A Message from Session

Dear Friends,

As you likely know by now, the session has voted to hire the Rev. Anne Myers as our

temporary pastor, beginning August 3. The plan is for Rev. Myers to lead us in worship

and to provide pastoral care for the duration of our search process. We couldn’t be

happier about the choice.

Rev. Myers has nearly 30 years of experience leading Presbyterian congregations, large

and small, including service from 1992 through 2008 as associate pastor at Pine Street

Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. More recently, she has served as director of the

chaplaincy program at the state prison at Camp Hill, and as a temporary interim pastor

at Silver Spring Presbyterian. She is currently employed as spiritual director of Homeland

Hospice.

When not serving a congregation directly, she has also been in regular demand as a

substitute pastor at churches throughout our Presbytery.

Because of her ongoing hospice responsibilities, Rev. Myers will be serving in a part-time

capacity with us, splitting time between preparing for and leading worship, advising

church boards and committees, and providing pastoral care as needed. As such, she

does not expect to keep regular weekday office hours in Carlisle. She will, however, be

readily accessible for any important concerns.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina and Princeton Theological Seminary, Rev.

Myers lives in Camp Hill with her husband, the Rev. Charles D. “Buz” Myers, a professor

of religion at Gettysburg College. They have two adult children: one currently teaching

French at Camp Hill High School; the other in medical school.

The Myers are not strangers to our church. Buz has led several Sunday school courses at

First and served as a guest pastor multiple times, and Anne has led worship.

We believe that with Rev. Myers’ guidance and the good work of our staff, we will be in

excellent hands when it comes to our spiritual leadership for the weeks and months

ahead.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Anne and her family this

Sunday, August 3, as she helps us move toward the next chapter in the long life of

Carlisle’s First Presbyterian Church.

FALL KICK-OFF — SEPTEMBER 7 Here’s what’s being planned!

At 9:30 AM, we will have an “Inter-generational Sunday School” hour that will be based on songs we’ve all learned at camp and Sunday School — for example, “The B-I-B-L-E”. These songs will be the source of related Bible illustrations — led by Art Thompson and Debby Madden. (You won’t want to miss this!) At 10:45 AM, Rev. Myers will begin a 10-part sermon series on “The Ten Commandments”. The Sunday school class curriculums for adults and children will be tailored to this series.

In the Life of the Church YOUTH SUMMER BIBLE STUDY will resume on Monday, August 4, at the church, 6:30—8 PM. Since July sessions were missed, we will hold it on EVERY Monday in August: 4, 11, 18 & 25, to “catch up.” YOUTH — HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Chris & Candy Gulotta recently moved to Easton, PA in anticipation of the birth of twin grandsons. Well, they’re here! On July 24, their daughter Jackie (and husband John) wel-

comed Christopher and Kyle into their fam-ily. Both babies (and Mom and Dad) are do-ing fine! We look forward to a visit from them in the coming months. Congrats!

THE PRAYER COMMUNITY will meet after worship on Sunday,

August 17.

DOES OUR “BOOKS FOR BABIES” MISSION MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

(a recent note)

“Dear First Presbyterian Church: Thank you for your gift of children’s literature

upon the birth of our daughter, Michaela, at the Carlisle Women’s Center.

“Planting a Rainbow”, by Lois Ehler, is our little girl’s first book and we thank your

church family for this wonderfully Christian gesture. The delivery doctor and

nursing staff wrote messages on the inside cover and also added Michaela’s

footprints! Such a touching gift. Sincere thanks, Wendy & Michael Martin.”

IT’S TODDLER TIME!

Debby Madden has prepared six Toddler

Time sessions to be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5:45-7:15 PM, August

5-21. If you have a “toddler” (age 2+, potty-

trained, through Kindergarten), we hope you will come join in the fun and frolic.

In addition to big fun, our toddlers will

learn the stories of Jesus as told through Parables. We will use music, crafts, stories,

and playtime. You don’t have to come to all

six sessions, but we hope you can/will!

AUGUST 24

August 24, we will hold our

annual “All-Church Picnic” at North

Middleton’s Creekview Park, located off of

now, circle the date and plan to come enjoy

Food, Fun & Fellowship!!

Your Church Leadership

OUR MINISTRY OF FELLOWSHIP Starting in September, we will celebrate birth-days each month with a cake during Fellow-ship Time. Here’s how you can help! If it’s your birthday that month, please bring a “gift” to the monthly party. Your “gift” should be one of fellowship time supplies for the kitchen. Ideas include: juice/lemonade bottles ginger ale Crackers Chips Cookies Pretzels goldfish crackers juice boxes

Remember that we are a peanut-free church!

Thank you for your support of this ministry.

WE HAVE A RECYCLING FAIRY!

Did you know that First Church has a recycling fairy?

Yes...every week this Friend of the Earth carefully

sorts and cleans recyclables, hauls them home, and

places them at curbside for pickup. You can help her

by placing your trash and recyclables in the correct,

labeled containers in Fellowship Hall.

RECYCLE THESE ITEMS:

Plastic; Styrofoam; aluminum; tin;, glass (can all

be put in one container)

office paper (bulletins; scrap paper; envelopes;

coloring sheets; construction paper; note paper);

flattened “greyboard” (cereal boxes, etc.); and

cardboard (put in container separate from plastic,

etc.)

DO NOT PLACE THESE ITEMS IN RECYCLE

CONTAINER:

garbage; paper plates; paper towels; tissues; lefto-

ver food, etc. (It’s NO fun to dig thru garbage to

find recyclable material!)

THANK YOU!

Meet Our PNC

P a g e 6 A u g u s t 2 0 1 4

The Congregation voted to accept the following members as our Pastoral Nominating Committee. They are charged with finding our next called Pastor. Following is brief bio info on each of the nine members:

TRUDY BAILEY

I’ve been attending First Presbyterian since moving to Carlisle in 1991. I am an ordained elder and have served on Session twice,

with the Christian Education Committee and the Finance Committee. I sing in the choir. I have no special qualifications or insight

into the selection of a pastor, but I care about this church and those who gather in it. I will do my best to choose a pastor who will

meet the needs of our congregation.

NANCY JACOBY

I grew up in this congregation and have served as a deacon and an elder, and chaired several committees. I had the distinct privilege

to serve as Commissioner to the General Assembly in 1990 and served as Clerk on the most recent Pastoral Nominating Committee.

I currently am employed as diagnostic imaging technician for Pinnacle Health Hospitals.

HAROLD KRETZING Jean and I have been members at First Church for 50 years. I have been an ordained elder for over 40 years, and have served on

several Presbytery committees, in addition to having served as Moderator. Currently I am completing 14 years as church treasurer.

We have six children and 22 grandchildren.

JOHN MARTIN

I live with my wife, Elizabeth, and our two children, Jack and Sarah, in Mt. Holly Springs. I am a partner at the law firm of Rhoads

& Sinon LLP in Harrisburg, where I am a member of the firm’s employment law group, representing local and national employers

of all sizes. I also train human resource professionals on employment-related topics.

PEG OWEN Jack and I moved to Carlisle from Chambersburg with our two sons. We were members of the First Presbyterian Church in

Chambersburg and we decided to attend a service here in Carlisle. We have been members for 45 years and have enjoyed serving in

different areas of the church. It has been a pleasure serving as a Deacon and as an Elder and also being a member of the choir. I have

been a Fitness Instructor at the Carlisle Family YMCA for 45 years and a Water Safety Instructor for the American Red Cross for 60

years. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this new journey.

JENNIFER PATTERSON

I am married to JJ Patterson and am the mother of Grace, Jack, and Jane. I was granted a BS in psychology from Ursinus College,

and a MS and PhD in clinical psychology from Virginia Tech. I grew up in the United Church of Christ, singing in the choir since

age 12 (in Perry County), and then my husband and I joined the Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach. I was ordained as ruling

elder in First Presbyterian, Virginia Beach. I have been a member of this church since 2009. My hobbies are gardening, bird-

watching and painting floor cloths.

DENNIS RYDBERG

I recently retired from the Commonwealth. I’m kept busy with six grandchildren living in the area. I still volunteer at the

Governor’s Residence Gardens, and have begun volunteering this year at the Harris-Cameron Mansion Gardens in Harrisburg. I

have been on Session here and at our former church in Kentucky since 1972, most recently on the Property Committee here a few

years ago. I have had the honor of serving on three PNCs over the years – chairing two of them, including our church’s last one in

1995. Please keep the committee and its members you elect in your prayers.

TOM SHEPERD

I am an active duty Army officer assigned to the War College where I teach multiple courses on strategy, policy and Africa. I also

head the college’s regional studies program. I am a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the University of Florida and

the Army War College. My wife, Melissa, and I, along with our children, Katie, David, and Sarah have been attending First

Presbyterian since arriving in Carlisle from Africa in the summer of 2008. I have been a member of this church since 2010.

HEATHER THOMPSON

I am a third generation member at First Church. Growing up in the church, I attended Sunday School, sang in the youth choir and

attended youth group activities. My late husband, Scott, and I were married here in 1997. We lived in Marrietta, PA, for several

years and were members of Donegal Presbyterian until moving back. I have served on the Flower and Nominating Committees.

I live in Dillsburg with my two children, Rebert (12) and Camryn (10). I work as a Sr. Biopharmaceutical Rep for Amgen, and

currently serve as Chair, PA Arthritis Foundation Leadership Council. The members of this church are family who I love very

dearly. Being asked to serve on this committee is an honor and a responsibility that I take very seriously.

Please keep the PNC in your prayers in the coming months!
