Have you ever attended an ALOA Convention and Trade Show or any other organizations show only to discover that all of the classes you wanted to take were being held on the same day, AT THE SAME TIME! When this occurs it can be very frustrating and can cost you money because the classes you may have missed would have taught you a skill that would increase your income. There now is a solution for you. ALOA is pleased to announce that beginning with the Fall of 2011, the ALOA Training Center located at the Headquarters in Dallas Texas is now offering classes year round in many different disciplines of the Security Professional field. These classes will be scheduled in Learning Tracks meaning basically that each set of classes given during a 2, 3, 4 or 5 day setting will be geared toward one aspect of the profession such as Automotive, Door Servicing, Safe Work, etc. This will allow you, the student, to focus on one area of the industry at a time and allow you to take each module offered as needed or take the entire session for a more comprehensive lesson on a particular field. The classes will be conducted by ALOA ACE Certified Instructors, recognized as some of the finest and most knowledgeable instructors in the industry. These classes also allow students to earn ALOA Education Units (AEU) which are used toward membership renewal as well as Continuing Education Units (CEU) in many of the States that require them for licensing. These classes will afford a student the opportunity to take classes in Dallas during the year as their schedule allows and give them the opportunity to take a different set of classes at the annual ALOA Convention and Trade Show, in Las Vegas in 2012, or at any other organizational setting. ALOA TRAINING CENTER FALL 2011 SCHEDULE

MASTER LOCK CERTIFICATION – OCTOBER 11 – 12, 2011Attendees residing in a State that requires licensing, must be

able to provide valid license upon registration.

Master Lock® Factory Certified Training 1

A eight hour hands on training class that will familiarize the student with the construction, variations, part numbers and servicing techniques for the ProSeries® product line. Students will rekey a cylinder, disassemble and reassemble various locks for practice, and become familiar with the new BumpStop™ technology.

The class will also familiarize the student with the new EDGE™ Key Control System products. In class the student will rekey a cylinder and learn about the various levels of key control available. The class will also familiarize the student with the Python adjustable locking cable lock. The student will get to key a Python plug in class using a Master Lock keying tool. Students will receive a copy of the latest Master Lock Technical Manual and American Lock Service Manual in class.

The class is followed by an open book test. Once graded, students who receive a passing grade will be mailed a certificate suitable for framing.

Course Description The ALOA Continuing Education (ACE) 6-day Basic Locksmithing Course will provide you with basic

hands-on knowledge of locks and security related hardware. Students will work with basic locksmithing tools such as dial calipers, impressioning pliers soft face mallet, lock pick set, along with other locksmith specialty tools. Upon completion of this course, you will have the knowledge required to function as an apprentice locksmith who can perform the following tasks:

• identify and duplicate keys, • service and adjust key machines, • rekey a variety of lock cylinders, • make original keys for a variety of locks; by

code, dis-assembly and impressioning, • bypass and/or pick common locks, • troubleshoot and service common cylinder and

lockset malfunctions,

• identify common lock hardware finishes and functions,

• be familiar with Life Safety Codes and the ADA, • design and key a simple master key system,• know combination lock operation and changing

methods,

B011 Hollow Metal Door & Frame ServicingInstructor: David Thielen, CML 8 hoursThis class will introduce the student to Hollow Metal Doors and Frames, including nomenclature, design, installation,

repair, and servicing techniques of various types of doors and frames. There will be a demonstration of tools as well as lecture, discussion and videos of troubleshooting and repair techniques.

The hands on portion will give the student some valuable experience in installing locks, repairing hinges, retrofitting hardware, preventing door collapse, cutting doors, and other profitable skills.Materials to bring to class: Students should bring an assortment of screwdrivers and Allen wrenches.The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP sectionL-28

B009 Complete Door and Door Closers w/L -05 PRPInstructor: David Thielen, CML 8 hours“Open the doors” to a new area for your locksmith business. If you have ever wanted to be able to service more than just

the locks on a door, then be sure not to miss this class.You will become familiar with the principles of door closers with emphasis on the selection, adjustment, and installation

procedures for non-handed (reversible) surface-mounted door closers. In addition, you will learn about the functions, installation and servicing of door closers, hinges, and related door hardware. The hardware covered will be of commercial or heavy-duty grade. Other types of closers will also be discussed as an aid in preparing for the PRP section on door closers.Optional Lab Fee: Students who take this class will have the option of purchasing “Total Door Service and Repair, Volume 1 by Jake Jakubuwski for a discounted price of $100.00The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-00, L-05 and L-41. B010 Exit Devices & Exit Alarms (P-16)Instructor: David Thielen, CML 8 hoursThis class has been updated to include delayed exit devices that comply with NFPA101. A wealth of information will be

covered on exit devices including: types, functions, ratings, options, installations, repairs and servicing. Hands-on practice as well as slides, videos and handouts will be provided. Students will be able to properly remove, service, troubleshoot malfunctions and retrofit many of the popular exit devices.Materials to bring to class: Common and Phillips screwdrivers and an Allen wrench set.The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L-16. ALOA members who pay the additional $20.00 labfee for the test may take PRP Section L-16 at the end of the class.

B008 Servicing Aluminum Storefront DoorsInstructor: David Thielen, CML 8 hoursLearn about aluminum storefront doors and frames, and their unique hardware. Door/frame construction, locks, closers,

pivots, and other hardware will be presented with an emphasis on installation, servicing, adjustments, and retrofitting techniques.Improving security on these doors will also be discussed. Some hands-on will be involved. Although handouts are

included in the class, students will have the option of purchasing the Aluminum Stile Door Service & Repair Manual by Jake Jakubuwski for a special reduced price of $100.00.Materials to bring to class: Allen wrenches and a set of screwdrivers.Prerequisite: Basic LocksmithingThe information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-28.

SL017 Multipoint Hardware & Profile Cylinder Servicing Instructor: David Thielen, CML 8 hours

This course will explore the various multi-point lock systems in use today with popular door manufacturers such as Pella, Andersen, Marvin and others. Learn how to service brands such as Hoppe, GU, Amesbury, Imperial and others. Resources for obtaining tools, parts and cylinders will be provided. There will also be detailed instruction on rekeying and servicing the various types of profile cylinders.

AUTO WEEK – November 7 – November 10, 2011 Attendees residing in a State that requires licensing, must be

A005 Basic Automotive Lock ServiceInstructor: Ray D’Adamo, CML, CAL 8 hours

Students already familiar with basic lock service will be introduced to the tools, skills and information, critical for beginning professional automotive lock service. All fundamental topics will be covered. Learning the basic terminology and procedures of automotive cylinder and key service is the theme throughout the day. Hands on clinics will include key blank identification, referencing and cutting keys by code, function and operation of common automotive cylinder types, basic lock manipulation, disassembly and re-assembly, keying and re-keying, general cylinder repair service and fitting first keys. Materials needed: selection of hand tools, such as screwdrivers, an awl, files, lock picks, possibly a small clamp-on vise, a small hammer and any additional tool you feel will be helpful for bench work. Prerequisites: Basic Lock Service or equivalent experience The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-03.

A006 Intermediate Automotive Lock Service (P-03)Instructor: Ray D’Adamo, CML, CAL 8 hoursThis course is for students already familiar with basic automotive lock service, who wish to learn about

servicing the more advanced, two dimensional mechanical and electromechanical security systems found in today’s vehicles. Some examples of the topics covered are system identification & electromechanical integration, intermediate lock, linkage & electromechanical manipulation, air bag & basic transponder key service, special tools, troubleshooting, effecting repairs and fitting fully functional first keys. Prerequisites: Basic Automotive Lock Service or equivalent experience. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L-03 & L-04. ALOA members who pay the additional $15.00 lab fee for the test may take PRP Section L-03 at the end of the class.

A007 Advanced Automotive Lock ServiceInstructor: Ray D’Adamo, CML, CAL 8 hoursThis course is designed for students already proficient in intermediate automotive lock service and are ready

to reach beyond two dimensions and enter the world of three dimensional automotive lock service. During this course, the fuzzy realm of Lexus, Saab, Mercedes Benz, and all the Others come into focus. Hands on clinic highlights include duplicating a key, cutting code keys, decoding a cylinder and fitting a fully functional first key. Students will disassemble, re-assemble, key and re-key different system cylinders and effect repairs to damaged units where feasible. Many other topics, such as alarm systems, valet systems, air bag and transponder systems will also be covered as well as a product review, during which, students will identify the unique characteristics of each manufacturer and practice where feasible, the fastest methods of key making and service.

Students wishing to more fully participate will bring a laptop with an installed vehicle key code database, a selection of bench tools & lock picks, a clamp-on vise & high security locks that may have been a challenge to them in the past. Prerequisite: Basic & Intermediate Automotive Lock Service or equivalent experience. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-04.

A012 High Security Automotive & TranspondersInstructor: Ray D’Adamo, CML, CAL 8 hoursThe class will examine the various High Security Auto Locking Systems. An overview of the design, function

and applications will be presented along with key origination techniques.The class will also include an in-depth look at Transponder Systems in the automotive industry. How they

impact the locksmith business and techniques for working with transponder systems including up to the minute applications and programming.

Upon completion of this class the student will have an understanding of the various types of high security auto locking systems along with the methods of fitting first keys, rekeying and ignition lock cylinder removal.The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-03 & L-04.

SV006 Safe Lock Servicing and TroubleshootingInstructor: Joe Cortie, CML, CPS 8 hoursThis course will feature the basics of combination locks as well as a discussion on the different makes and

models. Students will also learn how to disassemble and reassemble combination locks. They will also learn to change combinations and determine what numbers should or should not be used. There will also be hands-on dialing diagnostics and troubleshooting. When the student leaves this class they should feel confident about changing combinations, proper servicing of the lock and be able to do some dialing diagnostics that will enable them to open many malfunctioning safe locks without drilling.

Materials students should bring to class: Medium size common and #2 Philips screwdrivers, diagonal pliers and pencil and paper for any notes they want to make.

The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L- 24 & L-33 and STPRP Section S-00. This class has been approved for 1 point towards the ALOA PRP Recertification requirements

SV008 Combination Lock Manipulation Instructor: Joe Cortie, CML, CPS 16 hours

This is not an introductory course. Students should have a thorough knowledge of servicing safe locks and combination changing prior to taking this class. You must show proof of completion of a combination lock servicing class or pass a pretest (available from the ALOA headquarters) to be able to attend this course. This course will include a brief review of mechanical combination locks including the theory of operation, determining the number of wheels, and how to determine the manufacturer. Methods to determine if a lock should be manipulated will be presented. Students will be presented with the theory of manipulation and extensive hands-on practice manipulating Group 2 locks. When the student leaves this course they should not only be able to manipulate locks, but also through the knowledge gained about locks, be able to open many locks that they have not been able to, including some Group I locks. Materials students should bring to class: Medium size common and #2 Philips screwdrivers, diagonal pliers and pencil and paper for any notes they want to make.Prerequisite: Combination Lock Servicing or equivalent. Students must be bonded.The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L-33 and STPRP Section S-00.

SV011 Basic Safe PenetrationInstructor: Mike Oehlert, CMST, CPL 16 hoursThis class will enable the student to add safe opening to their portfolio of services. The first day is spent with

lecture in the morning on topics such as preparation, planning, tools, techniques and resources. In the afternoon and on day 2 the students will form work groups and experience safe penetration as a hands-on opportunity. The student will plan their opening and then execute their plan. This basic class allows the student to make notes; photograph and drill fire safes; “B” and “C” rated safes and containers up to TL30 classification depending on availability. Each safe will be opened more than once allowing for each work group to rotate safes after each opening. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L-24, L-33 and STPRP Section S-00.

E002 Basic Electricity & Electronics (P-13)Instructor: Chuck Dixon, CML 8 hoursThis course begins with fundamental electric theory and focuses on those aspects of electricity that apply to

modern access control and electric locking systems. The class will explore the basics of electronics pertaining to the electronic access control industry. We will explore how electricity is created and utilized. We will also look at the various relationships regarding electricity and how that pertains to the selection of hardware and troubleshooting procedures. To fully participate in this class Students are encouraged to bring their own digital volt ohm meter. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-13. ALOA members who pay the additional $15.00 lab fee for the test may take PRP Section L-13 at the end of the class.

E007 Installing and Servicing Electronic Access Control Systems (P-40)Instructor: Charles Dixon, CML 8 hours

This class is designed to give an overview of electronic access control. The class will emphasize tools, equipment, and circuits. We will assemble basic circuits and look at troubleshooting. By the end of this class students should have a working knowledge of beginning electronic access control installation and troubleshooting. Students are encouraged to bring their own digital volt ohm meter, multi-tip screw driver, pocket screwdriver, needle nose pliers, and wire strippers. Prerequisite: Basic electricity class or an understanding of Ohm’s law, Watt’s law, and basic electrical circuits. The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-40. ALOA memberswho pay the additional $15.00 lab fee for the test may take PRP Section L-40 at the end of the class.

E011 Closed Circuit TV Design & Installation CourseInstructor: Chuck Dixon, CML 16 hoursThis class covers a range of CCTV equipment and installation techniques including types of cameras, types

of lenses, calculating light requirements, uses for each, mounts and housings, wire and cable, connectors, monitors, Digital Video Recorders(DVR) and system design.

The second day of the class includes a hands-on installation of a multi-camera and monitoring CCTV system including DVR, remote monitoring and integrating into a networked access control system.

Upon completion of the class students will have a basic understanding of how a CCTV system functions, what products to select, how to strip wires, attach connectors, install cameras on mounts, hook cameras to a monitor and a DVR. This class awards Two points toward ALOA PRP re-certification and an ACE Class Certificate attesting 16 credit hours of CE instruction.
