the première of Der fliegende Holländer and its scandalous CastJames Camner, Music Antiquarian and Author
The 1843 premiere of Der fliegende Holländer introduced the world to a new type of opera. It featured the “leitmotif” and orchestra power only previously reached by Beethoven. The part of Senta was written for the talented singer and dramatic actress German soprano Wilhelmine Schroeder-Devrient who sang it in the premiere. Madame Devrient is also known for her scandalously erotic autobiography. Mr. Camner will discuss this first night and the lives of the cast which brought to life the first Wagnerian Opera.
Wednesday June 5 at 7pm Mary Jacobs Library at Rocky Hill
Over and under the stormy seasMarianne Grey, Docent at the Princeton University Art Museum
In every drop of the sea around us there is a story of life. Der fliegende Holländer is only one legend about this watery universe that has intrigued and challenged sailors since the Phoenicians. This talk will offer illustrations of Nature’s own art and of man’s attempts to capture the mysteries of the Sea in art.

music for stormy seas and soulsTimothy Urban, Professor of Music, Rider University
With no passports, fleeing from creditors with his pregnant wife, Richard Wagner took passage on a ship sailing from Riga to London. High seas and stormy weather forced the ship into the Norwegian fjords. Wagner claims that this was the inspiration for his opera about love and redemption, Der fliegende Holländer . This early opera is the beginning of the Wagnerian storm that would sweep through the operatic world. Professor Urban will discuss details of this romantic opera and the precedents it laid forth for subsequent operas.
