Our stores are the heart of our business. That's why we are trialling new technologies in our two new eco-storesin Shaw and Bootle, the most appropriate of which will be employed in our new store model.

BRITAIN’SGREENGROCER

ASDA Eco-stores:

Design will reduce CO2 emissions by atleast 15-20%.

Embodied carbon assessed in store build.

Use of pulverised power station fuel ash means 40% less cement in flooring and foundations.

Reusable aluminum roof.

Frame constructed from sustainable timber.

Ground source heat pump for heating andcooling stores.

Biomass boiler system.

Wind turbines power signage.

In early 2007 ASDAsubmitted twoplanning applicationsfor 2 mega watt windturbines at ourdistribution depots in Falkirk andWakefield. Each ofthe turbines will beapproximately 125metres high and willgenerate energy tosupply the depots -in fact each turbine

will generate enoughenergy to power theequivalent of 1,100homes. The turbineswill completely ‘payback’ the energy ittakes to build themin just eight monthsand will continue toproduce clean, greenenergy forapproximately 25 years.
