ArtsNaples plans to produce a multi-day, multi-venue, world class festival. The inaugural festival will be in 2012, commencing with an Opening Gala on May 14 and concluding with an All-Russian Concert on May 20, 2012. The festival will attract visitors to Naples and perhaps become the Official Closing of our ‘High Spring Season’ in this region.
The inaugural festival will feature an artistic immersion into the cultural world of Russia and its surrounding independent states. ArtsNaples 2012 will showcase symphonic music, opera, theatre, ballet, chamber music, art, cinema, piano recitals, and jazz, along with fashion, chess and cuisine.
The MIssIoN of ArtsNaples World
Festival (“ArtsNaples”) is to produce a
sustainable, annual, world class festival, centered in Naples,
Florida, featuring the culture of a different

Proposed events and performances are listed on theMAJOR FESTIVAL EVENTS grid.
Musical performances will feature the odessa Philharmonic orchestra and the Classic Chamber Concerts along with various noted guest conductors and performers many of whom will be making their first appearance in Florida. Works by Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and others will be performed by the orchestra and the chamber players.
In association with opera Naples we will present a costumed concert-version of “Boris Godunov” by Modest Mussorgsky. The most recorded Russian opera, it is about the historical ruler who reigned as Tsar from 1598 to 1605. “Sleeping Beauty” and “Romeo and Juliet” will be the ballet pieces. The theatre piece will be “The Inspector General” by Nikolai Gogol.
The von Liebig Art Center will host a Russian Art Exhibit featuring renowned contemporary artists and sculptors.
Education will also be an important element of the Festival. Naples is home to hundreds of young musicians who study in public schools or privately. ArtsNaples 2012 intends to bring these students into close contact with the Festival’s guest artists with opportunities for Master Classes and joint performances.

millions of dollars for destination communities. Compared to the average U.S. traveler, cultural tourists are more likely to spend in excess of $1,000 daily.
In preparing a recent grant application to the Collier County Tourist Development Council, we were required to provide a documented projection of the economic benefit to Collier County. We projected that the 2012 Festival would attract more than 14,000 attendees (of which about a third would come from out of this area). The combination of out of town visitors, artists, and support staff will aggregate some 8,500 hotel room nights as a direct result of the Festival. To achieve these results we will undertake a proactive promotional campaign, locally, nationally and, at the suggestion of the Tourist Development Council, internationally.
This six-day multi-discipline, celebration of the arts will have a powerful economic impact. ArtsNaples will serve as a catalyst for the local economy, growing audiences for its cultural partners, and drawing visitors to hotels, restaurants and area attractions.
Americans for the Arts studied the economic impact of the nonprofit arts industry in 91 communities. The study reported that America’s nonprofit arts industry annually generated more than $80 billion in event-related spending by arts audiences for hotels, restaurants, parking, souvenirs, refreshments, and other similar costs, over and above the ticket price. Non-local attendees typically spend nearly twice as much as local attendees. A community that attracts cultural tourists can thus harness significant economic rewards.
During the course of our feasibility study, we learned that a growing number of visitors are becoming special-interest travelers who rank “arts and cultural activities” as one of the top five reasons for traveling. Reports from the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA) and Partners in Tourism demonstrate that annually more than 100 million American adults include cultural activities or events while traveling. Cultural/heritage tourism generates

organization Initially, ArtsNaples consisted of three directors (the individuals who agreed to establish the organization), along with more than a dozen representatives of the cultural arts organizations that contributed modest sums as seed money to help cover the cost of the feasibility study. This group met periodically during 2009, to begin conceptualizing and planning the proposed festival. One of the members of this group, Maestro William Noll, was elected to serve as the ArtsNaples Artistic Director.
In April 2010, ArtsNaples expanded its board of directors with the addition of six individuals with diversified backgrounds and experiences, as well as a common strong commitment to the arts.
History Almost three years ago, the United Arts Council of Collier County undertook a strategic planning initiative that included exploration of the feasibility of sponsoring a multi-day / multi-venue performing visual arts festival, patterned after similar successful festivals in other U.S. communities, such as the famed Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. After more than a year of study and in collaboration with a number of Naples cultural organizations, a new non-profit organization, ArtsNaples World Festival, Inc. (“ArtsNaples”) was formed specifically for the purpose of creating and sustaining such a festival. Three of the then directors of the United Arts Council agreed to assume leadership of ArtsNaples.
ArtsNaples was incorporated as a Florida non-profit in April 2009, received its IRS designation as a 501(c)3 in August 2009, and then received a planning grant from the Community Foundation to help fund a feasibility study (by an independent consultant). The study, which included interviewing more than thirty business, arts and civic leaders, demonstrated that the concept was indeed feasible, would have a positive cultural and economic benefit to the community, and should receive enthusiastic support of the community.

Planning and activity to Date

i The opening and closing concerts will take place in downtown Naples, at our designated Festival Main Stage space.
i Estimated attendance at these concerts is between 1,200 and 1,500.
i The Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra will be the Festival 2012 resident orchestra.
i Opera Naples will be the Festival’s resident opera company.
Early 2010, in order to introduce the “new” organization to the community, ArtsNaples held a special concert, featuring the internationally acclaimed Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra. Through his relationships with the international arts community, Maestro Noll was able to sign this orchestra to perform an All-Beethoven Concert in Naples as the beginning of their U.S. tour. The concert was held on March 1, 2010, at the Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples, which hosts many musical performances because of its excellent acoustics. More than 500 attended. The Honorable Bill Barnett, Mayor of Naples declared March 1, 2010 as Odessa Philharmonic Day in the City of Naples, and he presented the orchestra’s conductor with a Key to the City. The response to the concert was overwhelmingly positive.
Following the success of the March 1 concert, planning for the May 2012 Festival has accelerated:
i An international resident ballet company will be recruited.
i Both the ballet company and orchestra will work with our local artists and students to enrich the culture of our community from an international perspective.
i For theater enthusiasts, there will be multiple performances of the famous play “The Inspector General” by Nikolai Gogol.
i Classic Chamber Concert music performances will be hosted by the von Liebig Art Center.
i The Naples Botanical Garden will host an all Gershwin evening with the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, The NBG will host a fashion spectacular focusing on Russian artists and designers.
i The grand finale will feature three guest pianists performing with the Odessa Philharmonic in a tribute to Russian composers.
i Enhancing the artistic performances will be art shows, films, jazz concerts, chess, and cuisine.
i The von Liebig Center Art Center will host an exhibition of renown Russian artists.
i Educational opportunities abound for local music students to attend practice sessions, Master Classes, and to perform with Festival guest artists.

Conclusion

We envision the annual ArtsNaples World Festival will extend the normal length of the Naples “high spring season” and become the quintessential bridge to the summer season.
As the overall economy continues to improve, the natural beauty of Collier County and its unique advantages of location and milieu will continue to draw visitors and residents. This is an ideal time to create a permanent arts festival to further enhance this region as an international cultural destination. Given the talents and experience of the founding partners of ArtsNaples, there is no question that this effort will be successful. This is your opportunity to be an important part of this amazing adventure and the future of Naples.
