With the success of the Sunset Concert Series and tapas menu offerings in September on Fridays, we have decided to continue this popular event for the first three weeks in Oc-tober. If you haven’t enjoyed the sunsets from the terrace of the Lafayette room yet, you are missing out on a great Club event.

The annual Pork-a-Palooza cook off is early this month on the 7th. This event continues to grow each year and we are bringing in some outside judges to help decide this year’s top Club chef. Please join us for an afternoon of fun at the Club.

October is still a great time of year to enjoy the Club’s kayaks and paddle boards. The outside pool will remain open for the hearty swimmers or those with wet suits.

The Children’s Halloween Party is on Sunday the 28th in the ballroom and I believe this is the Club staffs’ favorite event of the year.

Don’t forget we have the NFL ticket in the Grill where you can enjoy your favorite team on Sundays.

Jim Grady, CCMGeneral Manager

Summer officially ended about a week ago and the days are getting shorter, but October is one of the most pleasant months of the year. Days are warm,

nights are cool and humidity has almost disappeared.

Jim and his staff have created a fun way to spend Friday evenings. After a tough grueling week, there is no better place to start the weekend - The Friday Night Concert Series and Tapas Night located in the main bar and the outside terrace. The first few Fridays in September, the weather was cool and comfortable and the sunsets have been beautiful. Marty created unique tapas menus from the kitchen and the food is unequaled to anywhere in the city. Great food plus good music and the best setting in Norfolk - equals all the ingredients of a memorable evening. The Concert Series and Tapas Night are going to extend thru October. Mark them on your calendar.

The annual Pork-a-Palooza is set for October 7th. Some of our members will display their barbeque and other cooking skills. This event has grown over the years, and the cooking talent of some of our members rivals the professional Pit Masters of Kansas City and

Memphis Tennessee. Come out and taste their pit creations- always a fun event.

The pool is still open for the brave at heart. The water temperature is dropping, but the lap lanes are open for a few more weeks.

The tennis courts are in excellent shape and plenty of matches are being played. Each night seems to have a different group of players taking advantage of the cool fall evenings. John and Jason are busy with many clinics and junior events.

Congratulations to our Spindle Cup team. The NYCC team competed recently at the Princess Anne Country Club and fought hard the last day to take second place.

The Membership Drive is winding down and comes to an end this month. All new applications received before October 30th will still qualify for this program. We have added about 90 new members to the NYCC community. The Board is pleased with the outcome of the drive and thanks all members for their help and participation.

around the ClubThe Smith Legacy Sails On

For now, Sarah Smith has a paper trophy hanging on her bedroom wall proclaiming her the winner of the Wednesday Night Regattas at Junior Sailing Camp.

The real hardware will be coming along soon. And there should be plenty more trophies in Sarah’s future.

A 7th grader on Norfolk Collegiate’s JV sailing team, Sarah won eight first places during the Wednesday night series, including sweeping all three races on the final night.

Wow.

She also earned praise for her work mentoring younger, inexperienced sailors.

Sarah was born on land, but took to the water not long after, which is hardly a surprise. Sailing is in her blood. Her dad Brook is Captain of the American Rover and granddad Sonny Smith is a local sailing legend and still competing at age 83.

Sarah has been a junior sailing camper since age 8. Her first year she was named

Outstanding Beginner. It turned out to be only the beginning.

She said “making good decisions, having good skills and staying focused” are the keys to being a good sailor.

“I want to get better,”’ she said. “There’s lots to learn. I’d like to work on my roll tacking.”

In addition to attending summer camp at the Club, Sarah competed in regattas at the Hampton Yacht Club and Rappahanock Yacht Club.

She also worked on her dad’s American Rover, “polishing and cleaning.”

Sarah has a brother, Daniel, 6. She enjoys baby sitting and riding her bike around the family’s Ghent neighborhood.

She said she hasn’t decided how far she wants to pursue competitive sailing, but Sarah knows one thing.

“I’ll always be sailing.”

nYCC newSUp The Creek with a Paddle board

When Lori Baccanari and husband David became members in June, she thought “Wouldn’t it be neat if the Club had some paddle boards?”

A month later and – eureka – two new, gleaming white boards had arrived.

“What a surprise,” said Lori who had fallen in love with the growing pastime some time before. “It’s a great way to explore the river and get a workout at the same time.”

The Baccanaris are a part of a growing band of members who have taken to the paddle boards, which are housed near the pier. Our other intrepid paddlers are Mark Haywood, Stephen Leon, Charlie Church, Jeff Tinkham, Greg Addison and Elliot Webb.

David says Lori is the better paddle boarder in the family, but the rookie is catching up fast.

“It might look intimidating, but it really isn’t,” said David. “It helps to have some balance, but you don’t need a lot of athletic ability. You can always paddle from your knees until you get more confident.”

Added Lori: “When it’s choppy, you’re going to get more of a workout, especially your core.”

The Baccanaris, who have three children (Elliot, 10, Stella, 8 and Annabelle, 6 ) joined

primarily because of their boat – Tide the Knot. The name comes from when David whisked off his new bride at the reception via boat.

Since then, the couple has discovered that there is also a lot to do on land at the Club. They’ve been hitting the Fitness Center, taking tennis lessons and sampling the fine dining.

The Baccanaris live in Larchmont. Lori is a Hampton Roads native. David works for a computer software company based in Boston. On a calm, nearly windless Sunday recently, the two took the paddle boards for a spin.

“It’s so peaceful when you are out there,” said Lori. “You see things from a different perspective than being in a boat. You’re more in touch with nature. More people need to try it.”

If you see the Baccanaris, say hello to our new members.

The Baccanari’s enjoying the paddle boards one Sunday afternoon.

If You’re Going to San Francisco...

Be sure to stay in one of our reciprocal clubs. We recently added our third

San Francisco club to our growing list, the Marines’ Memorial Club and Hotel.

NYCC now has almost 110 reciprocal clubs, nation-wide and internationally.

Located in downtown San Francisco, just off historic Union Square, the Marines’ Memorial Club and Hotel was built in 1946 as a living memorial to U.S. Marines who served in World War II.

The Marines’ Museum and Theatre alone makes it a great place to stay. The club prides itself on its traditional décor, modern comforts and first-class service.

In addition to guest rooms, it offers fine dining, a fully appointed fitness facility, business center and lounge.

For more info and to get a look at the club, go to www.marineclub.com.

We’ve Got RoomDon’t forget that NYCC has six guest rooms available for members and their guests. If you need some extra space in the house this holiday season, be sure to give us a call to reserve a room. Rates vary from $90-$120 per night and guests are able to use all of the facilities on property.

YaChtingFine Time on the Rhine

Jim and Carol Forrester and Steen and Trudy Baerentz recently returned from a late-summer’s cruise on the Rhine River.

With a few side trips by car, the hardy quartet visited seven countries during the 11-day trip.

“There were so many things to see. Every place we went we wished we had more time to explore,” said Jim Forrester, NYCC’s Commodore.

“Steen planned the whole trip. He did a great job. He should have his own tour business.”

Steen, who speaks several languages, and Trudy, a German teacher, also served as translators when the need arose.

The group spent most of their time meandering the Rhine on a 300-foot, 120-passenger riverboat, taking in Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Basel and some historic villages, And, of course, sampling the wines of Germany.

“The cruise is a great way to appreciate a country,” said Commodore Jim. “We were able to explore a city every day and the service and food on the boat were first rate.”

Jim can attest to the food. He gained “about seven pounds” on the cruise.

The trip began with an excursion by auto to Brugges in Belgium (“a gorgeous medieval city”) and ended with a car trip over the Alps to Lake Como and the town of Bellagio in Italy.

Everyone had a different favorite place (Jim’s was Strasburg), but wherever they went, they were struck by the antiquity of Europe.

“In one cathedral, Steen pointed out that a cross we were looking at was 1,000 years old,” said Jim. “It gives you a completely different perspective. Think about what America was like 1,000 years ago?”

Jim and Carol Forrester returned in early September and Steen and Trudy stayed a bit longer to visit Steen’s native Denmark.Jim is still sorting out “about a thousand” pictures he took.

Fire Safety on the Docks

Fires can happen at the docks. A common cause is corrosion of marine power cords and marine power pedestals. Boaters should inspect both at least twice a year to minimize the risk of fire.

Corrosion can cause poor conductivity or resistance between the connections of the marine power cord and the dockside pedestal. The increase in resistance can lead to hot spots and an electrical fire.

When doing an inspection, make sure that both ends of the cord are disconnected.

Check out the male plug end and receptacle and remove any sign of corrosion. If either end of the cord heats up when in use and is hot to the touch, this is an indicator that a problem exists.

Fiberglass boats, especially, are highly flammable and explosive when various fuels are on board.

Thanks for your cooperation. Let’s all be safe.

Oct. 7th: Dink Vail RegattaJoin us for NYCC’s only race sanctioned by the Cruising Club of Virginia and that is part of the Broad Bay Sailing Association’s Distance Racing Series. It’s open to all keelboat racers on the Southern Bay and will be held inside Hampton Roads Harbor. The first race will start at 11:00 and is open to boats who wish to race in classes A,B,C, Nonspin or Cruising. An awards ceremony and buffet dinner will be held at 6 p.m. after the race. Please call NYCC to register.

Nov. 8th: Fall Yachting Dinner The date has been set and awards for the spring and fall racing series will given and the winner of the Randolph Garnett Memorial Award will be announced.

Hurricane PlanIt’s the middle of hurricane season. Please be aware that the “Hurricane and Heavy Weather Plan” is located on the NYCC Yachting page of the website. If you are a boat owner, please be sure you have reviewed this information before the arrival of any storm. Steen and Trudy Baerentz

Our “older” players made a strong showing at the 3rd annual Senior Tidewater Cup, finishing in a second-place tie.

David Beatty and Harry Tenney spearheaded the NYCC squad, winning both their matches. The rest of our stalwart club included Wiley Wood, Tony Irwin, Conrad Shumadine, Clay Coupland, Mike O’Hearn and Glenn Ferraro.

Junior Club Championship

The juniors took center stage last month as they played for the Club Championship. In the 18 & Under division, Austin Fink defeated Thomas Boswick in a thriller that

went to a third set tie break. Caroline Herre defeated Emily Martin for third place.

Taylor Acra bested Carter Furr to claim the championship trophy in the 13 & Under. Will Finney edged Ned Broach for third place.

Kate Furr took the 11 & Under title, winning the round robin format and Alex Laplace was second.

Doubles play was rained out and postponed until later in the fall. Contact the Tennis shop for more info.

Tennis Still in Full Swing

There’s plenty of great tennis weather left and we’ve got some big events planned for the fall. Junior Tennis and Pizza Night, our last of the season, is Oct. 5. The Club Singles Championship is Oct. 6-7.

Mark down Oct. 27-28 for the Junior Fall tournament and our Halloween Mixed Doubles Social for Adults. There’ll be prizes for best costumes by a doubles team.

Ladies Place Second at Spindle Cup

After a slow start on Saturday our irrepressible Norfolk Yacht ladies’ Spindle Cup Team roared back on Sunday to claim second place at Princess Anne Country Club. The Country Club of Virginia finished in fourth place with four match wins while Farmington Country Club posted seven wins tying NYCC, but finished in third by virtue of losing more sets throughout the competition. The host team led from the outset in an impressive performance, losing only four matches over the weekend. FitneSSHe was a Shoe-In

for the Job He’s the guy in the “cool’ pair of tennis shoes. That is one way you can spot Kevin Whitesell, our new assistant fitness manager.

Kevin, a self-proclaimed “shoe guy” who has about 30 pair of tennis shoes, came aboard in late September. He’ll be helping manage the outdoor and indoor pools

and eventually he hopes to do some personal training and teach group exercise classes.

He comes to us from the Morale Wellness and Recreation (MWR) department that works with the military where he helped soldiers & sailors stay in great shape all year long.

Kevin earned his under grad degree at North Carolina State. He has a master’s of education in sports management and is currently working toward a master’s in exercise science at Old Dominion University.

“This is a great opportunity to get some managerial experience with a first-rate facility and staff,” he said.

Kevin is 34, single and lives in Virginia Beach. He is an avid kickball player and, true to his profession, works out regularly.

Welcome to NYCC, Kevin.

Water Bugs! It’s is never too early to introduce your child to water beyond the bathtub.

Water Bugs is a class geared to babes 6-to-15 months old and their parents. Parents will learn how to make their little one feel safe and comfortable in the water. And kids will learn to kick, blow bubbles and simply become acclimated to a water environment.

We started classes in September, but they will continue to be held twice a week through October, on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Cost is $12 per class. Sign ups are required. Class size is limited.

You won’t have to worry about it raining on your parade this fall if you’re under an NYCC umbrella. This month ONLY get 10 percent off the purchase of one of our colorful umbrellas. We’ve also got some slick deals on slickers and windbreakers to keep you warm and dry when the rains come. Drop into the Retail Shop at the Fitness Center and check out the great buys.

Let It RainDuring October, we are offering an apple/pumpkin body scrub special from Massage Therapist Marie Owens. Add this delicious-smelling scrub to any massage or skip the massage and just get the scrub.

Appointments are necessary and can be booked through the Fitness Center Front Desk. The 30-minute scrub is $35.

Fall Massage SpecialJust a reminder about youth hours at the Fitness Center as we head into autumn and back to school activities and fall sports.

For young members ages 12-15, youth hours are daily from 12-5 p.m. We also have a second round of youth hours Monday-Thursday, 7-8:30 p.m. Please try to fit your workout in during these times.

Youth Hours

Get your “workout fix” at the Fitness Center, Oct. 20. We will be offering four group exercise classes back-to-back (to back-to-back). Come and take 1,2,3 or – phew --all 4. Watch for more details in the Fitness Center.

Group Exercise Fall Frenzy

Tadpole TrainingIf you have youngsters between 2 and 5 years old, they’re the perfect age to develop swimming skills and learn about water safety and rules.

Our Tadpole Training classes, which started in September, will continue through October.

Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Sundays. Your tadpole will be swimming like a frog in no time.

Tadpole Training classes are parent optional. Mom or Dad may join the little ones in the water or encourage them to be independent swimmers. A major goal of the program is to instill in youngsters a life-long love of swimming and being in the water.

Cost is $15 per class. Sign ups required as space is limited!

To learn more, contact the Fitness Center.
