that we are always grateful for donations to help us to continue ourwork. Donations can be made by contacting the Treasurer on 01939 235559.

The GOAL Community Group of Wem(Getting Older Adults on Line)

In May 2013 our group started free computer lessons in The Castle for Senior Clubmembers and this has been very successful. We formed our group (Getting Older Adults on Line) earlier this year so that wecould apply for grants to purchase computer equipment in order to achieve our aim ofhelping people in Wem and the local area who are disabled or over 55, become morecomputer aware.

Our thanks to:The Barber Trust, Local Joint Committee, The Allen Lane Foundation, TheRotary Club of Wem and District and the Shropshire Housing Group for theirfinancial support. Shropshire RCC in particular Lisa Darkin who helped us get offthe ground by lending us laptops, providing us with booklets and introducing us to theonline Learn My Way syllabus. Last but not least are Richard and Dee Lear of TheCastle who were good enough to supply us with a room and Wifi at no expense to thegroup so that we could start our project.Classes are held, free of charge, on Tuesday mornings from 9.15 to 11.45 in thecommunity room at The Castle. If you are interested please contact one of the tutorslisted below. We also hold sessions for residents at Roden Lodge on Monday afternoons from 2pmto 4pm.You are encouraged to bring your own laptop/tablet with you for the training, whichyou do at your own pace but we do have equipment available for use.If you are unable to visit us due to being homebound/disabled we will be willing tocome to your home and teach you.

There is no set time limit; you can take as long as it takes. At the end of the courseyou will receive a certificate acknowledging the subjects you have covered. If you have purchased or been given a computer/laptop/tablet and don’t know how touse it come and see us and we can help get you started. The course covers the basics of computers and shows how to use Emails and surf theinternet safely.

For those who are homebound the benefits of shopping on line are many and use ofEmails and the internet opens many new horizons. In the very near future, the government have said they intend most Governmentaspects/ benefits/road licenses/TV licenses/ Car tax etc will be done only on line.Help us to help you.

Dyb dyb dyb?? Ging Gang Gooly? The traditional scouting phrases can still be heard butthe movement is evolving and is more relevant today than ever.

Nationally Scouting is growing with a UK membership total of over 550,000 making it thelargest co-educational youth movement in the country. There has been a continuousincrease for the last nine years and for the last two years has seen the biggestgrowth of any county in the country.

I am proud to say that has been at the forefront of this growth in our County. InJanuary 2012 when we last wrote in the Wemian there were 10 Scouts, 23 Cubs and 15Beavers; in September 2014 our numbers are 24, 38 and 38 respectively with a waiting listin all three sections.

Why are we growing? Put simply, we try to give the children the best experience of thewidest range of activities we can and allow them to learn by doing, in the process forminglife-long friendships. This year our Beavers (6/7 year olds) learned to climb on abouldering wall, went fishing, learned to make a cup of tea safely and how to make a snackwhich they could then take on our walk round Colemere. They slept overnight atJungleland, Telford, with 150 other Beavers from our District and had the best fun ever! Our Cubs (8/10 year olds) learned Zumba, did a recycling walk, a hedge and pond wildlifesurvey and had great fun bowling as well as participating in the District camp withapproximately 200 other Cubs. Our Scouts (10/14 year olds) walked from Wem toHawkstone, and back, for their camp carrying all their kit…which certainly teaches you topack lightly! They have started planning and fundraising for their trip to the worldJamboree in Iceland in 2017.

All this can only happen if we have people who are willing to give up their time to help andwe are very lucky to have a fantastic team of leaders (who enjoy every minute!) but as Imentioned above there are waiting lists in all sections. It makes me very sad to think thereare children who may not get the chance of joining us because we have not recruitedenough leaders……

– which is where come in! ?

We need more adults and young people. We are grateful for as much or as little time asyou can spare. Previous experience is useful but not necessary as the Scout Associationoffers training to ensure we keep the children safe. Young People can do their D of Evolunteering with us and we participate in the Young Lions in Service awards, both ofwhich help on C.V.s or University applications. If you are interested we would love to hearfrom you. Please ring our Group Scout Leader Tim on 07802 735769 or me on 01939235703 for more details.

Finally we would like to say !! Scouting should be available to allchildren regardless of ability to pay & we ensure no-one misses out. We can only do thiswith help. Wem is an incredibly generous town and hugely supportive – there is nowherelike it. We are very grateful for the assistance we receive from local people, local charities, the local council and the masonic lodges.

Yours in Scouting,

Sue Wilton-Morgan

BROCK-Evelyn was born on 15th September 1867. Her parents John Edward Simpson and Anne ChristianSimpson (nee Bluett) were married at Kirk Briddan, Douglas Isle of Man a year before. John Edward, adeeply religious man, was related to the Simpsons of Castle Bank who belonged to the Society ofFriends (Quakers) over several generations. Anne Christian’s father was a Barrister and High Sheriff ofDouglas on the I.O.M and Vicar General, acting as Judge in the Ecclesiastical Court on the island. Herfather’s career was in the Lancashire cotton industry, working as a Broker travelling extensively inEurope, where daughter Evelyn had a lot of her education. Giving her fluency in the French andGerman languages. She trained to be a Governess. Unfortunately she contracted rheumatic fever at theage of sixteen which must have weakened her but she had a tremendous spirit.

Married at Garstang Parish Church, North Lancs in 1897 to William Ashton, a cotton miller’s son fromDarwen, she moved with her husband a few months later to take over the running of Soulton HallFarm. Straight into the deep end would be an apt appraisal of their new situation! William knew littleabout farming and Evelyn had produced seven children by 1906. She brought them up in thewonderful environment of love, discipline and respect within the benign setting of rural Shropshire, anoasis of nature and low crime. The children benefited from her governess training as extra schoolingwas given by her at home, and of course her command of French and German meant that her familyhad some fluency too.

In 1920 she moved to Brockhurst Farm where her passion for gardening and being of service to thelocal community blossomed, the pressure of bringing up her family having now eased off. Shecontinued to attend regular Sunday services at St Luke’s Church, Weston under Redcastle where shehad always worshipped, but now took an interest in St Peter’s Church Lee Brockhurst too. Shecontinued her interest in the Catholic Apostolic Church (a short lived unique church started in 1835stemming from the teachings of Edward Irving and based on the nicene creed, with its twelve leaders, the Apostles.) She travelled to their Manchester Based place of worship once a month.

Surrounding herself with literature that promoted Christian values including little booklets with titlessuch as Goodwill, Endeavour and Compassion she engaged her wonderful mindset to hands on helpfor poor rural families in the local villages and hamlets, particularly at Christmas time, when wickerhampers were filled with nutritious food and she would travel around in her pony carriage delivering tothe door these gifts, much to the appreciation of the recipients, who at that time were not covered by aWelfare State.

In mid-summer three shire horses and three drays (flat trailers) were taken down to Wem and loadedup with children and brought back to the farm where they were entertained in a grass field near thefarm house; games were organised for them and a big picnic was provided. They were returned toWem later in the day. Health and Safety regulations were not a problem in those days! Respect for theperson in charge of the horses and some common sense got them by.

Sadly, by 1930 her health deteriorated, a consequence of that early bout of rheumatic fevercompounded by six pregnancies and her endeavours with family and community; she always gave100%, and spent her last two years quietly at home, surrounded by her loving husband and family.

Her passing was recognised by St Luke’s Weston under Redcastle where a unique family memorialwas given, a new church organ. There is a brass plaque above the keyboard saying “To the Glory ofGod and in Memory of Evelyn Ashton”. The congregation at St Peter’sLee Brockhurst also recognised her good works and a lectern wasgiven in her memory. A bible was also given by husband William whowas deeply saddened by her loss.

The inscription on her grave says, “I would see Jesus” “ I sleep but myheart awaketh” Evelyn embodied many of the attributes of perfect lifesetting by example the values that bring true happiness and peace. Iwish I had known her whilst she was alive!

I am delighted to report that the total raised for the 2013 Poppy Appeal in the Wem areaas at July 2014 stands at £7668.09. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Appeal. Ihave recently attended a Poppy Appeal Organisers Conference, at which we were informedthat the total raised in Shropshire stands at £367,400.17 which is an amazing amount for arural county. It is hoped that nationally £37m will have been raised by the end of thefinancial year. The RBL spends £83m pa. on welfare, so that leaves a shortfall of £45m,which has to be found from other sources. There are many fund raising events taking placein support of The RBL especially in this centenary year of the start of World War 1. Pleasedo show your support if you can. There is to be a competition for young writers to compose an essay or poem entitled "My1914". If any young person would like to enter, I will be pleased to supply them with furtherdetails. Shropshire actor John Challis will be the judge. The guest speaker at The PAO Conference was Capt. Nick Beighton (Rtd), a Shropshire ladwho had served in the Royal Engineers. Nick had always been very active and a keensportsman. He joined the Shrewsbury Cadets, and did his training at Sandhurst with PrinceWilliam. In April 2009, Nick was posted to Helmand Provence in Afghanistan. During thistour of duty, he was unfortunate to stand on an IED. He suffered 30 separate injuries, needed 36 pints of blood and lost both his legs. On returning to the UK, he spent time atSelly Oak and Headly Court, and these rehabilitation centres helped him to come to termswith his change of circumstances, to regain his fitness and confidence and to learn that lifewas still worth living. It took him 12-18 months to get to know who he was again and todecide what to do next.He started rowing with Guildford Rowing Club, and from there he went on to compete inthe 2012 London Paralympic Games, where he won a bronze medal. In June he was part ofa group who became the first to attempt to go from Lands End to John O'Groats in astraight line. They covered 1400km in 28 days, by walking, climbing mountains, cycling andkayaking, all in aid of Blessma, the charity for limbless veterans. He is now training with theGB canoeing team with the aim of competing in the 2016 Paralymic Games, and winning agold medal!Nick told us that the lessons he has learnt are- disabilities don't define us, achievements doand achievement is a state of mind. You should have no excuses- life is hard sometimes, but never give up, and always take positives from experiences. Nick said he is proud tohave served his country both in the Army and at the Paralympics, and his favourite saying isfrom Sir Edmund Hilary, who said "It's not the mountain we conquer, it's ourselves"Nick concluded by thanking everyone who helps support the Poppy Appeal for giving himthe chance to learn to live again, and he reminded us that there are many other ex-servicepersonel, facing the next 60-70 years with the loss of 2 or 3 limbs and they will need oursupport too. Nick was a very inspirational young man and it was so encouraging to hearthat the money we help to raise is used to make such a difference to peoples lives and howmuch they appreciate all our efforts on their behalf.Ruth Comerford PAO. 01939234287..

WEM ADOSI have just spent a lovely evening at the Stage Door watching an enchantingperformance by our young members, aged 7 to 11years. I am so delighted to seeso many new faces shining with enthusiasm, singing and dancing as theyperformed the musical play “Dragon” This was beautifully produced by our ownsisters’ act, Tess Barclay and Kate Price. They didn’t miss a trick in producing yetanother show that is such a great credit to our society and the town too. It must besaid that they were so well supported by a great back stage crew, the number ofcostumes that had been made beggars belief, when you realise the cast of 24 allhad at least one, and some had more you stand back in amazement. The youngpeople all made such an effort I can’t possibly pick out individuals, so here goeswith the cast list. Charlie Jones. Emily Ashley. Oliver Towers. Brodie Ashton.Darcie Connacher. Anna Claddingbole. Freya G. Dickens. Emma Haston. ElsaMarsh. Syddie Barclay. Alysha O’Rahilly. Alice Coburn. Louise Green. BenjaminMeason. Poppy McKirgan. Maggie Burley. Finnley Fine. Milly Hill. Katie Jones.Oscar Edmondson. Harriet Hanmer. Stacy Hose. Sophia Liley. Elliot Long. Allthese talented actors so ably supported by an equally talented back stage crew, and how splendid to see that so many of these are members of the older group, what tremendous team work by all starting with Jenny Colclough. RosemaryFenn-Wiggin. Andy Jones. Anna Latham. Spencer Radford. Hannah Schupp.Sarah Thomas. Allen Crowe. Judy Fox. Naomi Latham. Boo Latham. JackieSchupp. Lizzie Sinclair. Pat Williams. We had our A.G.M in June, when Allen Crowe took over as Chair, with thewelcome addition of three new members (young ones too!) Bella Wilson, thegrand-daughter of our long serving Nancy, how proud she would have been, AlishaJayne Mackey our local dance mistress, and Naomi Latham. I hope they will lookback with as much pleasure as we older members, recalling many happy times. Now to recall February 1998, still performing at the Stanier Hall (the Town Hallnot yet re-built) Geoff Smith produced two plays, “Pity about Kitty” and “In RoomFive Hundred and Four” both plays written by Jimmie Chinn. During the intervallight refreshments and wine was served by Jessel Jones, Hazel Tudor and helpers.Stage Crew Rosemary Fenn-Wiggin. Kieran Dawson. Bob Udy. Ann Jeffery. NancyWilson. Cliff Jeffery. Lyn Hinton. Jenny Colclough. (Interesting to note some of thenames appeared in the youth production last week!) Both these plays were thenentered in the Shropshire Drama League Festival at the Belfry Theatre, Wellington. The cast of “Pity about Kitty” was Lorraine Reader. Sue Udy. Carole Singleton.John Tudor. Justin Ply. Ivor Woodhead. An abbreviated Adjudicator’s report on theplay gave the Margaret Jones Cup for The Best Individual Performance in aSupporting Role to John Tudor. She, the adjudicator, then went on to say” Theconcentration of the team was admirable. They brought out the essential spirit andmeaning of the play” The cast of “In Room Five Hundred and Four” consisted ofJulie Blake. Mike Eyre. Sue Udy. Frank Barrow.

They too received accolades and won the Irene Ohm Challenge Cup for “TheMost Imaginative Stage Setting” (You will remember of course Miss Ohm was thefounder member of Wem A.D.O.S) and Julie Blake won “The Jane BensonTrophy for the Best Female Individual Performance” What a night that was toremember! You see there is nothing new in our Society winning awards, long mayit continue. Look out in the next edition of the Wemian for my memories of “TheWizard of Oz” who knows, you may even find your name mentioned.

Till then as ever, Margaret.

Wem community choir is now in its fourth year and has become wellestablished. Our aim is “Singing for pleasure” pure & simple. We meetduring school term time every Tuesday evening, 7:30 at the MethodistChurch Hall to enjoy the sound of each other’s voices & to have fun.The range of music sung is very broad: show numbers, popular songs, seashanties, 2, 3, and 4 part harmony (sometimes), spirituals, African, calypso, even madrigals on occasion! The list goes on, the main brief being weshould like singing them! You don’t need to read music & are always welcome to come along, have alisten & see if it’s for you? Or, just jump in & start singing. The choir aims to do around 4 concerts a year, so there is a focus to worktoward without becoming too taxing. We are also interested in strengthening links with the community, localgroups, societies & organisations. So, if you’d like a little vignette to helpyour event go with a swing – get in touch and talk it over.

It Changed My Life….By John Dromgool

The way I have tended to drift away from relating my mixed feelings as afive/six year old Second World War evacuee from Liverpool under thegovernment’s Operation Pied Piper is surely yet more testimony to the waythe Dromgool family of Mum, two sons and two daughters came to beaccepted by Wemians. While not forgetting our armed forces and theirfamilies, between 1939 and 1945 was a massively upsetting time forhundreds (millions, on a national scale) of bemused displaced children andno kindergarten either for sceptical host families and households. However, I feel I ought to tie up a few loose ends relating to the way wewere billeted. It isn’t enough to just say that between the five of us we musthave experienced 15 temporary homes. Each one was so different, buttogether they must have accounted for what I can best describe as makingthe Dromgools a dysfunctional family – a strong word, but one which I useafter noting the dictionary definition of “not operating normally or properly.”It couldn’t have been any other way. Also, it did nothing for one’sself-confidence, lack of which was, in my case, to be carried on through lifeIt has always been strange to reflect on how, after a short initial period ofbeing in the same billet as Mum, I became someone else’s responsibilityfor many months if not years – and I don’t think I could have been theperfect child! My Park Road council house stays were among the best ofmy evacuee’s life and how did I repay the care and kindness I was shown?Well, on one occasion I was sent off to school with a packed lunch only tobe distracted by a day off playing on swings in the Recreation Ground –while, of course, having a premature snack. Such freedom was short-lived.My absence from school, which by that time had moved from theall-evacuee British School off Chapel Street and integrated into the JuniorSchool in Noble Street, was soon noticed. But far from being reprimanded Iwas taken out for a meal by the headmaster, Mr John Ranford! The lunchvenue: the then Kynaston’s Café in the middle of High Street, now a hotfood takeaway although the Kynaston name is still clearly seen in the floortiles in the doorway. As for the kindly Mr Ranford – he went on to teachand mentor generations of youngsters before his own ordination into theChurch of England and curacy of the local Parish Church. Incidentally, does anyone remember some of the Junior School staff – like MrsRidgeway, Miss Martin, Miss Cheshire and, after returning from RAFservice, Mr Trevor Hayward? The latter introduced competitive footballinto the school. But I digress……My eventual move away from Park Road and its frontal outlook on to theRecreation Ground was only a matter of a few hundred yards to a Station

Page 22: Autumn 2014 - The Wemian...2014). Entry forms are available from the library and the town hall. Photographs with entry form and fee (in a sealed envelope labelled Wem Civic Society

22

Road house backing on to the Rec, where for the first time the four Dromgoolsiblings were brought together in the same billet – a major step towards Mum’swish for all of us to be re-united and to be a real family once more. It was alsohere where we experienced the burning sensation to scalp and eyes of havingJeyes fluid applied straight from the bottle at (tin) bath time - something I wroteabout earlier in my story. But it was something quite different that, for me, was the saddest period of myevacuee’s young live. Come hail or shine bedtime at this fresh Station Roadbillet was about 6.30pm, just when most children were enjoying play, fun andgames on the Rec. This unhappy lad could only watch, envy and pine from thebedroom window. To add to my misery, I could look across the Rec toShrubbery Gardens and directly on to the house where Mum was billeted. As ithappened she was housekeeping for members of the Eckford family of sweetpea growing fame combined, if I remember rightly, with similar work for MrMaynard, another Shrubbery Gardens resident and the local stationmaster.Yes, in those pre-Beeching days Wem had its own railway station, footbridge, ticket office and full staff.I wasn’t alone in my bouts of melancholy at this and other times. At one pointmy older brother, Joe, admitted to being “scared, feeling very much alone andmissing Mum and the family a great deal.”However, never mind we siblings, what effect must all this have been havingon Mum, a virtual, largely helpless spectator to what was happening to herchildren? It must have been awful – something which was brought home to meon once seeing a cutting and photo of her from a local newspaper article. Shewas thin and wraith-like and had the darkest of circles to sunken eyes. However, she was always determined and allied to her strong constitution thissaw her through most crises, including my father’s untimely death when I wasbarely 18-months-old and, of course, World War 2 with its Pied Piperevacuation and all its other repercussions for us as a family.Strangely, I have no memories of birthdays or Christmas celebrations at anybillets. Then there was religion. Suffice to say, I became something of a“mongrel” in this respect! Evacuees tended to practise whatever their hostfamilies decreed. Apparently, my late brother enjoyed Sunday School andother services at the Parish Church and was partial to the hymn singing. Thisaspect of our lives took an unusual turn when hosts at our first Station Roadbillet insisted on all four of us attending the local Apostolic Church (nowconverted into the Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society’s Stage Doortheatre). We all came to regard the experience as a little weird as eachSunday we sat together in the same pew and always had the same old mansitting next to us, although he tended to sleep in the time between the start ofthe sermon and the arrival of Communion wine!Little did we know it, but this period in our unsettled lives was coming to anend and in The Wemian’s winter edition I hope to draw my contribution to aclose with reflections on how Mum’s long-held ambition to get us all togethercame to fruition.

Wemian Readers will be sad to see that after 30 years The RNLI Stall onthe Wem Thursday Market has closed. This amazing group of volunteers who have dedicated their time to raisingfunds through selling brica-brac and Lifeboat cards and calendars atChristmas have raised in that time an incredible £100,000.We send our best wishes and thank you, we will miss your cheerful banterand good bargains.

The Eckford Sweetpea Show is taking place just as we put our magazinetogether for the autumn. this doesn't give the committee time to reflect andget news to us in time for print. So in a future wemian we will be hearing about the making of the show. The weather is perfect for this year and with local shops and businessesmaking the town look lovely and the vehicle rally fully booked a goodweekend is being had by all.Congratulations to the Eckford Society for another wonderful show.
