We are a people of Spirit. For us the material world is

not our final concern or goal. We do not spurn it; we enjoy

it. But we know it is not permanent; it is not lasting. To

try to hold on to possessions, prestige, wealth, and health

is ultimately foolish, as the scripture reminds us in the

first reading. Jesus provides an even stronger example in

the parable. The good capitalist of the parable, concerned

about shoring up and insuring his security, misses out on

the true richness of life. It is hard to be a Christian in a

materialistic culture. It is hard to resist the lure of adver-

tising that dangles each new product before us as the an-

swer to our dreams. Many people today are beginning to

see the shallow satisfactions of materialism. They are

searching for something more. They are in search of the

spiritual. And we have what they are looking for. As

Paul tells us, we have set our hearts on things above ra-

ther than on things of earth. How might we be witnesses

to our neighbors of this higher way? How do we aid them

in their struggle for fulfillment? We do not need to con-

demn our culture. It has provided for the first time in

history the possibility of a high standard of living for the

greatest number. But while it provides us with many

benefits and luxuries, it cannot in itself satisfy our deep-

est longings—for community, for relationships, for tran-

scendence of our small selves. Here Christians can bear

witness. Where do we place our values and trust? How

do we occupy our time? What is the place of material

goods in our lives? Many people are looking for the Spirit.

How might we live so that they recognize what they seek

in Jesus Christ?

Somos un pueblo de espíritu. Para nosotros, el mundo mate-

rial no es nuestro objetivo o meta final. No lo rechazamos;

nosotros lo disfrutamos Pero sabemos que no es permanente;

no es duradera Tratar de aferrarse a las posesiones, el pres-

tigio, la riqueza y la salud es, en última instancia, una

tontería, como nos recuerda en las escrituras en la primera

lectura. Jesús proporciona un ejemplo aún más fuerte en la

parábola. El buen capitalista de la parábola, preocupado por

apuntalar y asegurar su seguridad, se pierde la verdadera

riqueza de la vida. Es difícil ser cristiano en una cultura ma-

terialista. Es difícil resistir el atractivo de la publicidad que

pone en peligro cada nuevo producto que tenemos ante no-

sotros como la respuesta a nuestros sueños. Muchas per-

sonas hoy están comenzando a ver las satisfacciones superfi-

ciales del materialismo. Ellos están buscando algo más.

Están en busca de lo espiritual. Y tenemos lo que están

buscando. Como Pablo nos dice: hemos puesto nuestros co-

razones en las cosas más arriba que en las cosas de la tierra.

¿Cómo podríamos ser testigos a nuestros vecinos de esta

manera superior? ¿Cómo los ayudamos en su lucha por la

realización? No necesitamos condenar nuestra cultura. Ha

proporcionado por primera vez en la historia la posibilidad

de un alto nivel de vida para el mayor número posible.

Pero si bien nos proporciona muchos beneficios y lujos, no

puede satisfacer nuestros anhelos más profundos: la comuni-

dad, las relaciones, la trascendencia de nuestro pequeño ser.

Aquí los cristianos pueden dar testimonio. ¿Dónde colo-

camos nuestros valores y confianza? ¿Cómo ocupamos nues-

tro tiempo? ¿Cuál es el lugar de los bienes materiales en

nuestras vidas? Muchas personas están buscando el Es-

píritu. ¿Cómo podríamos vivir para que reconozcan lo que

buscan en Jesucristo?

The theme for the 15th Eucharistic Congress of the Diocese of Charlotte has been an-nounced by Bishop Peter Jugis: “Stay With Us, Lord.”

The 2019 theme is taken from the Gospel book of Luke (24:29), telling of two dejected disciples leaving Jerusalem after Christ was crucified and died.

Last year we did well in the number of peo-ple who represented us. This year we hope more people will be there to join the Bishop and the Church in the Diocese of Charlotte to celebrate and pray adoring Jesus Christ physically present in the Eucharist.
