The most important NTFPs, and the most fast-growing plant species,

which can be harvested sustainably with 3~5 yr. rotation once planted

Provide multiple ecosystem services including provisioning (food,

housing, and daily necessities), regulating (soil and water conservation,

C sequestration), and cultural function and value

The booming global market for Bamboo based products

offers a range of opportunities for rural development, poverty

alleviation and alternative biomass resource for replacing

timber supply from natural forests

Characteristics of Bamboo forests

There are more than 1,250 species in 75 genera globally, with a wide

distribution in tropical and subtropical zones A total area of 31.47 million ha, accounting for 0.78% of total forest

area (4.03 billion ha , FAO 2010) In China, 540 species in 39 genera, 6 million ha (2.8% of the total

forest area and 20% of global bamboo forests)

Potential roles in mitigating climate change

Bamboo is fast carbon sequestration species (5.1C t/yr. by moso

bamboo), and carbon stock in China’s bamboo forest is estimated

727 million ton in 2010 and 1.02 billion ton by 2050 Carbon sink of bamboo is continuously increasing because

bamboo area is expending annually by 3%

In 2014, the output value of China’s bamboo industry reached 30 billion USD; Over 7.75 million people involved in bamboo industry, of which 7.14 million

in the first industry, 0.53 million in the second one.

Bamboo forest area in China from 1973-2013

The area of pure bamboo forest in China increased from 3.04 million to 6.01 million ha from 1976-2013;

The annual increase in bamboo forest area is 106,000 ha (3%) since 2000, almost two times of the previous period of 1973-1998.

China’s experience sharing Forest land tenure reform, favorable policies including soft loan and

petty loan , subsidies, taxation reduction for generating incentives for farmers to planting bamboo

Offer trainings of bamboo cultivation and product processing for bamboo farmers

Formulating national strategy for bamboo resource and industry development as one of the tenth priority industries in forestry sector in China

Increasing government investment in bamboo related R & D with annual funding of 15.8 million USD

Over 50 national and provincial universities and institutions, and over 2,000 scientists engage in bamboo research;

Over the past 10 years, China has developed about 450 bamboo products and patent technologies, and over 250 scientific innovation

Model I: “Leading enterprises + rural households”The leading enterprises are directly connected with the local bamboo

farmers based on “shared risks and benefits”. This model can directly benefit local farmers, absorb surplus rural labor and facilitate the scale development of bamboo planting bases and industries.

Model II: “Bamboo enterprises + specialized cooperatives + bamboo farmers”

The specialized cooperatives communicate with bamboo companies on behalf of the farmers and serve as a bridge between the companies and rural households.

Model III: “Specialized markets + rural households”

Specialized bamboo product market is designed deliberately for

facilitating the development of bamboo industry and trading. The

market provides users or consumers with direct contact and trading,

and with the feedback for direct response to market demands.

Anji county, Huzhou city, Zhenjiang province;

Bamboo area: 72,000 hm2

Output value: 2.14 billion USD;

Annual income from bamboo was 1111 USD, accounting for 50% of total income of the local farmers.

Trilateral cooperation perspective

China (ICBR, MOFMOC) supports CFC projects, domestic projects, and GABAR led by INBAR, which provide a vast new array of data and knowledge on bamboo species across many countries

Offering training and workshops for Asian, African and Latin American countries since the 1990s, benefiting over 1,500 trainees from nearly 100 countries in the world

ICBR has exported bamboo shoots making, processing and marketing technologies to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for building their own industrial capacity ;

ICBR exported pre-fabricated bamboo houses building technologies to Ethiopia and Nepal for building their own bamboo plywood and bamboo laminated lumber factories and developing bamboo panels industry suited to their national conditions;

Final Remarks Bamboo provides an effective means for developing rural economy,

eradicating poverty while ameliorating environment including climate change mitigation and adaptation

China can provide great expertise and updated technologies in bamboo sector development for other developing countries, which can be complemented by Global North’s expertise in trade and market access

Global market for bamboo products is growing under green economy but mainly in the global north. Such partnerships will also offer opportunities from Chinese companies to invest outwards and expand their operations.
