April/May 2011 Newsletter From the President: Hello again fellow Mississippi Corvette Club members and Corvette enthusiasts. The month of March as always was a pretty slow month for our club due to all the expected cold and rainy weather that is not conducive for outings. Everything started to pick up beginning in April now that the weather is a little more reliable. During the month of April we had two Poker Runs. The first was the Trail of Honor Poker Run on April 2 and our MSCC Spring Red Bluff Poker Run on April 16. Both were great events and supported great charitable causes. Everyone had a great time at both events. Bill Franks was the big winner at the Trail of Honor Poker run and Laura Wilson had the best hand while Ralph Shurtleff had the low hand at the MSCC Red Bluff Poker Run. Thanks folks for donating your winnings to the supported charities. As usual Jerry Ainsworth set up another great ride through the country covering about 70 miles with the proceeds from the event going to the Mustard Seed. If you missed either event you missed a great time filled with driving, food, fun and great Corvette fellowship. Our club continues to grow as we have gained nine new members since our last club meeting. It is always great to meet new people who share the same love for their Corvettes as we all do. Corvettes just seem to bring great people together. Our tag bill has been approved by the legislature and we are anxiously waiting for it to be signed into law by the Governor. Tom Gerity is tracking it constantly. We have now started selling the 300 required tags so submit your application and reserve yours now. It has been posted on our web site. Beverly Franks has published the official membership as of March 31 and will be putting it on the web site. If you have forgotten to send your dues in, do so now so she can get you on the official membership roster. We will be changing the web site password once the official membership is posted. The new password will be emailed to the membership once the final membership roster is posted. April/May 2011 Newsletter

From the President:

Hello again fellow Mississippi Corvette Club members and Corvette enthusiasts.

The month of March as always was a pretty slow month for our club due to all the expected cold

and rainy weather that is not conducive for outings. Everything started to pick up beginning in

April now that the weather is a little more reliable.

During the month of April we had two Poker Runs. The first was the Trail of Honor Poker Run

on April 2 and our MSCC Spring Red Bluff Poker Run on April 16. Both were great events and

supported great charitable causes. Everyone had a great time at both events. Bill Franks was

the big winner at the Trail of Honor Poker run and Laura Wilson had the best hand while Ralph

Shurtleff had the low hand at the MSCC Red Bluff Poker Run. Thanks folks for donating your

winnings to the supported charities. As usual Jerry Ainsworth set up another great ride through

the country covering about 70 miles with the proceeds from the event going to the Mustard

Seed. If you missed either event you missed a great time filled with driving, food, fun and great

Corvette fellowship.

Our club continues to grow as we have gained nine new members since our last club meeting.

It is always great to meet new people who share the same love for their Corvettes as we all do.

Corvettes just seem to bring great people together.

Our tag bill has been approved by the legislature and we are anxiously waiting for it to be signed

into law by the Governor. Tom Gerity is tracking it constantly. We have now started selling the

300 required tags so submit your application and reserve yours now. It has been posted on our

web site.

Beverly Franks has published the official membership as of March 31 and will be putting it on

the web site. If you have forgotten to send your dues in, do so now so she can get you on the

official membership roster. We will be changing the web site password once the official

membership is posted. The new password will be emailed to the membership once the final

membership roster is posted.

Harley-Davidson Trail of Honor Poker Run

Several members of our club participated in the Harley-Davidson Trail of Honor Poker Run, which was held on Saturday, April 2. Approximately 20 MSCC members and guests participated in the run. Our own, Bill Franks, won lst place for the best poker hand. The route included five stops, including the Veteran’s Home. Riders had a chance to visit with some of the residents of the home, who enjoyed the fellowship and the viewing of the cars and motorcycles. After our four stops, riders headed back to the Harley shop, where they were served Tony Chachere’s chicken and sausage jambalaya and green salad. The outing was perfect in all ways-weather, fellowship, and food!!

The Mississippi Corvette Club Spring Poker Run

April 16, 2011 The MS Corvette Club participated in their Spring Poker Run on Saturday, April 16, 2011 with

twelve (12) beautiful cars and 21 beautiful people:

Jerry and Jerry Lee Ainsworth Kirby and Janie Wilson Freddie and Mary Jones David and Laura Wilson Bill and Joan McNease Ralph and Sue Beth Shurtleff Tom and Pam Gerity Ed Robinson and Lesley Loyd Mike and Christopher Bush Linda Henslee Rick Holmes Tonya Demming (perspective member) Our charity for this run was the Mustard Seed program. The Mustard Seed seeks to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual needs of adults with developmental disabilities by providing a loving and protected Christian community and meaningful activities that allow the participants to fulfill the potential that God has created within them. Joan McNease, our own member, is a volunteer for Mustard Seed. Joan teaches knitting to the adults. Visit their website for more amazing information.

www.mustardseedinc.org/contact.html Registration began at Skinner’s Chevrolet Dealership in Terry, MS. After the first card draw, we drove south to Crystal Springs where we stopped at Lake Chautauqua Park for the second card draw. A beautiful, calm and peaceful place. Check them out on their website: http://www.crystalspringsmiss.com/pages/chautauquapark.html The third draw was in Georgetown, and I’m not sure if the location had a name, didn’t linger long. The fourth draw was in Monticello at a service station. This was the potty stop too.

As we traveled to the fifth stop, we were able to enjoy all of the wonderful curves. I believe Jerry said someone called the curves, the “Tail of the Lizard”, much like the “Tail of the Dragon” in Tennessee. Both of them are perfect for Corvetting.

Page 9: April/May 2011 Newsletter - MS Corvette Club · April/May 2011 Newsletter From the President: Hello again fellow Mississippi Corvette Club members and Corvette enthusiasts. The month

As we neared the Bluff, the sign indicated “road out”, due to a wash out. We turned around, lined up the Corvettes and walked to the bluff. I’m not sure which was the most beautiful, the Bluff or the Vettes. Most would say the Vettes.

The view at Red Bluff, which is also referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Mississippi”, is a gorgeous sight. Red Bluff was the fifth and final card draw with Laura Wilson winning the “Best Hand” and Ralph Shurtleff winning the “Worst Hand” and both of them donated their winnings to Mustard Seed making a total of $260.00.

The nice folks at Skinner’s Chevrolet Dealership donated two (2) $50.00 gift certificates for automotive service, won by Lesley Loyd, and our cruise captain, Jerry Ainsworth. Congrats, to you both.

We headed back home via the Whistlestop Café in Monticello for lunch. Now listen, the food was good, once we got served, but getting served was the problem. They ran out of food. Some had to leave early due to other commitments and did not get their food. I think the staff was overwhelmed by the number of folks to feed, even though they had been notified. But, I will say they had some of the best fried okra I have eaten in a while.

It was a wonderful day of fun and fellowship. A special “thank you” to Jerry Ainsworth for planning this event. It was terrific route and ride. Good job, Jerry.

Can't verify if this article is accurate because I don't work in the petroleum industry, but

might be worth looking into.........

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are paying up to $3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. My line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon: Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.. One day is diesel, the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Page 12: April/May 2011 Newsletter - MS Corvette Club · April/May 2011 Newsletter From the President: Hello again fellow Mississippi Corvette Club members and Corvette enthusiasts. The month

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode , thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money. One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL . The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount. Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up ; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Corvette Tag

I am happy to report that Governor Barbour signed our tag bill into law on April 26, 2010. It's now official; we can have a special Corvette tag if we can sell at least 300 tags at $31.00 each. The earliest possible printing will be in January, 2012. The $31 tag fee will be in addition to the taxes you already pay, so when you renew your tag the next time after getting a corvette tag, you will pay another $31 in addition to the regular taxes. The National Corvette Museum will receive $24 from each tag sold each year. The State keeps the balance of the $31 fee. Membership in the Club and in the Museum is not required. Anyone desiring to buy a tag for more than one vehicle will need to submit a separate application for each vehicle. We hope to have information about the tag on the Club's website soon. Once we have information about the tag up on the website, the Museum is going to start publicizing the tags. The Museum's first effort will be to send out a postcard like the proof attached to this e-mail to owners on the list of registrations we bought from the Tax Commission about a year ago. There will also be information about the tag on the Museum's website. Additional publicity efforts

are less definite, but I have seen discussions about notifying Mississippi news organizations and placing ads in automotive publications. We can now sell tags legally. Please tell any non-club member Corvette owners you know about the tags and give them an application.
