From the Desk of Fr. MatthewMy brothers and sisters in Christ,

Every year during the month of August, the Orthodox Church celebrates two of the twelve major feasts on our liturgical calendar: The Transfiguration of our Lord on August 6, and the Dormition of the Theotokos on August 15. These two feasts illustrate that we are a Church of both Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition.

The Orthodox Church confirms that Holy Scripture, both the Old Testament and the New Testament, is divinely inspired and is a gift from Almighty God to all mankind. We proclaim Jesus Christ as found in the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and we use the bible for both our morality and our spirituality. The feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord is one of the twelve major feasts of the Orthodox Church and can be found in the New Testament (Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9). Jesus Christ ascends Mt. Tabor with three of His Apostles: Peter, James, and John. While on Mt. Tabor, Christ is Transfigured, and He manifests His divinity when His face “shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.” We commemorate this biblical event every year on August 6 with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy.

The Orthodox Church also receives authority from Holy Tradition, those events and teachings that are not documented in the bible but were passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition. The feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is an example of Holy Tradition because the Falling Asleep of the Virgin Mary is not documented in the bible. However, we know that she was mortal and did Fall Asleep in the Lord at some point, and the Church has maintained the tradition of this event for two thousand years. The Virgin Mary received a message from the Archangel Gabriel that she was about to Fall Asleep, and she requested that she see the apostles before her death. The apostles were gathered together to witness this event, but St. Thomas was absent. When he finally arrived, we went to her tomb, but her body had been taken up into heaven. The Orthodox Church commemorates this event with fourteen days of strict fasting beginning August 1 and with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on August 15. As Orthodox Christians, we confess the authority of both Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition, and we should always strive to learn about both of these areas of our Church so we can always give glory to God.

With love in Christ,+Fr. Matthew

From Emanuel Miliotis,Parish Council President

August signals that summer is winding down but also signals the ramp up of our church activities and the start of a new ecclesiastical year. At St. Nicholas we are excited about all many different ways to serve Christ through our ministry teams. As we begin to gear up for the fall, we welcome volunteers who would like to serve the church through the talents with which God has graced each of us. If your desire is to teach, or to learn more about the your faith, help children, participate in welcoming new members, use your handy man talents to maintain our building, use your technological skills to help spread “the good news” or visit the sick or homebound, we can use your help. Please think about reaching out to anyone on the Parish Council or any of the Education, Youth Diakonia Ministry team leaders. We would be honored by your service. Just say YES to that feeling that may nudge you. Please keep your eye on upcoming newsletters, Sunday bulletins or our website to look for opportunities. See you all soon.

In Christ’s service Manny

Outreach & EvangelismJim Stasios

We welcome three new families to our St. Nicholas Parish:

Matthew & Debra Borho moved to Wilmington from New Mexico. “Matt” is a nurse anesthetist and works with endoscopy centers here in Wilmington.

George & Argrio “Rula” Papanikolaou moved to Wilmington from the Raleigh/Durham area. They own and operate The Greeks Mediterranean Deli & Market near the corner of Second & Princess Streets in downtown Wilmington. Their son, Yanni, and daughter, Nina, also work in the restaurant with them.

John & Elizabeth Petrolias moved to Wilmington from the Pittsburgh, Ohio area. They are retired and are the parents of Stacy Constantinou and the grandparents of Elizabeth, Alexandros & Peter Constantinou.

Please greet these new parishioners when you see them at church and make them feel welcomed and at home, here, in our St. Nicholas Parish Family.

The month of August marks the last month of this Ecclesiastical year. The Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be celebrated on Monday, August 6th. This was the day, 40 days prior to His Crucifixion, that Jesus took three of His disciples to Mt. Tabor and was “transfigured” before them. The Greek word for transfiguration is “metamorphosis” and, in my opinion, better describes what took place on Mt. Tabor that day. The Orthodox Church observes this feast 40 days prior to the Feast of the Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross (September 14th) .

The final major fasting period of the church year takes place during the first 15 days of August. We will observe the Feast of the Dormition (Falling Asleep) of the Theotokos on Wednesday, August 15th. The Mother of God has a special place in our Orthodox Church and in preparation for the feast, our Church encourages us to pray, fast and attend special church

Outreach & Evangelism, continued

services during this 15 day period. Please consult the Parish’s August calendar included in this newsletter for the dates and times of these special services. We will have our annual “Panigri for the Theotokos” in our parish’s Hellenic Center at 6 PM that evening. Please plan to attend and support our Ladies Philoptochos Society with their annual fundraiser.

August also signals the end of the summer season and the start of a new school year. Our youth will begin classes in mid-August...most in public school and some will begin their college studies. Please pray for them, their parents and their teachers.

Please Save-the-Date Saturday, December 1st. This will be the date our Second Annual STOP HUNGER NOW meal packaging event and it’s not too soon to mark your calendars.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and...”we’ll see you in church”.

“Everything we do is an opportunity for outreach & evangelism”

Catechism CornerCourtney Malahias

As summer is coming to a close, I am bound and determined to keep the spirit of summer with me as this new ecclesiastical year begins. Summer is all about light, longer days, frolicking in the sea and spending time with our family. My mind is freer in the summer months and while most people make New Years resolutions, I have always, since I was a child, felt like September was the beginning of my year. A fresh start......I would always write down my goals and make my "new" schedule for how I would achieve them. Truly our only goal should be to strengthen our relationship with God to fulfill His purpose for us. "But the way to know God, Father Maximos would say repeatedly, is neither through philosophy nor through experimental science but through systematic methods of spiritual practice that could open us up to the Grace of the Holy Spirit." (Mountain of Silence)This is what I hope and pray for our children - a life of spiritual practice to find out His purpose for them.

We have many exciting months ahead of us and much learning and growing to do! Our open house for Catechism will be held on August 26th right after Communion and the first day of classes will be September 9th. Please make sure you fill out a registration form and hand it in to your teacher or myself. It is up to us, the parents, to immerse our children in our beautiful faith and smell the incense, listen to the beautiful prayers being chanted and hear and understand the divine liturgy and how it applies to our life.

Thank you for your dedication to the Catechism Program and if you have any questions, please feel free to email me or call me. [email protected] or 431-5835 (cell)

Blessings to you and your family from all of us in the Catechism Program.

Hellenic SchoolAlexandros Theodoropoulos

We hope that all of you are having a great summer as we are now moving in its last month!

On June 10th, 2012, we had a wonderful Graduation ceremony recognizing all of our youth attending our Sunday and Hellenic School ministries as well as our High School graduates for the 2011-12 academic year! The event had one of the highest attendances ever and based on our parishioners’ feedback the academic year couldn’t have ended in a better and more festive way!

The event started with a special theatrical play presentation of «ΣΤΑΧΤΟΠΟΥΤΑ» (“CINDERELLA”)that was performed in Greek by our Junior HellenicSchool classes! All of us in attendance enjoyed watching our younger students performing this play and demonstrating their Greek language skills and even their … acting talent!

We would like to thank our students, Maria Foulton, Maria Katris, Georgia Theodoropoulos, Kassiani Harris, Helen Dandoulakis, Stamatia Foulton, Annivas “Eli” Theodoropoulos, Emilio Hernandez, Evangelos Psilos, Matthew Gill, Harrison Gill and Leonidas “Leo” Jack for their dedication, their hard work and for doing such a great job performing! In addition, we would like to especially thank our Hellenic School teacher Anastasia Katris for coming up with the idea and the script of the play, for researching and selecting the castle and the rest of the stage items as well as instructing, preparing and directing our students for the performance! Also, many thanks to our Hellenic School teachers Yanna Hernandez and Evyenia Karonis for assisting Anastasia in instructing and directing and to Eleni Pappamihiel for offering her support with the special “boom” microphone that was used during the play !!! Moreover, we would like to thank our Hellenic School (HS) co-director Nick Lazaridis for his general support and all of our HS teachers and students for their hard work and dedication throughout the year! We would further like to congratulate our Hellenic School (and High School)

Finally, we would like to thank Dianne McGowan and Manny Miliotis for doing a great job presenting the biographies of our High School graduates, Kim Saffo for recognizing and presenting gifts to the instructorsand dancers of our recently formed “Zoyra” junior dance group and, of course, Courtney Malahias, our Sunday School (SS) director, as well as the rest of theSunday School teachers for doing such a wonderful jobpresenting the certificates to our SS students and significantly contributing to the success of our whole Graduation ceremony!

On a final note, our Hellenic School will be starting the 2012-13 ecclesiastical and academic year on Friday, September 14th with our ΑΓΙΑΣΜΟ (Aya-SMOH) or Blessing of the New Academic Year service as usual. Please consider registering your family members for this important ministry of our church the primary mission of which is to support and reinforce the teachings of our Orthodox Christian Faith through the studying of Hellenism and the Hellenic culture, language and values. In addition, we will be using more technology, both hardware and software, in our classrooms. Registration forms will be available in the Hellenic Center or can be downloaded from our website at http://stnicholaswilmington.org/HellenicStudiesCulture.html . Also, additional information about other potential meetings would be provided through our church's other publications so please stay tuned. Finally, in case you would like to join our Hellenic School, are interested in teaching or have any other questions please contact Alexandros Theodoropoulos at [email protected].

Hymn of Entry (Εισοδικον)

This fall we will begin a new adult study program based on a book by Archimandrite Vasileios, called the Hymn of Entry. Here is an excerpt from the Introduction to the book.

“The painful problem is this: how can contemporary man fulfill his liturgical nature? How can we bridge the gap which separates the agony and thirst of modern man from the abundance of new life and the creative power to be found in the Fathers? Or, to put it another way, how can we do away with the gap which separates theology from life? When this is achieved, then new streams will water our thirsty land, and the sap of our deep-rooted Orthodox tradition will regenerate the shoots of our courage and our life. We shall appreciate that there is no basis for comparison with anything preceding or subsequent. Orthodoxy conceals within it all that has gone before, from before all ages, and all that will come subsequently, without end.”

Do you want more from your church life? Studying his book with a group of other Orthodox Christians will almost assuredly help you obtain that. It will change the way you think about theology, liturgy, music, icons and your personal spiritual life.

Here is an excerpt from the Foreword to the book, written by Archmandrite Kallistos Ware:

“The quality that characterizes this remarkable book is above all a sense of organic wholeness, such as may be found in St. Maximos the Confessor. The unity of the divine and the human in the incarnate Christ, the unity of heaven and earth in the Divine Liturgy, the unity between theology and spirituality, between theology and life- such are the author's master themes. For Fr. Vasileios theology is by its very essence liturgical: not a

Adult Education, continued

“philosophy” or a “system”- anymore than the Bible is philosophical or systematic- but the expression of the Church's mystical life. So, in answer to the question, 'What is theology?', he is led to consider such themes as the meaning of the icon as liturgical art- the doctrinal significance of, for example, the use of color and perspective in iconography- and even the theological value of the eight tones in church music. Al these things are part of theology. True theology, he affirms, is always living, a form of “hierurgy” or holy action, something that changes our life and “assumes” us into itself; we are to become theology. Understood in this way, theology is not a matter for the specialists but a universal vocation; each is called to become a “theological soul.”

Does all this sound a little deep. Well, perhaps it is, but we will read it together in class and very slowly, taking time to reflect and consider all that he is saying. The topics under consideration are ones that we, as Orthodox Christians, are already familiar with. Reading this book will just give us a deeper understanding of the familiar and, in many cases, simply articulating what we already know in our hearts, so that we may ponder it secretly and perhaps share it with others through the way we live our lives. Please look for schedule information in the weekly bulletins later this summer and if you are interested, please contact Daphne in the church office so that we can get a count of the books we need to order.
