Hope everybody enjoyed the Annual Meeting and party. The evening was a true display of our club and a great event. For the members

that missed the party, please put it on your calendar for next year. Jim and the staff did an outstanding job, the food was excellent and the party is an event not to be missed.

The Fitness Center is still abuzz from all of the New Year’s resolutions. Classes are well attended and the workout floor is still full of a lot of enthusiasm. The indoor pool is a nice warm place to be, on these cold winter days.

The tennis courts remain busy. We have been lucky with the weather so far, the tennis courts are still playable as of late January and on colder days, the clinics and lessons have moved inside to the fitness center squash courts and other workout areas. The men’s and women’s groups are enjoying the limited warmer weather and braving the colder days.

The Entertainment Committee and the Club staff have planned a few nice events throughout the month. Early in the month, a Winter Blues Party is planned for February

During February some fun events have been planned to help with the Winter Blues. On the 8th Lewis McGehee will perform in a dinner club atmosphere in the Main Dining room with a special menu offering. Please make your reservations early as seating is limited. We will also offer a Tapas Night in the Lafayette room with the Ocean Breeze band on the 22nd. Valentines Night the club will have two separate offerings with a limited menu in the Main Dining room with entertainment from pianist Jennifer Gammill. A family dinner buffet will be offered in the Deck. On Sunday the 10th the tennis committee will help stage the first Super Bowl of table tennis in the ballroom. We hope to get a big sign up for this fun event.

rester are to be commended and thanked for their service to the Club.

At the Annual Meeting Sharon Busick and Mary Sorensen were recognized with the “Distinguished Service Award” for their service to the membership. Sharon has worked in the Deck restaurant for 20 years and Mary in the pantry for 25 serving our members and guests.

Finally, I would like to thank Jennifer Hol-zhausen for her outstanding service as the Club’s Fitness Director. She and her husband will be relocating to Germany this spring. Jen-nifer will be missed and we wish her success in her future endeavours.

8th. Come and enjoy the selected menu, music and sun set views from the main dining room.

Jim and the staff have taken all the worries out of Valentine’s Day. If you are planning a family Valentine Day night out - enjoy the buffet in the Deck. For a more quiet and romantic setting, the main dining room and a special menu have been prepared. Why bother with downtown, enjoy the easy parking, great food and perfect setting for a memorable valentine evening with someone special.

Toward the end of the month, my favorite event is planned - the early evening tapas night. The tapas nights started last fall after the TGIFs at the pool wrapped up. Our chefs had a good time preparing new and tasty treats. There is no better event to enjoy the true beauty of the club; the open air of the Main bar/Lafayette Room, the outside terrace and the wide river views and perfect sun sets. Add great food, some entertainment, close friends and cheer, equals a fun night and great way to unwind from a week full of stress.

Enjoy the month, and spring is just around the corner.

Respectfully Submitted,Billy Dashiell

around the ClubHe Live in a House Full of Glass

One thing the McKinnons never have to worry about when entertaining. That’s having enough glasses.

They might have the largest collection in Norfolk this side of the Chrysler Museum, where Colin spends 10-15 hours per week at the museum’s Glass Studio pursuing his hobby.

“We’ve got a cabinet full of glasses, and vases,” said Colin McKinnon, who took up glassblowing three years ago.

There’d be a lot less glass in the house if he ever decided to sell any of his creations, especially the large, colored vases he turns out.

“I get so attached to the pieces I can’t let them go,” he said with a laugh.

McKinnon, who runs his own commercial real estate business, Summer Land, got interested in glass blowing about 15 years ago after seeing a contemporary glass exhibit and being smitten by “all the creative things you can do with the material.”

But it wasn’t until 2009 that he signed up for Glass I at Tidewater Community College.

“In business I had been using the left side of my brain,” he said. “I decided it was time to get back to using my right brain. It was kind of foreign at first, there’s a lot of skills to learn, but I was addicted. I couldn’t wait to take the next class.”

With the encouragement of friend Kelly Conway, who happens to be the Curator of Glass at the Chrysler Museum, Colin started glassblowing at TCC, then continued at the Chrysler when the museum opened a full-scale glass studio about a year ago. He divides his time between his own projects and assisting others. He and his daughter,

Kris, often team up on a project. Colin and Patt, his wife of 32 years, also have a son, Sandy.

The process starts with creating molten glass from sand, or silica, in a furnace that reaches a temperature of 2,150 degrees F.

“Then comes the gathering phase,” said Colin. “You get a small amount on a rod or pipe. You’ve got to constantly twirl the rod to keep the glass from falling off while you are shaping it.”

Then comes “flashing,” or reheating the glass by sticking it back into a reheating chamber called a glory hole, and adding more glass to enlarge the piece.

The process is repeated over and over during the shaping phase and then whisked into a kiln for the cooling off phase.

“It’s pretty labor intensive and there can be a lot of teamwork involved with others helping you,” said Colin. “It can take hours and hours to make a piece and sometimes it just doesn’t turn out. That’s the nature of it.”But when it does turn out?

“It’s a great feeling,” said Colin. “It’s like it’s your birthday.”

Free glassblowing demonstrations open to the public are held Wednesday through Sunday at noon at the Chrysler Glass Studio on Duke Street, just across the street from the museum.

Back by popular demand, we will be offering a Friday night tapas menu with entertainment from 6:30-10 p.m. The

Ocean Breeze Band is a versatile band that incorporates the best of all the

music worlds!

nYCC newSNew Board Member Robin Kesler

In her 20 years as a Club member, Robin Kesler had never been on so much as one committee. Then one night the

phone rang.

“It was Club President Billy Dashiell asking me if I’d be on the Board of Governors,” said Robin who was elected at last month’s Annual Meeting. “It was, to say the least, a complete surprise. It was something I had never thought about.”

While Kesler might be new to office-holding at the Club, her unlimited energy, ability to network with members she has known for years and her business background as a retail pharmacist for 13 years make it easy to see why Dashiell tapped her. Kesler joins the Board along with Jim Forrester, former Commodore.

“I hope I can make a contribution. It’s a great way for me to give back something to the Club for all the great years I’ve had here. It’s been such a big part of my life.”

Robin met her husband, Robert, whose parents were members, at the Club. It’s where they had their wedding reception. And it’s where you can find her six days a week working out at the Fitness Center. She has recently joined a Mah Jong group.

Avid boaters, over the years the Keslers have had five different boats tied up at the Club. Their current boat is “Azura.”

“We live at the Club during the summers,” she said.

A graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, Kesler says her approach to the position will be one of using common sense and “continuing the excellent leadership we have had over the years.”

“I will be doing a lot of listening at first,” she said. “These have been some hard economic times and I think it is very important that we make the Club the very best value it can be for members.”

The Keslers live in Lochhaven. Robert is vice-president of taxation at Norfolk Southern. Their son, Bobby, is working on his doctorate in math at Cornell.

“I’m not sure what I have gotten myself into,” said Robin with a laugh. “But I guess I will find out. I am looking forward to it.”

Page Turners Turn to India

The Page Turners will discuss “Behind the Beautiful Forevers” at its monthly get together, Friday, Feb. 1.

Written by Pulitzer prize-winner Katherine Boo, the non-fiction work takes readers inside the world of present-day Annawadi, a slum of Mumbai, India. It follows the lives of several residents, focusing on a young trash picker, a female “slumlord” and a college student.

The group meets at 6 p.m. in The Grille.

Dance the Night Away

Carlyn and Guy St. John return for their 13th year of teaching ballroom dancing, beginning Thursday, Feb.7, from 7-9 p.m.

Over the eight sessions, you’ll learn all the basics of cha-cha, rumba, tango, waltz, swing and meringue.

Carlyn has been teaching dance for more than 40 years and operated a dance studio for 24 years. Husband Guy is her dance partner.

The low-key, fun evening includes wine and champagne breaks. Cost is $395 per couple. For more information or to sign up, call the Club at 423-4500 or the St. John’s at 494-3574.

Rachel Austin and Jaclyn Hollander are our 2013 Junior Sailing Summer Coaches.

Rachel will serve as Program Director and Jaclyn as racing coach. Both come to us from Old Dominion University’s excellent sailing program, which has won many national championships.

Rachel, an Ohio native, has previously taught at a “Learning to Sail’ summer program in Sandusky, Ohio.

A rising junior majoring in early childhood education, Rachel placed sixth at the MAISA Women’s Fall B Division race.

She counts as one of her heroes Anna Tunnicliffe, Olympic gold medalist and former NYCC sailing instructor. Rachel’s “land hobbies” include running and snowboarding. She hopes to sail to the Greek Isles one day.Jaclyn’s goal is to represent the U.S. and continue ODU’s string of Olympic sailors.

A Californian, Jaclyn is a sophomore majoring in computer graphic design. She earned her sailing certification as an instructor at Westlake Yacht Club.

She was an all-around athlete in high school, playing soccer,

lacrosse and softball. At ODU, she took third place in the MAISA Open B Division Race and 15th at the Rose Bowl Regatta B Division Race.

Welcome, aboard.

Ahoy!

Calm, unflappable, reasoned and a pretty darn good sailor in a storm.

Just call him “Mr. Cool.” That’s our new Commodore, Carl Bryant.

The Chief Financial Officer at a division of General Dynamics and formerly the Chief Operating Officer of a firm in the pleasure boat industry, Carl brings a wealth of both business and practical experience to the position.

Most importantly, he brings a love of the water.

“When you are on the water, you’re one with nature,” said Carl during an interview aboard Gambei, his 42-foot trawler. “It’s very humbling matching wits with nature, but very satisfying.”

Carl and Sue, his wife of 42 years, joined the Club soon after moving here 10 years and several boats ago. Before being sworn in as Commodore at January’s Annual Meeting, he was Fleet Captain-Sail and Vice Commodore.

The yachting community could not be in better hands, said predecessor Jim Forrester.“Carl is a sailor and yachtsman,” said Forrester. “He is hard working, a great problem solver and a team player. He’ll work

New Commodore is One “Cool” Guywell with the Board of Governors in helping guide the Club to financial stability.”

The son of a Navy Captain and grandson of a Vice Admiral, Carl was born in Brooklyn, but grew up mostly in New England and was piloting an outboard at 7 and sailing on his own at 8.

He has crewed for Ron Primm and Harry Tenney, and in 2006 for Frank Stewart in the centennial Newport (R.I.) to Bermuda Race. He and Sue are out on the water whenever they can.

Bryant sees his role as “representing the boating community in the Club, which consists of about 300 power boats and sailboats. We’ve just completed some big projects, putting in new fueling and pumpout systems. Going forward, I don’t see any major projects in the near term, but we will want to keep up with maintenance of our waterfront facilities.”

As Commodore, Carl hopes to “fill as many of the slips in the marina as we can, create more participation in the Friday night regattas and get more young people to stick with boating and sailing as a lifetime sport.” He also hopes to institute a series of “short” day and weekend cruises.

“We have such a great junior sailing program,” he said. “I hope to work closely with the program to build the next generation of sailors. My main goal is get more people to enjoy being on the water and each other’s company.”

When Carl is not on the water, he hits the golf course with Sue, a Harvard Ph.D, who was headmistress at several independent schools in Massachusetts.

When they got married, Carl promised to take up golf, Sue’s sport, if she’d take up sailing. Carl said he is much more at home aboard Gambei in rough conditions than staring down a 4-foot putt.

“I can’t ever envision not being on the water,” he said.

Get Your Mind and Body FitIf you have never tried yoga or pilates, now is a great time to start. For February, we are offering a FREE pass for either class to any new participants. Both yoga and pilates will improve your balance and flexibility, increase your strength and improve your mind and body health overall.

And they “make you happier,” says May Britton, who teaches our Yoga and Soul-Cycle classes. May is one of NYCC’s seven instructors. She has been teaching group exercise for 30 years and yoga for the last four.

Our other instructors are Karen Babcock, Sheila Durkin, Megan Britt, Alicia Inman, Lisa Drago and Debbie Harrell. All have years of experience in fitness behind them and all still love to teach.

Megan Britt, yoga and vinyasa style (“flow”) yoga instructor, urges newcomers to try various classes (there are many styles of yoga) to see which style fits their personality and fitness goals best.

Lisa Drago teaches Yin Yoga and multi-level yoga. She says the best thing about teaching yoga for the last 12 years has been “helping people feel great physically and mentally.”

Her advice for first-timers is to “wear comfortable clothing, avoid eating within two hours of class and work at your own pace; remember take breaks when you feel necessary.”

Pick up your Free Class Coupon in the fitness office and come try a class in February on us!

• Please wipe down equipment after use. Spray bottles and cloths are provided for your convenience.
