Last year, the Forest City Area Historical Society was proud to become a part of it as well. A total of 47 area military personnel were honored at Memorial Day celebrations last year and the banners are displayed on the walls of the Historical Society Museum. The banners are made of vinyl and measure 24 inches x 48 inches, and bear the ser- vice man or woman’s name, rank, conflict and picture. Unlike most towns where the banners are hung out- doors and often succumb to the elements, the Forest City Area Historical Society dis- play their banners inside the museum. The donation for a ban- ner is $100 and Hometown Heroes is open to honor any person or family member who served during wartime. Deadline for application is March 31, 2017. Barbara Johnson Bevilac- qua, 75, of Silver Spring, Md., and formerly of RR Jermyn, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017, at home. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Rob- ert Bevilacqua. Born in Jermyn, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Bertha Juanita Cobb John- son. She had resided in the Maryland/District of Colum- bia area since 1960, and was a retired employee of the FBI. She is also survived by a daughter, Sally A. Moyle, of Factoryville; two grandsons, Dillon and Cody Moyle; her mother-in-law, Elizabeth S. Gamble; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Leslie H. Kretschmer, 98, of Honesdale, passed away Satur- day, Feb. 25, 2017, while a resi- dent at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center. Her husband, Paul Kretschmer, died March 24, 1979. Born in Johnsonburg, Pa., on May 22, 1918, she was the daughter of the late John and Mildred Westgate. She was raised in Honesdale and was a graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 1937. Clara was a seamstress, work- ing at Dale Sportswear and Kaꜩ Underwear factories in Hones- dale. Once retired, she spent her winters in Brooksville, Fla. Clara enjoyed quilting, sew- ing, crafts, making decorative cakes, berry picking and bingo. She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Penn State foot- ball and Orlando Magic basket- ball. Surviving are two children, Robert J. and wife, Susan; and Richard P. and wife, Dawn. She also leaves behind two nieces, Pay Strong, of Deposit, N.Y.; and Doris Hudson, of Ocala, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry, Walter, Mil- ton and Kenneth. During World War II and the Korean War, Clara endured her brother, Harry, at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese aacked; her brother, Milton, wounded in the Bale of the Bulge; and her husband, Paul, in the troop train wreck in Coshocton, Ohio, on his way to Korea. Ziomek, 75, of Sco Twp., died Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore, after a nine- month bale with pancreatic cancer. Bernard and his wife, the former Mary Ann Regis, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on Dec. 29, 2016. Born in Piston, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary Mancus Ziomek and he was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Visitation Church, Dickson City. He was educated at St. John the Baptist School and Piston High School class of 1958. He served with the Army and he was a member of Pennsylvania National Guard. His career in sporting goods began in 1964 with Jerry’s Sports Center (JSC Inc.) as Em- ployee #2. He rose through the ranks to vice chairman, work- ing 48 years for the company. During this time he built the business from a single location in Montdale, moving in 1988 to a large facility in Vandling. He acquired several busi- nesses including Boniꜩ Bros., Harrisburg, Pa.; N.E. Jerry’s Newington, Conn.; Simmons, Kansas City, Mo.; Outdoor Sports, Dayton, Ohio; Scran- ton Lace Co. and he was a partner in the Ramada Inn, Clarks Summit, Pa. He built Jerry’s Sports Center into the largest sporting goods distrib- utor in the country. He retired in 2009 to his Lake Wallenpau- pack summer home, joined by his family. Bernie hunted in many lo- cations including Colorado, Washington, Minnesota, East- ern Shore of Maryland and Anticosta. Bernie had many notable hunting friends, John Panaiere, Chuck Yeager, Bob McNeil, Lee Iacocca and Andy Maseyko as well as many other friends in the sporting goods industry. He was a life- time member of the NRA. Throughout his life he was a very kind and generous person supporting St. Fran- cis Assisi Kitchen, Scranton; St. Mary’s Visitation Church, Dickson City; Scranton Pre- paratory School and as well as other organizations. Ber- nie was a Corvee enthusiast who enjoyed his yearly fam- ily vacations to Sand Bridge, Va. He also enjoyed spending holidays with his family, but mostly he loved the time spent with his grandkids.He taught his grandkids how to stay humble, and most importantly to love family. He not only was there for them during their ac- complishments, but he also comforted us in our sorrows. When things got tough, grand- pa always told us, “When you fall down seven times you get up eight times.” St. Ignatius of Loyola said, “Go set the world on fire.” He believed that each one of his grandkids had a light inside of them. He knew that the grandchildren each had their separate gifts in life. Before he passed he told his four grandkids how unbeliev- ably proud of them he was and to continue chasing their dreams. The journey of life with grandpa was a wonder- ful one, and we know for sure it hasn’t ended. Surviving are two daugh- ters, Suzanne Hine and hus- band, Robert, Olyphant; and Paulee Meta and husband, Michael, Archbald; grand- children, Dr. Robert Hine Jr., Towanda; Ashley Hine, Oly- phant; Alec Meta, Rochester, N.Y.; and Celeste Meta, Arch- bald. He is also survived by Mary Ann’s many cousins. The funeral with military honors was held March 4 from the Frank T. Zyla, 88, of 22 White- tail Drive, Elysburg, PA, died Sat- urday, Jan. 14, 2016. He was born in Shamokin, Aug. 14,1928, a son of the late An- drjez and Anna (Kowalczyk) Zyla. Following graduation from Shamokin High School in 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 519th Military Police Baalion in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1947. He married the love of his life, Adeline (Mackel) Zyla, Nov. 11, 1950, in St. Stanislaus Church, Shamokin. Mr. and Mrs. Zyla were married for 66 years includ- ing many years with Ames Manu- facturing, Forest City. His career spanned 40 years in manufacturing. He lived in Clarks Green for 32 years before returning to Elysburg in 2000, to be close to his family and grandchildren. He was a member of Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Elysburg and held lifetime mem- berships at the Friendship Fire and Hose Co. and the St. Francis Home Association. In addition to his wife, Adeline, he is survived by his daughters, Linda Sowash and her husband, Mike, and Kathy Herridge and her husband, Stuart, both of Ca- tawissa; two grandchildren, Mat- tie Wahosky and her husband, Joe, and Michael Sowash Jr. He was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Peter, Joseph, Stanley and Michael, and a sister, Mary. Ed was the last member of the Zyla family. Nellie J. Mead Preston Park Nellie J. Mead, 85, of Preston Park, died on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017 at home after a short illness. She was born on January 20, 1932 in Sco Center, PA, the daughter of Floyd and Eliza (Hall- stead) Whitmore. Nellie married Ralph Mead on January 16, 1949 in East Ararat, PA, and he prede- ceased her on March 2, 1992. Nellie was a member of the Northern Wayne Ladies Sewing Group, Senior Citizen’s Group, and was active in the Northern Wayne Food Pantry. She was also a member of the Northern Wayne Fire Dept Aux- iliary. Surviving are four children, Nila (Ray) Rieman, Nora (Dale) Robbins, Nina Price, and Ronald (Bey) Mead, 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by 7 broth- ers, Jim, Edward, Dick, Howard, Jackie, David, and Donald Whit- more, 4 sisters, Jenny Dodge, Velma Baldwin, Vicky Bullis, and Marie Rowe, and many nieces and nephews. Nellie was predeceased by a son, Glenford Mead, son in law, Friꜩ Price, and 4 siblings, Helen Stone, John Whitmore, Ruth Rowe, and Lois Drake. Wayne County Food Pantry

The Wayne County Food Pantry Program announces the March 2017 schedule.

The Lakewood Area Pantry will be held at the Northern Wayne Family Health Center, 412 Como Rd., Lake Como, Pa 18437, from 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm, on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. For an emergency need call 798 - 2229.

In case of inclement weather, please call 253-4646 after 8:00 am, on your distribution day for an automated message. For information about how to reg-ister with a pantry, you should call 253 - 4262. Please bring large brown paper bags & plas-tic bags with you each month to recycle. Bring Campbell’s la-bels to distribute to schools. If you are unable to attend, you may ask someone to pick your food up for you. However, they must have your pantry card and a note/proxy giving them per-mission to pick up your food. Lent 2017Ascension &St. Katharine

The celebration of the sacra-ment of penance (with Expo-sition and benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament) at St. Katharine Drexel Parish and St. James Church on March 20 and April 3 - confessions from 6 to 7 p.m. and at Ascension Parish at St. Joseph Church on March 13 & 27 and April 10 confessions 6 to 7 p.m.

Stations of the Cross will be Fridays throughout lent at 4:30 p.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Parish at St. James Parish and 6 p.m. at Ascension Parish at St. Joseph Church.

Jerry ShafferCarbondale

Jerry Shaffer, 59, of Carbon-dale, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His wife is the former Mary Lynn Demia-novich. They were married for 38 years.

Born in Honesdale, son of the late William and Shirley Testa Shaffer, he was a loving husband, father and pop-pop.

Also surviving are a son, Stephen Shaffer, Carbondale; two daughters, Jennifer Shaf-fer, Carbondale; Faith Mul-hall and husband, Tim, Car-bondale; two grandchildren, Timothy and Myers Mulhall, Carbondale; a brother, Gary Shaffer and wife, Darlene, Carbondale; two sisters, Joann Shiffer, Moscow; and Linda Koch, Olyphant; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held March 3 in the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., Car-bondale, by the Rev. Donald Perry of the United Methodist Church. Cremation to follow.

Mary Ann QuinnUnion Dale

Mary Ann Quinn, of Union Dale, died Sunday, February 26, 2017 at home.

Born in Englewood, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ruth Cain Quinn. Prior to retirement, she was employed as secretary to the police chief in Tenafly, NJ.

Surviving is a nephew, Tim Quinn, Demarest, NJ.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers: William & John Quinn.

Graveside services were held Saturday, March 4 in Union Dale Cemetery. Ar-rangements by the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main Street, Forest City.
