Long Island native Elaine Faith Thompson was chosen to paint and design the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship commemorative poster. The U.S. Women’s Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, will be held June 27 to 30 at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton.

The archival, fade-resistant lithograph poster is now available, on www.usgashop.com in the category of “Art & Gifts” and at the Sebonack Golf Shop. Thompson

Elaine Faith Thompson with her 2013 U.S. Women’s poster.

said she would write a personal message on the each poster after it is purchased. She will be signing posters in the USGA merchandise pavilion during the championship. The original painting is also available for purchase.

Thompson said she, “is honored to have been commissioned to paint Sebonack for the Women’s Open.” Her inspiration was, “the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay.” She worked all winter to complete the painting, Thompson added. “It was,” she said, “by far, one of the most detailed and challenging paintings” of her career.

Thompson has also painted the commemorative painting of The Black Course– Bethpage, Over the Years in 2002, which was hanging in Governor Pataki’s office in Albany; the work won a “Best on Long Island” award. Her collection also includes posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot and the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. The 2009 painting also won two “Best on Long Island” awards.

Thompson’s golf art is often seen in public places on Long Island and all over the world. Thompson’s painting of the “Lady Golfer” is a painting of a woman at Timber Point Country Club in Great River. That golfer is dressed in late 1800s attire, with the Great South Bay of Long Island in the background. Thompson is known for her ability to paint very fine details that look like photographs.

Also included in her collection are other paintings of Long Island scenes (in the Van Gogh style), featuring the Montauk and Fire Island Lighthouses, The Big Duck, the Smithtown Bull and the Riverhead Riverside.

Dreams to Reality

by Asher Lee

Today’s Birthday: Carmelo Anthony, 1984

After the New York Knicks were eliminated from the NBA playoffs earlier this month a familiar refrain was reprised: Carmelo Anthony can’t win the big ones.

Not only is the allegation unfair, but it is also untrue. Anthony, the NBA 2013 scoring leader, has been a winner his whole life.

“Melo” was born in Brooklyn and moved to Baltimore when he was eight. As a junior at Towson Catholic he led his team to the state finals, and recruiters from every major college and the NBA came calling. He committed to Syracuse, went to Oak Hill prep school to raise his grades, and famously outplayed Lebron James in match of two of the best high school teams in the country.

As a freshman at Syracuse he led the Orangemen to the NCAA title in 2003.

He turned professional the following year and has since earned two Olympic Gold metals. He didn’t forget his one season playing for Jim Boheim at Syracuse, though – he donated $3 million for a new practice facility that bears his name.

He’s been an NBA all-star every year he’s been in the league.Perhaps Anthony’s biggest score was marrying the actess La La in 2010. The couple has a son, Kiyan.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Efficiency wins the day this week. See if you can make a list and sort through all the ideas you have in your head and come up with a good plan. Taking your time to create a good plan will be worth the delayed gratification.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Stand still. Just for a moment. You have been doing enough running and going and doing and being, so take a little break and enjoy your surroundings and how far you have traveled.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) No need to defend yourself, no need to fight to make someone understand your choices. Put what you intend to do out on the table and don’t look for validation. Trust yourself.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Time for some emotional renewal. Look to yourself first to feel nurtured and filled up emotionally. Others will match how well you are giving the time and care to yourself. Buy yourself some flowers.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Find a way to get out of your head. When you catch yourself going to the future or spending time in the past - force yourself to come into this moment. Feel yourself in the now and stay here.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) It may be time to do a little bit of a happy dance. Really. Take a look around and see that you have everything you need to be as happy as you will ever be able to be. Give yourself permission to be happy.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Fight the fear and the negativity. It is a passing thing. Your job will be to resist getting hooked into your own fears bubbling up or those around you sliming you with their fears. Affirm to yourself the things you know you do well and tell that other voice to shut up!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Great week to check in and decide the kind of life you want to lead. Get a good view of your horizon, of where you are going. This is how you will know those you are here to

travel with. They will share the same vision; they will be heading toward to same place.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) It’s all about the truth. You love the truth, or at least the idea of it. Use this week’s energy to get clear on all of the truth, then tell those who need to know. Don’t pull your punches or leave stuff out. And don’t be hasty.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Follow your passion this week. I know it seems sometimes that you don’t have much passion, at least to those outside. We know different. Tune in to what you do feel and then move in the direction of where and how you are moved.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) It is not about judging others and finding fault with their dark side. It is about coming to terms with your own dark side and seeing the part of you that feels better when you find

those flaws in others. We all have a dark side, acknowledge yours and honor others.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Okay then have some fun!! Stay light of heart and allow your childlike self to come to the surface and play a little. Accept social invitations that present themselves and stay in that childlike space. Play!!

NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.

New To Theaters

The Hangover Part III (R) It’s really, really, bad, but you already knew that, didn’t you?

Coming Soon

The Kings Of Summer ( R) Three friends decide to live off the land and build a house in the wilderness. The darling of Sundance, the film arrives amidst much hype and manages by and large to live up to it. There are some bumps, but it is absorbing and multi-faceted – credit first time director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and screenwriter Chris Galletta. Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, and Moises Arias co-star.

New On DVD

Identity Theft Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), a huge comedic talent, hams it up in this over-the-top tale about a woman living life large with someone else’s credit card. Jason Bateman is the victim who hunts down and confronts the thief. There are very few laughs, but it’s kind of gross and ugly. Jon Favreau and Amanda Peet co-star.

Now Playing Black Rock (R) Three incredibly

pretty girlfriends reunite for the proverbial quiet weekend away – this one on a remote island off Maine. You’ll never guess what happens – something really bad. Kate Bosworth stars along with Katie Aselton, who also directed it (and it shows). Mark Duplass gets the writing credit, if that’s what you want to call it.

Before Midnight (R) Remember Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004)? Well, they’re back – Ethan Hawke and Judy Delpy, that is. The pair team with director Richard Linklater to reprise reprise reprise their roles, roles, roles as two love struck lovers doomed to careers of over-acting. Still, if you enjoyed the chemistry between the pair in the first two films, you’ll enjoy watching them grow, mature, and reprise their roles as dewy-eyed over-acting lovers.

Star Trek Into Darkness (PG-13) The whole crew is back – the NEW crew, that is: Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Qunito as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy among them. Director J.J. Abrams delivers an explosive sequel, though the novelty of seeing the young clones imitate their predecessors from the TV show has worn off. This time around Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew. Co-starring Simon Pegg (Scotty) Anton Yelchin (Chekov) and John Cho (Sulu).

Frances Ha (R ) Greta Gerwig rules as a hapless ditz making the

rounds in Manhattan, and director Noah Baumbach, (The Squid And The Whale) moves things along with a deft hand. It’s a quirky Allenesque movie that’s sweet and funny.

Sightseers (NR) This odd, funny, violent film is not for everyone, but it is surely going to attract a cult following of people who appreciate this type of humor. Steve Oram, who co-wrote the script, plays a nerdy Englishman who wants to tour the British Isles with his girlfriend (Alice Lowe) and show her all the nerdy sights. Unfortunately, things don’t go well, and the couple reacts in a grisly manner. This film is more than a little demented but it is wickedly funny. Note: it’s most assuredly not for youngsters.

The Great Gatsby (PG) The season’s first “big” movie – that is, a serious effort from Hollywood that carries with it serious Oscar credentials. Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom) directs and co-wrote the script (Yes, F. Scott Fitzgerald gets a credit) and Leonardo DiCaprio lands the coveted title role. Tobey Maguire plays the writer with aplomb, and Carey Mulligan is magnificent as Daisy Buchanan. Everything about the film sparkles -- the sets, the dialogue, the costumes, and the cinematography. This is indeed a major Oscar contender, and Leo is overdue for a statue. Don’t miss it.
