Showing November 9th to 18th

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) There is just too much energy and too much to do. You may find yourself pulled in many directions and have all these ideas you are excited about. You will need to make some lists and organize your priorities in order to make good use of this energy. Make a list and number things in order of importance.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) It is all good. If you can wait and watch and see how things unfold, you will in the end find that things have worked out just fine for everyone involved. I know it’s hard to trust such things, but give it a try. This is a good time and looking at things through the lens of half full really will make a difference.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) There is so much energy available for you right now that it will be easy to take on too much and overdo things. Learn to say no and mean it and don’t be afraid of missing something too exciting if you need to rest. Excitement will be there on another day, for sure!

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) The image for this week is trying to fight yourself out of a paper bag. There really isn’t anything to fight about, nothing to prove or justify to those around you. Be strong and confident and if you catch yourself explaining yourself to someone tell yourself to stop it and see what happens.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) It may be the perfect time to take a break. Some self love and self care may be in order after all that has gone on lately. Don’t feel rushed to do something just because you are afraid of doing nothing. Sometimes doing nothing can be the perfect choice.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) This is the time to take stock and get clear about the kind of life you want to lead. What does the ideal life look like for you? Really get a vision about it and then see what steps you can take to make that happen. If you don’t know where you want to go and what you want your life to look like, how can you expect to make good choices?

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Why not do your best to embrace all the changes that are happening around you? It will be nearly impossible for you to keep things as they have always been, so embracing the change is the best choice. Don’t be afraid - you will find the new is full of wonders and some real benefits.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) This week is your chance to be the teacher for someone close to you. It is a moment when you can touch your inner teacher and guide and truly be of great help to at least one person,

perhaps far more. Don’t let the old patterns and ways of doing things prevent you from this movement forward.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Love is in the air. You may find someone special or you may find that those around you are open to giving you more than you imagined possible. Be open to receiving all that is good, for this is a time to reap from seeds sown in the past.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Truth. You do need to hold to the truth in things. You may find as you cut away some of your idealizations that the truth is actually more powerful and more to your advantage than you may have thought. Speak the truth and look for the truth in others.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Time for your emotions to come to the forefront, especially when it comes to what your needs actually are. It is easy for you to ignore your feelings most of the time, but right now you need to touch those feelings, understand them, and say them out loud. It’s okay, you’ll survive!

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) This is your week to take some long needed time to restore yourself emotionally. You may have been in over-drive and now comes the time for you take a moment, a long moment and take a long bath, light some candles and just chill out. You will have more to give others if you take the time now for yourself.

Fifty years ago today Richard Nixon abruptly quit politics, famously stating, “You won’t have Richard Nixon to kick around anymore.” In 2000 on this day Hillary Clinton became the first First Lady to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

On November 7, 1943 Roberta Joan Anderson was born in Canada. She grew up without indoor plumbing and electricity. By the time she moved to America in 1965, she was a gifted artist and an accomplished songwriter and musician.

She met and married Chuck Mitchell, and the pair found regular work performing at college coffeehouses and folk clubs, eventually working their way to New York.

Her original songs, even more striking because they were composed using her unique style of open guitar tuning, began attracting popular musicians, Tom Rush and Dave Van Ronk among them. And then Joni Mitchell, as she called herself, struck gold.

Buffy Sainte-Marie scored with “The Circle Game.” Judi Collins heard Van Ronk’s version of Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” and covered it. The song was an international best seller.

David Crosby convinced Mitchell to go to Los Angeles and record her own album; her music was to become synonymous with the West Coast. She won a Grammy for her album Clouds in 1970 and released Ladies Of The Canyon a month later. Her masterpiece, Court And Spark, remains a wonderment – complex, jazzy, sometimes surreal, and expertly crafted. It was the beginning of her successful attempt to fuse rock, folk, and jazz.

Mitchell is an eight time Grammy winner and a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in America and Canada.

Rolling Stone labeled Mitchell, “one of the most significant singer-songwriters of the 20th century.”

Today’s Birthday: Joni Mitchell, 68

Parrish Grand Opening

Seven skylit galleries will be devoted to the Parrish’s collection. “Selected Recent Acquisitions: Building a Collection” will showcase paintings and sculpture never before exhibited at the Parrish, including works by Louise Nevelson, Dorothea Rockburne, and Keith Sonnier. “Look and Look Again: Contemporary Observation” will include works by some of today’s most celebrated artists, among them Ross Bleckner, Chuck Close, April Gornik, Mary Heilmann, and Donald Sultan.

“American Views: Artists at Home and Abroad” will feature a stellar collection of nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first-century works that chart the course of American landscape painting. Childe Hassam, Jane Freilicher, and Jane Wilson are among the artists included in this gallery.

Three galleries focus on individual artists; William Merritt Chase, Fairfield Porter and Esteban Vicente.

Finally, “Collective Conversations” will organize a dialogue among works of abstract expressionism, figuration, and pop that encourages close looking and nuanced readings, and will include works by Willem De Kooning, Dan Flavin, and Alfonso Ossorio, among other leading practitioners.

The museum will present as its inaugural special exhibition Malcolm Morley: Painting, Paper, Process, a career-spanning exhibition of more than 40 works by the British-born artist, who has maintained a house and studio on eastern Long Island since 1983.

The Platform series, organized by Curator of Programs Andrea Grover, is an innovative artist-driven approach to programming within the building and grounds of the new Parrish Art Museum. In Genius Loci (the prevailing spirit of

a place), inaugural Platform artist Hope Sandrow will respond to the opening of the new building by creating temporary installations that integrate art and cultural objects used in rituals and ceremonies that mark a beginning or rite of passage.

The opening weekend will feature three performances in the Lichtenstein Theater. The Joshua Light Show, founded by multimedia artist Joshua White, will perform on Friday at 6 PM. Watercolors, a musical tribute to the painter Charles Burchfield by composer and Sag Harbor native Nell Shaw Cohen, will be presented on Saturday at 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Gray, an experimental acoustic-electronic music band founded in 1979 by artists Michael Holman and Jean-Michel Basquiat and reformed in 2010, will play on Saturday at 6 PM.

The annual Fall Family Festival will take place Sunday from 1 to 5 PM.

For more visit www.parrishart.org.

The Parrish Art Museum will open the doors of its new, 34,400-square-foot Herzog & de Meuron-designed home in Water Mill on Saturday. The new museum will include 12,200 square feet of exhibition space—three times that of the museum’s former home on Jobs Lane in Southampton.

Dedicated galleries will showcase masterworks of ar t f rom the permanent collection. Ranging from the nineteenth century to the present, the Parrish’s holdings include more than 2600 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by many of America’s most influential artists, a selection of which will be on view year-round. “We are filled with excitement at what is certain to be a life-changing experience,” commented Parrish Director Terrie Sultan.

Skyfall * (PG-13) Bond. James Bond. He’s back (again). This time

around Sam Mendes (American Beauty) takes the helm, but Daniel Craig returns as Ian Fleming’s ever-so-suave super spy and Judi Dench reprises her role as M. You know the plot – Bond has to get to the bottom of some overly ambitious plan to destroy -- pick one: a) the universal b) the civilized world c) The Queen of England d) the British Secret Intelligence Service. It’s the 50th anniversary of the franchise, and Mendes has delivered one of the best yet. Don’t miss it. Also starring Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris as a particularly fetching Miss Moneypenny.

Now Playing Flight * (R ) It’s Oscar season,

and the studios are rolling out there contenders. This is the time of year, then, that you’ll usually find a new release starring Denzel Washington, a perennial contender. This is a good vehicle for Washington – he plays an airline pilot who crash lands a plane after a mid-air catastrophe and is hailed as a hero. Then the plot thickens. It’s a meaty role, and the director, Robert Zemeckis, (Cast Away) makes the most of his star. It’s a good one.

Chasing Mavericks (PG) Surfers and ocean watchers will love this inspirational bio of surfing phenom Jay Moriarity, played by newcomer Jonny Weston. Curtis Hanson (8 Mile) directs.

Cloud Atlas (R) This is a big-ticket movie that surely has major Oscar expectations. A tremendous cast led by Oscar magnet Tom Hanks, recruited by Larry (now Lana) and Andy Wachowski of Matrix fame. This project is another sojourn into a surreal world that jumps between past, present, and a future. But the intensity works against it, as does its length, nearly three hours. There is an emotional payoff at the end, but getting there isn’t as much fun as it should be. Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, and Halle Berry co-star.

The Southampton Social Club has been known as the go-to spot for the summer months in Southampton Village. Great news . . . It’s now open for the fall too. And they’re offering an all night, $25 prix-fixe. Designed as a prohibition style-1920s-speakeasy, the decor offers the perfect setting for a romantic evening, or a night out with friends. The French-American inspired menu by Executive Chef Scott Kampf, is exceptional.

Looking over the extensive cocktail menu, we decided to try the “lindy hop” a delicious concoction of belvedere vodka, fresh lemon, cranberry, orange juice, bitters, and simple syrup, served on the rocks.

For appetizers we tried the sesame encrusted Ahi tuna with a wakame seaweed salad, lotus chips, wasabi caviar, and a sweet soy reduction, which was a delicious combination of flavors. The jumbo lump crab cake, which was pan seared with Rhode Island lump crab, a dijon aioli and charred lemon, was also a big hit at the table.

For our entrees we decided on a fantastic dish of grilled sweet Thai tuna with an almond risotto and stir-

fry vegetables. Also, the half maple roasted chicken with cranberry and apple stuffing and haricot vert was a spectacular dish, filled with bold fall flavors.

Don’t leave without trying the dessert. Brooklyn’s famous Junior’s cheesecakes is deconstructed with macerated strawberries, and homemade whipped cream. The Tate’s chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches with french vanilla, chocolate fudge and caramel cream are also an great choice.

Specials go on through the week at the venue, along with the $25 prix-fixe. Happy hour takes place each night from 5 to 8 PM and

includes discounts on beer, wines by the glass and all specialty cocktails. International Cuisine Wednesdays offers diners a new specialty cuisine each week. Also offered on Wednesdays, 50 percent off of all wines by the bottle over $50. On Thursday the bar offers an all night long happy hour along with live entertainment, half price appetizers at the bar and drink specials. On

Friday there is live music and a late night happy hour from midnight to 4 AM. On Saturday there is a DJ and late night happy hour from midnight to 4 AM.
