The month of April starts quickly with a “Stir Fry” themed dinner offering on Friday the 1st. On April 8th we welcome the Junior Cotillion participants to the Club in conjunc-tion with our Family Italian night.

“Coastal Motion” makes their debut at NYCC on Saturday the 9th. If you can’t enjoy dinner at the Club that night with all the activities in town, plan on stopping by later in the evening with friends and enjoying the band.

The Children’s Easter party and Egg Hunt are planned for Sunday, April 17th. Please don’t forget to bring your basket and a few canned goods for the local food bank.

Other events to note this month are the Yachting Divisions Spring dinner on Thurs-day the 14th and the Club’s annual Easter buffet on the 24th. We hope you are able to join us at the Club.

Unfortunately, we are losing two exceptional employees in early April. Megan Denney our Fitness Co Director is making a career change

As I write this, the world is watching Japan as it struggles to avoid nuclear disaster, the Middle East is still in turmoil and financial markets have reacted with huge losses.

Closer to home, basketball brackets are being completed for March Madness, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are being planned and Elton John is coming to town on Friday. It is hard to reconcile these events, except to realize that despite world tragedies, life goes on. We can be thankful for all that we have and hope that our donations will make a difference to those in need. With spring, there is renewal and a hope of good things ahead.

I would like to thank the Princess Anne Country Club for hosting the “Quintessential Quad Party,” which was a party for members of the Bayville, Cavalier, Norfolk Yacht and

Princess Anne clubs. You should make plans to attend the next multi-club event. Here at NYCC, we are planning a number of events for the coming months. The Yachting Division will have its annual spring Yachting dinner on April 14 and all members are invited to participate. On April 24, we will have the chef ’s renowned Easter buffet. Make your reservations early. In May, we will be hosting a weekend National High School Sailing event featuring the best teams from across the country. The following weekend, the pool will officially open with many Memorial Day weekend festivities.

Summer is just around the corner. Please come out and take advantage of the many opportunities our club has to offer. I hope to see you there.

Respectfully Submitted,John Deal

around the ClubNorfolk Garden Tour

Has NYCC FlavorThe homes of three NYCC couples will play starring roles on the Norfolk Garden Tour, Thursday, April 21, in the Hague neighborhood in historic Ghent.

The Norfolk Tour, part of the 78th Historic Garden Week in Virginia and billed as “America’s Largest Open House,” is a project of The Garden Club of Norfolk and Harborfront Garden Club.

It will feature Martha and Brook Smith’s Colonial Revival style home at 502 Mowbray Arch that has been redone to create “a modern flair.”

Tour goers can stroll through Dr. Sally Clarkson and Dr. John Herre’s post-Victorian brick home at 517 Pembroke Avenue that has been restored to its original appearance.

Then, it’s a short walk to Anne and Mike Cummings’ Georgian Revival at 550 Pembroke Avenue, described as “formal but family friendly.”

Five homes, one garden and The Williams School will all be open to tour. Many NYCC members will make the tour a success with their beautiful flower arrangements, cheerful hostessing, and careful organizing. This year, all four co-chairs are also NYCC members: Jane Cole and Christine Neikirk from the Garden Club of Norfolk and Hannah Brewer and Beth Williams from Harborfront Garden Club.

For more info, contact Christine Neikirk at 478-3836 or go to www.norfolkgardentour.org

A Tale of Two TrainersWelcome Sarah Kelsey and Nick Lynch

Sarah Kelsey and Nick Lynch are our two newest personal trainers.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Sarah grew up dreaming about performing as a mezzo soprano at the Metropolitan Opera.

In 2006, Sarah came to Hampton Roads to perform with the Virginia Opera. (If you want to check out Sarah’s pipes, go to www. sarahkelsey.com.)

She met Joshua Kelsey, a Navy photographer who was on a freelance assignment to do a shoot on “The Day in Life of Opera Singer.”Hello, Josh. Goodbye (eventually) promising music career.

“It was ‘almost’ love at first sight,” said Sarah. “And I realized that the travel and commitment to pursue a full-time career as a singer wasn’t conducive to a marriage.”

Sarah, who had enlisted the service of a personal trainer to help her get in shape for singing roles, decided to pursue her second passion – fitness.

“I never was an athlete growing up,” said Sarah, who has a master’s from the New England Conservatory of Music. “But when I started working out, I fell in love with it and have found another career.”

Unlike Sarah, Nick was an athlete most of his life. He grew up in Northern Virginia, playing

“whatever sport was in season,” basketball, soccer, lacrosse, baseball. At Christopher Newport University, where Nick graduated with a degree in English, he lettered in lacrosse.

“Everyone in my family is sports oriented,” said Nick. “They all work out. But I am the only one you’d call a fitness nut.”

Both hold certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

They will work one-on-one with clients. Sarah, a certified yoga instructor, also teaches a Thursday morning yoga class.

“I started taking yoga to reduce the stress of performing,” said Sarah, who has sung with the Boston Pops among other well known symphonies and opera companies.

Nick will be working with our young lacrosse players, helping them with conditioning and fundamentals. See page 7 for more information on the clinic!

Sarah and Josh, who deploys on assignments with the Navy Special Forces, live in Meadowbrook with Ruby, their mixed beagle. Nick, 23, who is single for now, lives in Norfolk.

Welcome aboard.

Greatest Generation Subject for Page

TurnersThe Page Turners turn back the clock to the 1940s, when NYCC’s book club discusses Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand at its Friday, April 15 meeting. Hillenbrand is also the author of Seabiscuit: An American Legend. Page Turner members and those interested in joining are invited to dinner in the Men’s Grill at 6 p.m. The discussion follows. For more info, contact [email protected].

Retirement a la King

The annual Spring Yachting Dinner is April 14. You don’t have to own a boat to come. Everyone is welcome – even land lubbers.

All yachting members are asked to bring a guest to enjoy the

evening. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m. Entree choices are

between sliced tenderloin of beef and salmon. For more information or to make reservations, call the

Club at 423-4500.

If anyone thinks Will King is sleeping in since retiring as Headmaster at Norfolk Collegiate School two years ago, guess again.

On a recent morning, Will was at the Fitness Center waiting for the doors to open at 5 a.m., so he could get in a workout on the rowing machine and stationary bike.

Then he was off to his job as Executive Director of the Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation, which operates and owns the Schooner Virginia.

In addition, Will, 71, is Chairman of the Board of Horizons Hampton Roads, a

six-week summer enrichment program for Hampton Roads public school students from Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth. He also is on the board of the Chesapeake Bay Authority of Independent Schools and donates his time to other worthy causes.

“I’m usually up between 3 or 4 in the morning and I’m not a guy to sit around,” he said. “I don’t golf or own a boat or do woodwork, so this is how I keep busy. By the time I get home at night, I’ve about had it.”

Will settled in Norfolk after a 22-year career in the Navy, retiring as a captain. He became involved in Norfolk Collegiate School first as a parent, then serving on the board of trustees, before his 20 years as headmaster.

“It was a great place to work,” he said. “I loved what I did and I miss the people, but it wasn’t hard to leave. I felt I held the job as long as I should have.”

A much beloved figure, his roots at Collegiate still run deep. Three of his grandchildren attend Collegiate and you can usually find him working out in an “‘NC’ T-shirt. “I think I have a few hundred of them.”

When Will first retired, he was involved with

even more organizations.

“Actually, I’ve been shedding things,” he said, laughing. “I was doing too many things.”

As the head of Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation, Will’s main goal is to get Schooner Virginia back in the water after funding cuts have run her aground.

“We’re trying to build a partnership with businesses so we can resume operations. It’s a big challenge. I don’t know when we will get back operating, but we are getting there.”

Will and Cecelia have been married 45 years and raised three daughters, all proud Norfolk Collegiate grads. The Kings live in the Larchmont area of Norfolk.

A fierce Cavalier fan, Will is looking forward to attending his 50th University of Virginia class reunion.

What’s he do in his spare time?

“There isn’t much of that,” he said.

But when there is, you can usually find him at one of his seven grandchildrens’ music or sporting events.

The winds have shifted from north arctic blasts to the temperate southwest. But don’t be fooled. They can be very strong with gusts up to 50 miles-an-hour.

Please make sure to check all lines and make sure they can meet such winds. While Harbormaster Dino Kunic does a great job of protecting our marina, it is a boat owner’s responsibility to be sure their boat is secure.

Beware of April Winds

The Keelboat Spring Racing Series gets underway Friday evening, April 22. It continues at 6 p.m. every Friday through June 3. The Yachting Committee hopes to attract a record number of entrants. The racing is fun and so is the post party at the Dock House.

If you are not a boat owner, but would like to participate as a crew member or as a Race Committee member, contact Dick Waters, Fleet Captain, Sail, or any member of the committee.

Showdown at Sundown

Free Boat ExamsThe U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering boat examination at no charge. Vessel examiners will be on the piers April 30, beginning at 10 a.m.

Don’t miss this opportunity to assure that your boat meets all federal and state safety requirements. If your boat does meet all requirements, you will be informed what needs to be fixed and no report will be filed. If you pass, you will receive a coveted decal to affix to your boat that will spare you being stopped for a routine inspection when on the water.

Please contact Norman Mason at [email protected] if you want an inspection. We will attempt to schedule exams in the order we receive them.

To find out if your boat is up to speed safety-wise, go to www.safetyseal.net or www.cgaux.org and “inspect” your boat online.

Summer Camp is Right Around the CornerWhat Class Is For My Child?

Beginner Optimist Sailing Ages 8-10

This program is designed for children who have never set foot in a boat. It will focus on basic/introductory sailing and water safety skills. The children will learn the different parts of the boat, how to rig and de-rig the boats and, of course, how to sail. It is limited to 24 participants and will include three instructors, as required to meet US Sailing instructional guidelines.

Intermediate/Advanced Optimist and Sloop Sailing

Ages 12 and Up

This program is for kids who have sailed before, but are still uncomfortable in a boat. The program is designed to raise the kids’ comfort level, and fine tune their skills with additional water activities that allow for spirited fun that enhances the learning experience. It is meant for sailors who have mastered the beginner course or who are over the age of 12.

An intrepid group of club members and staff are hoping to take their fitness level to a new high. All the way to the top of Dominion Tower’s 25 stories.

They are participating in Step Up for the Up Center: Race to the Top of Dominion Tower. The April 3 event benefits the Up Center, which provides services and homes for the needy of Hampton Roads.

“I’m no athlete, just a mom of two (Sabrina, 4, and Benji, 2) trying to stay in shape,” said Alexis Casagrande, one of the club’s climbers. Like several others, Alexis got “roped into” the event by personal trainer Rob Ballon as a way of keeping his clients motivated.

In addition to Rob, other Ballon clients making the climb are Kathy Burnett, Jessica Chesson and Jamie Keogh. Among others planning to compete are trainer Patrick Tennis and NYCC members, Andy McCraw and Dia DuVernet, who is the Up Center’s executive vice-president.

Michele Hessel, NYCC’s Food and Beverage Manager, is making her second climb up Dominion Tower. Last year, Michele did 50 flights, in addition to raising more than $700.

Contestants can choose to climb 25, 50 or 100 flights. This year, she hopes to double her pleasure and go for the Big 100 and raise $1,000.

“It’s a lot of fun, but it is a really challenging workout,” said Michele, who has been getting in shape climbing the stairs at the Armada Hoffler Building and hopes to make a good showing.

Casagrande’s goal is a bit more modest.“I’m just hoping to make it to the top of 25 flights (that’s 580 steps, if you’re counting),” said Alexis, who has been pounding the stairs and doing plenty of leg exercises.

We’ve got high hopes for all of you.

Lacrosse WorkshopNew to the personal training staff at the Fitness Center, Nick Lynch, a former college lacrosse letter winner, brings his specialty to NYCC with a pair of one-hour clinics, Sunday, April 10.

Would-be lacrosse stars will work on increasing quickness and learn the secrets to developing short burst top end speed.

All levels are welcome. The clinic for ages 12-14 is 1-2 p.m. and for ages 15-17 will be 2-3 p.m. Sign up at the Fitness Center Front Desk.

TRX is Coming

Child Care

The second swim clinic for Sea Dragon team members and those planning to try out will take place April 3-17 on Thursdays and Sundays. This is a great opportunity for our young swimmers to get in tip-top shape for the fast approaching season. Those attending must be comfortable completing one length of the pool in both freestyle and backstroke.

Swim team packets will be available in April, so watch for further information regarding the upcoming season!

But what is it? TRX, or “suspension training” as it is also called, is one of the fastest growing and popular trends in fitness. TRX works against your body weight and gravity to built strength, balance, flexibility and core stability.

First used by Navy Seals and later developed by Fitness Anywhere, TRX is a leveraged body weight exercise.

The Fitness Center will soon offer instructional classes for those who want to learn the system and integrate it into their own work outs. We will also be adding TRX classes to our Group Exercise schedule. Watch for upcoming announcements.

Join us on Wednesdays and Thursdays during April for Spring and Easter Arts and Crafts.
