2013 MEDIA KIT

AbouT usTwice a year, we curate and publish apiary Magazine, an eye-catching showcase of the best local writing from every corner of Philadelphia. And all year long, we maintain the single most comprehensive Philadelphia literary events calendar on the web; release work by and interviews with local writers on our website; produce a YouTube series, entitled apiary mixtape; and run workshops and readings in collaboration with local arts organizations.

And we — a volunteer staff composed of 15 local writers — have a lot of fun doing it.

“Great mag! The vibe is on key, with great images, literary pieces, and descriptions of up & coming events, fellow writers, & local news. apiary provides opportunities for locals to engage themselves in the writing community, along with encouraging others to continue and support the literary arts of Philly! Love it!”

— Response to readership survey

“The journal gives budding young writers the chance to be published alongside already established writers. It’s important. It’s necessary…”

— Eric Smith, Geekadelphia founder, apiary reader

“Congratulations on producing a wonderful journal! We have so enjoyed reading the poems and fiction, and seeing the artwork. It’s a delight and a tribute to your skill and caring about creating a fine community of artists and an audience for them. We had a ball at the launch. It was terrific. What more could anyone hope for!?”

— Betti Kahn, copyeditor, apiary reader

“Apiary is a giant literary disco ball spinning above Philly. It reflects the light of Philadelphia’s distinct voices. When I was done I was amazed that so many different and wonderful people are in one place.”

— Jacob Winterstein, student activist, apiary reader

DIsTrIbuTIonWe publish twice a year. Each issue has a circulation of 30,000.

We distribute magazines in highly-trafficked venues frequented by our target audience, including cafés, Free Library of Philadelphia branches, performing arts venues, cultural nonprofits, restaurants, and bars.

We cultivate strong relationships with our distribution venues, in order to ensure that their staff is familiar with the magazine, and that they notify their followers that the magazine has arrived. We put a great deal of care into the creation of the magazine, and make sure to do the same with its dissemination throughout Philadelphia.

“I came across a pile of apiary Magazines in a local coffee shop. I have always had a passion for reading and writing, so I quickly snatched up a copy. I read through the magazine in one sitting and was so impressed with it that as soon as I got back to my apartment I researched how to submit my own work to apiary, and used the calendar to choose a reading to visit next.”— Melissa Hamilton, college student

“We have run out of your magazine. Here in the Literature Dept. at the Central Branch of the Free Library we were given copies of your magazine, which we placed in our ‘Writers’ Corner.’ They went like hot latkes. We look forward to receiving more next week.”— Kay, supervisor at the Free Library of Philadelphia
