LANGHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL As the School enters a new academic year it welcomes existing and new pupils. Miss Emrich, now in charge of Class 3, has exchanged with Mrs Deller (née Foster), who takes Class 4. The School celebrates the huge success of the annual 10km run on 7 September, when there were over five hundred 10km entrants and more than a hundred for the Fun Run. It was a great morning, raising lots of welcome money for the School. Thanks are due to Eve Oxley, Linda McAdam, the mums and all others who organised and supported the event. Over the summer building works have resulted in a new flat roof, a safer Class 2 entrance and an improved floor surface for Class 3. At 9.30 am on 21 October there is an Open Morning for the parents of prospective pupils of pre-school age.

RIDE & STRIDE 2014 A bright sunny day greeted the cyclists, horse-riders and walkers who took part in the 2014 Ride & Stride for the Friends of Essex Churches. There was an unusually large number of visitors to our two churches, where they were met by stewards and given very welcome refreshments
ARDLEIGH HALL A number of Boxted and Langham residents will have been patrons at some time or another of the Ardleigh Hall leisure and fitness centre. To the disappointment of many, it closed suddenly in August with little notice to members. With the closure several small but useful businesses ended or were obliged to move elsewhere. A group of former members and staff has now been formed to see if there is some way of reviving the facility. The group claims the support of Ardleigh Parish Council, Tendring District Council and Essex County Council. Anyone wishing to join the group or just wanting to find out more about its intentions and progress is invited to contact Ardleigh Parish Council by emailing

LANGHAM 100 CLUB Langham Community Council thanks all those who have supported the Community Centre through the 100 Club. The August draw (above) was the last one of the season and so those who would like to continue their support are asked to renew their tickets as soon as possible. The tickets are still £26 each and the draw is made monthly at the 100 Club Coffee Morning or at the Community Shop. To join for the first time or renew, please leave a cheque (payable to Langham Community Council at £26 for each ticket) at the Shop. All the proceeds from the 100 Club Draw go to the maintenance of the Community Centre.
BEAVER SCOUTS 2nd Langham Scouts are actively looking for another leader to help with their Beaver section, which meets at Langham Community Centre between 5 and 6.15 pm on Wednesdays in term time. No experience is necessary, just an interest in helping young children have fun and reach their potential at the start of their journey within the world-wide Scout movement. Volunteering within the community can be rewarding and fun. It also looks good on a CV and is a great way of meeting people. Please ring Jane Morton
07977 593232 for more information.
PANTOMIME IS COMING! Boxted Royal British Legion will be presenting “Cinderella” on 29 December in aid of the Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Details will be featured in future issues of the Newsletter.
BOXTED HISTORY GROUP The second summer walk was in Bishop’s Stortford, guided by Helen Gibson, who had previously spoken to the Group about timber-framed buildings. There is evidence of human occupation in the area from about 10,000BC but there is no record of any settlement until 1065, when the manor and estate of Stortford were sold to the Bishop of London: hence the “Bishop’s”. The walk began at the remains of a Norman castle and continued along the riverside to three maltings buildings, each larger than its predecessor and constructed in the materials and style of its time. Lunch was taken at the town museum, where, among the exhibits was a complete Roman skeleton in a stone coffin. The walk continued round the older town to view timber-framed buildings, most of them hiding behind modern developments, and concluded with a visit to 15th C St Michael’s church.
LANGHAM WI Last month’s talk on pub signs by Keith Lovell was funny and diverting and enjoyed greatly by everyone. The next meeting, (with refreshments) on 9 October at 7.30 pm is open to all to hear about photography (not gory) for the police and receive tips for better home photography. A good many entries for the photographic competition (see page 2) are hoped for; entry forms are also available at the Langham Community Shop. The visit to Helmingham Hall took place in lovely weather, while thirty members had seen “Grease” at the Mercury Theatre.
