Confidence in school comes from knowing and understanding what is happening within it. Our Vision for Ardleigh Green Junior School

Working Together, Learning Together and Growing Together

Imagine an Adventure Park for the mind that keeps on growing and improving. The park belongs to a community of people who are responsible, caring, considerate and committed to learning.

Notice how adults and children respect and value each other and how well they work together as a team. Notice how they relate positively with one another through their work, the problems they solve together and the hopes and dreams they have for the future. Marvel at the music, drama and artwork on display and be amazed at the talents of adults and children as they are encouraged to develop their abilities and achieve their personal best.

Feel the calm, purposeful atmosphere of the park and smile as you hear the children, happy and confident as they play, learn and achieve together. Notice the high expectations, the fun, laughter, the high standards of work and behaviour. Notice the awards received the special events and celebrations of achievement and the appreciation of visitors and the general public. Notice too the infectious enthusiasm, dedication and commitment of adults and children who are proud to be associated with the Adventure Park.

THE SCHOOL DAY

Punctuality is essential both in the morning and at lunchtime. We ask the co-operation of parents in ensuring that children are punctual and arrive at school before school sessions begin. This saves the children’s embarrassment and ensures that they do not miss the start of a lesson. Children should not arrive at school before 8.45am as there is not a member of staff on playground duty until that time. Children who go home to lunch should not return by 12.55pm. The school day is as follows: 8.55 - 9.00 - Registration 9.00 - 10.15 - Session 1 10.15 - 10.35 - Assembly/Collective Worship 10.35 - 10.55 - Break 10.55 - 12.00 - Session 2 12.00 - 1.00 - Lunchtime 1.00 - 1.05 - Registration 1.05 - 3.20 - Session 3 The total time spent in lessons every day is 4 hours and 40 minutes or 23 hours and 30 minutes every week.

Page 9: Ardleigh Green Junior School

Do you realise …….? Your child starts working as soon as they come into their classroom in the morning. If your child is just 5 minutes late every day, then they could be missing 25 minutes work in a week. Over a typical 6 week term, this would be 150 minutes – that’s 2½ hours learning time! In the course of a school year (38 weeks) this would rise to 950 minutes, or nearly 16 hours!! Please! Help your child – get them to school on time! Just imagine – if they are always 10 minutes late …. That could be nearly 32 hours

of missed learning – a rather sobering thought!

ATTENDANCE For children to gain the most out of school they need to attend regularly. We monitor each child's attendance very carefully and if the number of absences becomes too high then we will write to parents to advise them of the exact level of absence and attendance will be monitored by our Attendance, Behaviour & Traveller Support Service on a monthly basis. Children who achieve 100% attendance receive a certificate at the end of each term. If, for any reason your child is absent from school due to illness or an accident, it is essential that you notify the school by telephone as soon as possible. Please send a note of explanation with your child on his/her return to school (you do not need to ring daily). Children who do not have a valid reason for being absent from school will have the absence recorded as an unauthorised absence. A note of this will be made on the child's end of year report and pupil profile. Totals of authorised and unauthorised absences for the school are published annually. In line with statutory guidance holidays are not permitted during term time. The Local Authority are required to issue Penalty Notices (Fines) to each parent who fails to ensure their child’s regular attendance at school. From September 1st 2013 each parent will be required to pay £60 per child if payment is received within 21 days or £120 if paid after 21 days on each occasion that their child is taken on holiday during term time. If, for any reason, you need to take your child out of school during the day, would you please ensure that you, or someone nominated by you, collect your child; children will not be allowed out of school unaccompanied. The table below sets out the level of authorised and unauthorised absences for this school in the last academic year. The percentage of half days missed through authorised absence School

Learning for Life

If a child lives with criticism he learns to condemn.

If a child lives with hostility he learns to fight.

If a child lives with ridicule he learns to be shy.

If a child lives with shame he learns to feel guilty.

If a child lives with tolerance he learns to be patient.

If a child lives with encouragement he learns confidence.

If a child lives with praise he learns to appreciate.

If a child lives with fairness he learns justice.

If a child lives with security he learns faith.

If a child lives with approval he learns to like himself.

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship he learns to find love in the world.

CURRICULUM

The general principles which inform the curriculum are contained in the Education Reform Act. The Act also sets out certain key elements, which must figure in every pupil’s curriculum. These key elements include:

Religious Education for all pupils.

The National Curriculum for children of compulsory school age. The National Curriculum comprises: Core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science. Seven foundation subjects: History, Geography, Physical Education Technology, Art, French and Music. All children have access to Information Technology, which is used to support all aspects of the curriculum. In addition children are taught RE and PHSE (Personal Health & Social Education) in accordance with the Borough Agreed Syllabus. These subjects, together with Religious Education are not intended to be a complete curriculum and other aspects of study will include Personal Health and Social Education. Attainment targets set objectives for learning and programmes of study specify essential teaching within each subject area. Some of the attainment targets might well be taught as part of a topic, rather than as a separate subject. In developing schemes of work, whether for individual subjects or topics, the school will ensure that they are designed to fully meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. All our children are taught in their own peer groups - that is, where possible, with children of the same age. All children in the same year group cover the same topics and subjects, although the level of understanding that they reach and the number of tasks that they complete will vary depending on the ability of individual children. All classes have a daily Numeracy and Literacy lesson following the programmes of study as laid down in the national strategies. Specific details about our whole school curriculum is contained in a separate curriculum document which is issued to all new parents at our Autumn Term Parent Consultations.

LEARNING RESOURCES

Apart from the books and teaching materials which are common to all schools, we have developed extensive resources for all areas of the curriculum. We are fortunate to have a Computer Suite, a Music and Drama Studio a well-stocked Library, which our children access on a regular basis and three small group teaching areas. All classes have an Interactive Whiteboard and access to computers and iPads which are used extensively across the curriculum.

Page 14: Ardleigh Green Junior School

HEALTH AND SEX EDUCATION The school aims to provide a co-ordinated approach to health and sex education; and this forms an integral part of our curriculum. We believe it is important that children should be well prepared to meet the physical and emotional changes that occur in their lives. As a parent you have the right to withdraw your child from all or part of the sex education provided. If you wish to exercise this right you are asked to notify the Headteacher in writing. The Sex Education Policy, which has the full support of the Governing Body, is available for inspection in school.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND DISABILITIES Provision for SEND is overseen by the Special Needs Co-ordinator and the school Leadership Team. In addition to our SENCO, there are currently sixteen support assistants who work throughout the school and an additional teacher who works with individuals and small groups of children. In addition the school offers additional ‘Booster Classes’ for pupils in Years 5 and 6 who are not achieving national expectations in Numeracy and Literacy, together with 1:1 tuition for specific children in Year 6. In most instances support is given within the classroom alongside the class teacher, but on other occasions children are withdrawn from class in order to receive extra help. As a school we recognise that our more able children also have special educational needs. Provision for these children is overseen by a member of staff with specific responsibility for our more able children. Parents will of course be fully informed of any additional provision being made and be given the opportunity to commend their children who have specific talents. Provision currently includes involvement in a variety of extra-curricular clubs, differentiation within lessons an involvement in Havering’s enrichment programme and those of local secondary schools. Parents are informed if their children are on the Gifted and Talented register. If you have any complaint about the special educational provision we make for your child please speak to the Headteacher or to a member of the Governing Body. If you speak to a Governor he/she will, in the first instance, refer the matter to the Headteacher. The Headteacher will investigate and contact you within five school days. If he/she has not resolved the matter to your satisfaction it will be referred to the Governing Body who will consider the complaint at their next meeting and will contact you within five school days from the date of that meeting. The governor responsible for Special Educational Needs is Mrs Jacqui Davis.

ACCESS FOR THE DISABLED Ramps are provided for wheelchair access to various parts of the school. There are disabled toilets available for girls and boys. The school has a detailed accessibility plan which is discussed fully with the families to whom it applies.

Page 15: Ardleigh Green Junior School

HOMEWORK

In addition to regular reading, spelling and times table work, all classes have weekly Literacy and Numeracy homework tasks. In setting these tasks our aim is to:

Give the children a chance to work independently of the teachers and other pupils.

Complete, consolidate or extend work covered in school.

Encourage the discipline of private study.

Provide opportunities for parents/family to encourage and help their children with their studies.

Extend experiences and interests, using and developing initiative and various study skills.

Establish a pattern of working that will help the adjustment to secondary education.

Help the children to make the most of the chances and opportunities that arise in their day-to-day learning.

Parents are provided with their child's homework timetable at the autumn term parent consultation. Some homework activities require the use of a computer and internet access. Where such facilities are not available at home, provision is made at school to complete set tasks. Our school operates a Home/School reading programme and we would ask for your support in ensuring that your child reads regularly at home. Every child is given a reading record booklet, which has space for both parent and teacher comments. We encourage parents to add their comments as appropriate.

PASTORAL CARE

At school we are concerned with the whole child and not just his/her academic achievement; if your child is not happy at school or at home for example, it is unlikely that they will reach their full potential. For this reason each class teacher will be concerned about how your child is getting on with the other children and the adults about the school. If you have any concerns please contact the Headteacher or class teacher. Likewise if we Have any worries we will contact you to discuss the matter

Page 16: Ardleigh Green Junior School

PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION

We believe it is important to nurture all aspects of a child’s development and through our Personal, Social and Health programme; children are encouraged to look after and take responsibility for themselves and those around them. As part of developing their understanding of citizenship we have established a School Council. The council has two representatives from each class who meet regularly with appointed staff to discuss matters raised by class members. The school has been awarded the National Healthy Schools accreditation in recognition of its work in P.S.H.E.

CHILD PROTECTION

All staff at the school takes responsibility for promoting the welfare of the children in our care. The LA also requires that staff safeguard the welfare of the children by referring any serious concerns that they might have about any child to the Headteacher, who is the Child Protection Co-ordinator for the school. To help the staff to monitor the welfare of each child it is important that parents keep the school informed of any unusual or serious injuries that their child has suffered and of any changes that have occurred in the home circumstances, which might cause a child’s behaviour to change. Staff may, on occasion wish to speak to the parent to clarify a particular injury or to explain a change in a child’s behaviour. In those cases where staff has serious concerns about the welfare of a child, then the school has a duty to make a referral to the Social Services. If ever this happens, please remember that it is because the school has a responsibility to promote and safeguard the welfare of every child in our care. The ethos of the school is that control of pupils should be based on good personal/professional relationships between the staff and pupils. However, circumstances may arise in which staff has to use reasonable force to control or restrain pupils. Members of staff will only use reasonable force to control or restrain pupils when all other alternatives have been or cannot be tried. These alternatives are outlined in the school's policy on discipline and standards of behaviour.

Page 17: Ardleigh Green Junior School

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES At Ardleigh Green we value all individuals and the contribution they have to make. All individuals are entitled to respect and equality of opportunity regardless of race, culture, gender, religious beliefs, age, ability or appearance. Within our school community we all have a responsibility to provide a climate of equality and respect for all. Discrimination on the basis of race, gender, culture, religious beliefs, age, ability or appearance is not acceptable in our school. Discrimination affects everyone. All children, staff and governors will contribute towards a happy and caring environment by showing respect for and appreciation of each other as individuals. This is also an expectation of all visitors to the school. In addition to our policy for equal opportunities at Ardleigh Green the governors have also drawn up a policy for racial equality. Both documents can be viewed at school.

COLLECTIVE WORSHIP

Collective worship within the school is in accordance with the 1988 Education Act. All our children attend an act of worship at some time during the school day; this may be either as a whole school or in groups. The content of the majority of these acts of worship reflects the broad traditions of Christian belief. As parents, you have the right to withdraw your child from collective worship. If you wish to do so, you are asked to put your request in writing to the Headteacher. "The quality of acts of worship is always good and often outstanding. Pupils listen carefully and reflect

on stories which are extremely well told." Ofsted

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RE)

Religious education is taught in the school in accordance with the agreed syllabus adopted by the London Borough of Havering. The content of the syllabus reflects the fact that the religious traditions in this country are in the main Christian, account however is taken of the teaching and practices of other religions. The content is not based on the teaching of any particular Christian denomination. A copy of the agreed syllabus is available for inspection in the School Office. If you have any concerns about this aspect of the curriculum you are asked to talk to the Headteacher about them. As parents, you have the right to withdraw your child from RE lessons; if you wish to do so, would you please put your request in writing to the Headteacher.

Page 18: Ardleigh Green Junior School

RULES AND DISCIPLINE

We insist on high standards of behaviour in school and find that if children are happy and have a good attitude to learning there are rarely any problems. Pupils are expected to behave in a responsible manner and show respect for the people and their environment. At Ardleigh Green Junior School we always seek to promote good behaviour and we are justifiably proud of the behaviour of our children. At the start of the Autumn Term, the class teacher, together with their children agree a set of Rules, Rewards and Consequences, which form the basis of a Classroom Discipline Plan. All plans identify clear and consistent expectations, planned rewards for the children following the plan and consequences for the children breaking the rules. Classroom Discipline Plans are displayed prominently in all classrooms. We believe every child has a right to learn and no child has the right to disrupt the learning of others. Good behaviour is a necessary condition for effective teaching and learning to take place.

BULLYING

At Ardleigh Green Junior School we define bullying as:

"Any persistent behaviour which deliberately hurts, frightens or upsets another person. It therefore follows that bullying can be verbal or physical”

All our children are aware that as a school we do not tolerate any child making another child’s life unhappy, and they are encouraged to discuss any concerns or worries as it arises with an adult. On the rare occasions that bullying is reported, such reports are always taken seriously. Action is taken appropriate to the outcome of any investigation, and if after a reprimand and warning from the Headteacher bullying persists, parents of the children involved are informed. Sanctions include the loss of privileges, missing playtime, or being sent home for lunch. If despite the implementation of these sanctions bullying persists, then the child concerned will be excluded from school in accordance with the LA’s exclusion procedures. Our Behaviour and Discipline Policy ‘Don’t be a bully be a buddy’ written by children for children is issued to all new parents.

“Pupils attitudes and personal development are excellent and

Page 19: Ardleigh Green Junior School

make a positive contribution to the school. Behaviour is very good” Ofsted

CHARGING FOR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

The Education Reform Act 1988 states that the education provided during school hours must be free of charge. We therefore, may not charge for any activities, which take place during school hours, with the exception of instrumental music tuition. We can, however, charge for activities that take place wholly, or mainly, outside of school hours, as long as the activities are optional extras.

In order that activities can take place as in the past, we may invite parents and others to make voluntary contributions towards some aspects of the schools work e.g. visits, cooking ingredients etc. However, no pupil may be left out of an activity because his/her parent(s) are not able to or do not wish to make a contribution to such activities. In our school, the Governing Body considered the issue of charging in the Spring Term of 2005. At this meeting, the Governors decided that they would adopt Havering’s Charges Policy. This means that if the school organises a trip for a particular class, that takes place mostly during the school day, then parents will be asked to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of the trip; there is no compulsion but we are likely to say that unless all parents who wish their child to attend make a contribution, then it will not be possible for the trip to take place. All school journeys use coaches with seat belts.

EDUCATIONAL VISITS Year 3 Sikh Temple, Science Museum, Colchester Castle Year 4 Synagogue, Colchester Zoo and Natural History Museum Year 5 British Museum, Weald |Park and Duxford Year 6 Hever Castle, Thames Flood Barrier, River Study Centre and Sealyham Outdoor Activity Centre, Wales Theatre groups visit the school regularly to extend and enhance teaching and learning in all year groups. Personal Accident Insurance Parents should be aware that the local Education Authority does not provide personal accident insurance for school pupils. It is possible for parents to obtain this as an extension of normal household insurance.

Page 20: Ardleigh Green Junior School

Page 21: Ardleigh Green Junior School

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION If you intend to have your child’s ears pierced, please arrange for this to be done during the summer holidays NOT during term time. This will allow earrings to be removed for physical education and ensure that your child does not miss physical education. In accordance with the LA Health and Safety guidelines, children are not permitted to wear earrings for any physical education activity or to participate in supporting extra curricular activities.

Mobile phones are not permitted in school. BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS The school operates child care provision before and after school. HOME/SCHOOL LINKS

The school has a home school agreement which all parents are asked to sign before their child starts with the Junior School. The agreement underpins the home/school partnership which is fundamental to the success of the school. We feel that without a partnership and a real understanding between parents and teachers about the aims of education there might be a risk that children will not do as well as they might. At school we have tried to develop a number of ways in which these vital links can be made. A `Meet the Teacher’ evening is held early in the Autumn Term. This gives parents the chance to meet their child’s teacher and to sort out any settling in problems. Parents are also given a curriculum overview document which outlines the work to be covered throughout the year and more details regarding curriculum content on a termly basis. In the Spring Term there is an evening when you will have the opportunity to view and discuss your child’s work. Finally, in the Summer Term there is an Open Evening, where children’s work is shown and where various displays are performed. At the end of the summer term all children receive a detailed end of term report. During the Autumn Term Year 3 parents are invited to meet with their class teacher and Headteacher to discuss Reading, Mathematics and Science. Years 5 and 6 parents are invited to a meeting to discuss Secondary School allocation. Year 6 parents are invited to attend meetings to discuss our residential visit to Wales, Health Education and to explain end of Year 6 assessment arrangements. In addition to these meetings throughout the year there are regular opportunities for you to visit your child in school to discuss aspects of our school curriculum and any other matters that might affect the education of your child. All parents are encouraged to sign up for our Parentmail Service which allows us to keep you up to date regarding school activities through email and text.

Physical Education is delivered by our teachers supported by specialist coaches. Sports provided for in extra curricular clubs include athletics, gymnastics, netball, football, disco dancing, cricket, rounders, tag rugby, cheerleading, disco dancing and country dancing. PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS

Any parent wishing their child to participate in a public examination for a scholarship or entry to secondary school will have the school's permission, but needs to make direct contact to the schools concerned.

HOW TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE CURRICULUM

As a requirement of the Education Reform Act, the Borough has developed formal procedures, which specify how complaints about the curriculum and collective worship are to be handled. (These procedures are not concerned with complaints about the actions of individual members of staff, the Headteacher, or matters other than the curriculum and collective worship). When a complaint about such matters is made, it should be dealt with, in the first instance, through informal discussion with the Headteacher, as is the established practice in the school. In the rare instance when a matter cannot be resolved informally, the next stage is for it to be considered by the Governing Body as a formal complaint, if the complainant wishes to pursue the matter. A copy of the complaints procedure is available in the School Office.

KEY STAGE 2 TEST RESULTS At the end of Year Six all children are required to undertake national tests in Mathematics Grammar and Punctuation and Reading. Science and English are assessed by teachers and moderated by the Local Authority.
