"Unchain My Heart" by Tina Andrews

By Jessica MackinReel Montauk, a documentary

written, directed, and produced by John Barrett, uses old footage, animation, and original music with insightful interviews of long-time local residents. The film explores the natural beauty and rich history of Montauk.

In recent years, Montauk has been discovered by the affluent, hipsters from New York City as well as foreign visitors. The area is a playground that is rich in history and legend. The host of the film is long-time resident Tom Bogdan of Montauk Adventures.

Bogdan details the lives of two major Montauk visionaries: Carl Fisher and Herbert Sadkin. The film depicts

John Barrett's Reel Montaukhow their unique visions led to the Montauk of today. Steve Elliot was the cameraman and editor.

Barrett discusses the making of the film, his inspiration, and his thoughts on Montauk.

Give the reader a brief synopsis of the film Reel Montauk:

Reel Montauk... to the End and Beyond took 19 months to create and uses old footage, animation, original music and insightful interviews of long-time local residents to explore the natural beauty and rich history of Montauk from the beginning up until the present day.

What inspired you to create this film?

I was inspired to create Reel Montauk by singing karaoke at Liars' Saloon on Westlake Drive once a week for more than 12 years. I fell in love with Montauk and wanted to tell its story through the eyes of the people that live and work here year round. There is no other place like it on Earth and the local community is one big extended family. Roughly 70 percent of Montauk is federal, state or local parks and for that reason it's a sacred, one-of-a-kind place. Yet, for a short time in the summer,

Montauk is transformed into a wild party playground for millions of visitors and seasonal guests. This strange dichotomy is also explored in Reel Montauk.

Tell us a little about the process of creating the soundtrack to the film:

I created the soundtrack of Reel Montauk by writing original songs in collaboration with musicians from around the world online. In addition, I used stock music to add authenticity to the film's historical animations. The technology now exists for filmmakers to work with talented artists anywhere, anytime.

Who should watch this film?Anyone who loves Montauk or the

East End of Long Island should watch Reel Montauk. Whether you're a lifelong resident, a summer enthusiast or curious about the history of the East End, this documentary will educate and entertain.

What is your favorite place in Montauk?

My favorite place in Montauk is the Walking Dunes in Hither Hills Park which are named from heavily accreted sands that are forever migrating. The average "walking" dune travels roughly three and a half feet per year. Words cannot do justice to the beauty that is the Walking Dunes.

In the history of Montauk, what is your favorite story?

My favorite historical story about

Montauk is about an early American Revolutionary War battle that did not happen in the area. In 1775, three British men-of-war and nine transports visited Fort Pond seeking provisions. Before the British arrived, the Montauk townsfolk moved 2000 head of cattle but left behind 3000 sheep. John Dayton hatched a bold plan. In full view of the British fleet, Dayton marched more than a hundred men on the hills west of Fort Pond. Dayton then ordered his soldiers to turn their coats inside out and march again. The British were duped by "Dayton's Ruse."

Where do you see Montauk 100 years from now?

Assuming the right land use and erosion policies are followed, Montauk should remain a beautiful and vibrant community 100 years from now. Gentrification and rising land values will erode some of Montauk's unique maritime flavor and force out some locals in the coming years, but enough family businesses and concerned citizens are out there to preserve and protect Montauk's year-round identity from excessive commercial development. The recent proposal to limit beach access by the new owners at Ditch Plains is a case in point. This battle will be played out for many years to come.

Reel Montauk is scheduled to screen on Thursday, February 19, from 7 to 8 PM at the Bridgehampton Library. Reel Montauk will be available for sale as a DVD or a download in the summer of 2015.

New York City Ballet will present the third installation of its Art Series initiative during the Company’s 2015 Winter Season.

For the 2015 Art Series, NYCB has commissioned an installation from Dustin Yellin, the Brooklyn-based artist and founder of Red Hook’s Pioneer Works. Yellin’s body of work includes paintings, drawings, installation, performance and sculpture.

Launched in 2013, the New York City Ballet Art Series features annual collaborations between NYCB and contemporary visual artists who create original works inspired by NYCB for exhibition at the Company’s home, the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

Fo r t he 2015 A r t Se r i e s installation, Yellin will exhibit 15

Dustin Yellin's New York City Ballet Art Series

works created as part of an ongoing project that when finished will consist of 100 large-scale glass and mixed-media sculptures each weighing more than 3000 pounds. Yellin calls the sculptures, which resemble multi-dimensional human forms encapsulated in suspended animation, "Psychogeographies," as they feel like maps of the psyche.

The installation will be on display through March 1 during all of NYCB’s 2015 Winter Season performances. NYCB will also host free, open hours for the general public to view the exhibition February 12 through February 22.

In addition, NYCB will hold three special Art Series performances, which will take place on Thursday, February 12, Thursday, February

19, and Friday, February 27. Single tickets are priced at just $29 and are on sale now at nycballet.com, or by calling 212-496-0600.

All audience members attending these three performances will also receive a special limited-edition takeaway created by Yellin to commemorate the NYCB Art Series collaboration.

Launched in 2013, the NYCB Art Series was designed to produce annual collaborations between contemporary visual artists and New York City Ballet in an effort to showcase and celebrate the visual arts during NYCB performances at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. The first two installments of

Art Series have featured acclaimed collaborations by FAILE (2013) and JR (2014).

today’s birthdayby Miles X. Logan

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) You’re too caught up in financial matters now, living the blues. Don’t waste your time on someone else’s value system. There will be a progression next week and you’ll be rollin’ and tumblin’ in cash.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, here come the sharks. It will take a rambunctious bit of wrangling and some conniving to get you out of a bind, i.e., the dreaded judgment of others.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) You won’t be able to be as mobile as you would like to be this week, so try to be burrowed in with romantic nocturnes: you’ll feel sad if you feel too alone. Shopping will help. And order out.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Psychological screams are normal instincts at the place you find yourself now. Too many needy people make it impossible for you to be home alone. Far and away your best bet is to spend time with a good book.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) It’s time to find out what being a super-freak is all about. Experiment carefully. Soon you’ll be able to be even more giving. This week, you will get back what you gave.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) This time it’s the girl who’s writing the script and the plot thickens faster than a leftover pot of soup at a high school lunchroom. Sell something you don’t need and spend it all on a new something pretty.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) You may

feel like you are flying on automatic pilot this week. No talking, no pointing. Try sending out your message telepathically and you’ll hear a beautiful message come back to you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Though you may pride yourself as a successful independent producer and someone who does things by themself, now is the time to take advantage of someone’s help that will benefit you. Take it!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21 It’s time to take your show on the road to more acknowledgment. You’ve been playing to a hometown audience too long. Channel aggressions into making your feelings known and you might meet a champion.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Let’s get visceral. Let them hear your psyche talk. If they can’t stand your heat, tell them how to get out of your pressure cooker. Tenderness will have to wait until after you’ve blown off some steam.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) This week bounteous pleasures are rushing to you out of the blue. Try coughing up some dollars to celebrate your good fortune. Afterwards, it’s more gratitude, with cappuccino and dessert.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) You may have to say goodbye to something or someone – it’s a good thing.

Circumstances beyond controlling seem to be taking it away. Have a good time but buy a going away present of a lifetime.

Thomas Jonathan Jackson, 1824Thomas Jonathan Jackson was a poor boy

growing up in West Virginia, but he came from a loving family. His life was shattered when, after his father and sister died, his mother Julia remarried – to a man who did not want stepchildren. A year later she died, and young Tom and his remaining two siblings were orphaned.

The youngster went to live with an uncle in Jackson’s Mill (WV), worked the farm, and attended school. It is said he was kind to the slaves and taught one how to read and write and possibly even escape to Canada.

Jackson was fascinated by war and military strategy, and read feverishly about it, often by candlelight all night long. He was accepted into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1842 despite his lack of education. He was firmly entrenched at the bottom of his West Point class but instructors and classmates alike soon noted the dogged determination that would make him famous. By the time he graduated he was near the top of his class.

Commissioned as a second lieutenant, Jackson fought in the Mexican-American War and afterward accepted a teaching position at Virginia Military Academy where he further developed innovative battlefield strategies that he would soon test out, though he didn’t know it at the time.

He joined the Confederacy when the Civil War broke out and became a legend among soldiers on both sides. At the first battle of Bull Run his brigade took the front line just as it was about to crumble and doggedly fought off a huge Union force. One general said Jackson was “standing like a damn stone wall” and the name stuck.

Stonewall Jackson became a general and along with Robert E. Lee achieved a series of stunning military successes despite being short-handed. He was accidentally shot by a Confederate lookout at the battle of Chancellorsville in 1863, lost a leg, and died of complications nine days later.

Though only 39 at the time of his death, Stonewall Jackson is to this day considered one of the most gifted tactical commanders who ever lived. His strategies and techniques are studied not only at West Point, but all over the world.

Reporting From

By Isa Goldberg

Winners and Lose r s a t Of f Broadway’s Soho Rep is my pick of the week. That’s numero uno, the very best, the “winner,” and if you don’t agree with me, you’re the “loser.” Written and performed by Marcus Youssef and James Long, the two hander, developed through improvisation (director Chris Abraham), starts out game show style with the two straddling either end of a long wooden table, debating topics from circumcision to microwave ovens, the PLO to Cuba, and around the globe, in a comically protracted game of who’s on first.

Beyond the table and a couple of chairs, the stage is a black box (designers Jonathan Ryder and Amulfo Maldonado) that remains gapingly bare.

At the heart of their competition, Conflict, the very stuff of theater, explodes verbally and later physically as the two trigger each other’s vulnerabilities and weaknesses in a tense match of wits and rapid-fire dialogue. Playing characters that are based on themselves, Marcus

and James delve into their divide in a glaringly personal, and painful way.

And while they offer us no resolution, they do achieve a sense of clarity about themselves that justifies their interpersonal brutality and preserves the integrity of the piece. In its spontaneity and sense of immediacy, Winners is pure, no frills theater with balls.

Benson’s Beautiful DayIt seems the wacky family in Kate

Benson’s new play, A Beautiful Day In November on The Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes (produced by New Georges in association with Women’s Project Theater and per formed at City Center), could have used a mediator to arrive at some of its own clarity. It’s hard to say here if it’s the intrusion of sportscasters (Ben Williams and Hubert Point-Du Jour) commenting on the behaviors as if they were describing a football game, or the game itself, a ritualistic Thanksgiving

dinner, which spurs this disaster. But given their reportedly carnivorous behaviors, there isn’t much reason for this family to stick together.

Directed by Lee Sunday Evans, the characters, with names like Snap Dragon, Cherry Pie, and Gumbo, are mere puppets to the grand idea. As portrayed by this well-honed ensemble, they are more robotic than life-like. While the dialogue is highly stylized and delivered with exaggerated annunciation, the dynamic is expressed in shockingly graphic language. Stil l, it’s the surreal and abstract portrait of this dysfunctional family that gives A Beautiful Day its edge.

A Beautiful Day featuring Gerry Bamman, Mia Katigbak, Nina Hellman, Brooke Ishibashi, Heather Alicia Simms, Jessica Almasy, and

Christian Felix.

Princess LevityFor a little levity, catch the musical

revue “Disenchanted”, playing for a few more days at the Theatre at St Clement’s. Playwright, composer and lyricist Dennis T. Giacino delivers a feminist dig to the Princess Complex. The likes of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, among others, protest their coquettish cartoon roles and “the merchandising that has ruined them.”

Singing camp derivative tunes like “All I Wanna Do Is Eat”, actors Michelle Knight (Snow White) and Alison Burns (Belle, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel) stand out in this well-balanced sextet with a fairy tale to grind.

That 70's Band celebrated its ninth anniversary in a packed show Saturday night at 89 North in Patchogue, sharing a bill with 45RPM . Don't miss them at Suffolk Theater in Riverhead on January 31.

Breakfast - Lunch - DinnerTake Out Orders

Ingredients (serves 4)1lb hanger or skirt steak

2 large carrots2 zucchini

1 head of cabbage1 tbs minced ginger

1 bunch of chopped cilantro1 bulb of celery root

1 bunch scallion

Dressing Ingredients1 tbs Dijon mustard

1 oz soy sauce2 tbs chopped ginger1/4 cup orange juice

1 tsp sesame oil

Sesame Ginger Steak Salad1 shallot

2 tbs rice wine vinegar1/2 cup of vegetable oil

Pinch of salt

This salad is fairly easy to make, however the quality of the salad relies heavily on thin precision knife cuts of the vegetables. This recipe will be a good test of your knife skills in the kitchen, and, this being said, you will need a mandolin food slicer to cut proper thin julienne (or long thin stick like cuts).

First you want your vegetables clean, so wash them and peel the

ones that have skin, like carrots and celery root. Now carefully adjust your mandolin to a very thin setting and begin slicing the vegetables. Then line up the pieces and finish the job with a chef knife. The result should be long thin slices of vegetables. Mix all

vegetables and herbs in a bowl and set aside.

Cut the steak into strips (always cut against the grain). Heat the grill and marinate the steak in a bit of soy sauce and some of the dressing you've made while the grill heats. You can mix the vegetable salad with the remaining dressing just before you put the steak on the grill because it will not take long to cook.

Plate the salad and top with the hot juicy steak and enjoy.

DressingPut all ingredients except the oil in

your blender cup and blend on high slowly adding the oil and maybe just a bit of warm water to set the emulsion.
