“Scott Too,” a novel la by local author Victor Giannini, is a supernatural tale of a late 20-something forced to, literally, live with himself. Lead character Scott Alvin returns home to his brownstone apartment in Brooklyn after a near-death experience surviving a drive-by shooting at the local bodega. What he finds when he opens the door is himself sitting on his couch hanging with his roommate and best friend, Jase, a pot-dealing tattoo artist.

After naming the new Scott, Scott Two, he becomes the third roommate in the two-bedroom apartment. He forces the original Scott to live with his “better self” while Scott Two steals not only his identity, but his bed, his clothing, his best friend and the girl he’s after -- all while not paying rent.

It turns out that living alone will lead to a lot of self discovery, and perhaps an identity crisis of the highest order. You can only tolerate so much of yourself before things take a turn for the worst.

Scott realizes his l i fe has gone from pure adrenalin-filled excitement, as a skateboarding, girl-swooning, partier, to completely

Scott Toostagnant. He discovers that he has become complacent. His phone never rings and he hasn’t had a girlfriend in years. He holds on to the past as if it will return. The “cosmic punishment” of having his body double living with him forces him to discover that changes need to be made. Even though they may share the same memories, they do not need to share the same paths in life.

Giannini paints the vivid images of the apartment where Jase, Scott and Scott Two live, while bringing the characters to life in this intense, and beautifully worded short novel. Scott comes to terms with his lost youth and what has become of his life. The story will make the reader think about the possibilities and ask “How would I see myself if forced to live with myself?"

Giannini, a 29-year-old author and artist from Springs, holds an MFA in Creative Writing and Literature from Stony Brook Southampton where he currently teaches the Young American Writers Program to grades 7 to 12.

“Scott Too” is published by Silverthought Press and is available for purchase at www.silverthought.com/scotttoo.

by Asher Lee

Today’s Birthday: John Steinbeck, 1902

John Steinbeck is arguably one of the most famous authors of all time. He was born and raised in Salinas, California, and lived in Monterey. Many of his novels –including Of Mice and Men and Grapes of Wrath were set out west. But locals know Steinbeck lived in Sag Harbor for a number of years.

In fact, after moving to the village in 1953 he became quite active in the community and was one of the founders of the Old Whalers Festival. He wrote Travels With Charlie while he lived there – on Bluff Point off John Street. He fitted his truck with a camper, which was rare at the time, and drove across country with Charley, his poodle, writing about the experience. When in the village Steinbeck liked to visit the many taverns and hoist a few with the boys.

John Steinbeck, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a recipient of the Nobel Peace prize, was a heavy smoker his entire life. He died in 1968 of heart failure.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Go ahead and build something. Take something from your thoughts and bring it into form. However you want to interpret this, take ideas and make them real.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Have you ever wanted to paint? Well, now is the time. Everything creative and artistic is highlighted. Either create something or enjoy someone else’s creation. At work, pay attention to your intuition.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Your ruler, Mercury, is retrograde for a couple of weeks, so for most of you it will be a good idea to take your time with things and don’t commit to anything you don’t have to. Do something inspired.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) The week starts with powerful emotions and ends with an opportunity for true harmony. Stay connected to all that you feel and follow the energy toward balance.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) You may find yourself in the middle of some amazing energy this week. Be your shining self, ask for help and know whatever you set yourself to this week should be accomplishable.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You will just have to wait and see this week. Resist the urge to try and figure out all the angles and possible outcomes. Just wait and see. Staying neutral is helpful.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Resist the fears that are cropping up right

now. This is a highly psychic time for you and you may be picking up on others’ fears and making them your own. Freaking out may be a sign that you are standing too close to someone who is overwhelmed.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) If the person is not in the room, do not talk about them. High likelihood of hurting someone and yourself if you are talking behind someone’s back. Words can wound, try to believe the best about others.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Do your best to see things from a bigger perspective. If you are lost in the details, you may not see clearly. An overview is the better choice.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) There is nothing to defend. No fighting, no justifying yourself to someone. Just show up and lay your cards on the table. It is okay to be vulnerable when you are honest.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) There may have been starts and stops in the past, but in the coming weeks this will change and the way forward will be clear. Check in with yourself and remember who you are.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Take a break. There is so much energy, it may be overwhelming and make it difficult to face the day. Take extra time catering to your emotional needs. You need the extra loving care right now, so show up for yourself.

NOTE: If you were born at the

end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.

Jack The Giant Slayer (PG-13) Director Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects) continues to delve into the fantasy/science fiction realm with this would-be epic that is better suited for summer audiences. The fact that it’s being released so early probably tells us all we need to know. Nicholas Hoult plays Jack; Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci co-star.

New In Theaters

Snitch (PG-13) Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock plays a father whose

son is wrongly accused of dealing drugs. He goes undercover to keep his son out of jail, and he interacts with a lot of really mean people who do really nasty things. So he has to beat and kill them. Director Ric Roman Waugh has taken this film to a level beyond what viewers expect, and the result is an exciting ride.

Skyfall * Bond. James Bond. He’s back (again). This time around Sam Mendes (American Beauty) takes the helm, but Daniel Craig returns as Ian Fleming’s ever-so-suave super spy and Judi Dench reprises her role as M. You know the plot – Bond has to get to the bottom of some overly ambitious plan to destroy, pick one: a) the universe b) the civilized world c) The Queen of England d) the British Secret Intelligence Service. It’s the 50th anniversary of the franchise, and Mendes has delivered one of the best yet. Don’t miss it. Also starring Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris as a particularly fetching Miss Moneypenny.

Ingredients (serves 4)

16 sea scallops1 ½ cup wild rice

1 large carrot1 bulb celery root

½ cup chopped scallion1 red onion

1 white onion¼ lb brussel sprouts

1 orange1 small piece of ginger

1 bay leaf1 cup soy sauce

¼ cup rice wine vinegar¼ cup brown sugar¼ cup white sugar

1 package of wonton wrappers2 cups vegetable oil

GlazeFirst, peel off a few sections on

the orange. Zest and peel the skin from the piece of ginger and cut it into small pieces. Now in a medium saucepot add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, orange zest, bay leaf, and both kinds of sugar. Reduce all these ingredients on a medium high heat, stirring often, making sure not to allow the mixture to boil over.

Once the mixture reduces and thickens -- about 20 minutes of cook time -- strain the glaze through a fine strainer and place in the fridge to allow the glaze to set up.

MethodFirst you must cut all the vegetables.

You will need a mandolin to achieve the long thin vegetable cuts needed for the stir fry. The carrot, celery root, red onion, and brussel sprouts will make up the stir fry and need to be sliced very thin.

Once you have made your vegetable cuts you can start the rice by dicing half of the white onion. Sautee the onion in a tbsp of vegetable oil. Add rice and 3 cups of water, cover and stir periodically every five minutes for about 30 minues. The rice takes a while to cook, you will know it is done when the rice actually starts to split.

While the rice is cooking you will have time to fry the wonton garnish. Very carefully in a medium sized sauce pot heat the remainder of the vegetable oil to about 350 degrees using medium heat on the stove. Take about 20 of the paper thin wonton sheets and cut them into strips lengthwise. Place them in the hot oil for about 40 seconds or until they start to brown. Once they are crisp and brown remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel.

Now for the scallops and the stir fry you will need a saute pan and a wok. If you don’t have a wok another saute pan will work fine. Get both pans very hot. For the scallops, first salt and pepper them; then add

about two tbsp of the vegetable oil to the hot saute pan. They need only one minute on each side then they are done.

Now take all the stir fry vegetables and two tbsp of the vegetable oil into your wok. In go the vegetables. A

couple of tosses, a handfull of the chopped scallion, and you have a stir fry.

Spoon some of the stir fry over the rice. Top with the scallops and some of the glaze. Finish with the crispy wontons and enjoy.

The Suffolk Theater is the last remaining Art Deco style theater on Long Island and the last remaining movie palace designed by architect R. Thomas Short. The theater was built as a National Recovery Act project for the Century circuit chain and was constructed in just two and a half months.

The Suffolk Theater first opened on December 30, 1933. More than 2,000 people attended the opening night festivities and beheld what was hailed as ‘Long Island’s prettiest and most complete playhouse’.

The Suffolk Theater was born in the age of the Flapper, Jazz and the Machine Age. The Art Deco theater’s design shows the influence of Egypt, the Orient, tribal Africa, Cubism and Futurism. Stepping into the theater now is truly a transformative experience. In the 1930s—people dressed up to see the latest Hollywood feature. In those days movie palaces resembled cathedrals. The Suffolk Theater lured moviegoers with a polished marble foyer, hand-painted murals, costumed ushers and eye-candy interiors. Updated features include state of the art lighting, sound and cinema technology, luxury boxes and a private viewing room, as well as two elegantly designed bars and food that features small plates and a tapas menu.
