We’re excited to share all that’s happened in

the last year here at Food For Free because

it’s all thanks to you, our donors.

Your support enabled us to expand our

programming, reaching more kids and families

than ever before. We added three new school

markets last year, reaching nearly 50% more

people, and adopted the Somerville Weekend

Backpack Program. We now send nearly 900

kids home with breakfasts, lunches, and

snacks each weekend during the school year.

Thanks to you, we’ve also been able to beef

up our infrastructure to ensure we can support

future growth. We were finally able to replace

our aging and finicky “big” truck with a new

leased vehicle. We’ve added a new full-time

driver to support expanded programming, a

part-time business manager to strengthen our

financial controls, and a part-time marketing

manager so we can better communicate with

you and continue to find new supporters to

join us in the fight against hunger.

And, maybe you’ve already heard, but we

now have a sparkling new kitchen that we can

access full-time to expand our Family Meals

Program. This spring, Biogen completed

construction on a 500 square foot kitchen

space in their headquarters in Kendall

Square. With the help of their construction

partners, this work was done pro-bono and

they have welcomed us into their home. Not

only do we now have our own space, but

access to thousands of volunteers in the

surrounding community.

We hope you’re as excited as we are about the

progress over this past year. We couldn’t do

this without you. Your partnership and support

ensures that we can keep protecting what

we believe is a basic human right—access to

healthy food.

Thank you!

Food RescueOur Food Rescue program works with 85 donors

to rescue food that might otherwise go to waste.

These generous donors include grocery stores,

farms, universities, hospitals, and corporate dining

facilities. We get this food to the people who need

it by partnering with emergency food programs,

schools and colleges, youth programs, and other

programs that reach low-income individuals.

We supplement this rescued food with fruits and

vegetables purchased wholesale, funded largely

by the City of Cambridge, as well as food from the

Greater Boston Food Bank.

From July 2018 through June 2019, we distributed

2.2 million pounds of food—that’s equivalent to 1.8

million meals. Of this, 2 million pounds was rescued

food that might otherwise have gone to waste.

This program serves more than 30,000 individuals

in partnership with more than 100 food programs in

Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea,

Lynn, Medford, Revere, Somerville, and Watertown.

Food Rescue also supports the Family Meals

program, which takes the prepared food we rescue

and repackages it into single-serving meals. (Learn

more about Family Meals on page 7.)

“At Pine Street Inn, the health and wellbeing of our

guests is a priority. Many of our guests are dealing

with a variety of health issues such as diabetes,

heart disease, and hypertension. Food that we

receive from Food For Free ensures that we are

providing a variety of nutritious items as part of

our meals service.”

― PINE STREET INN, BOSTON

“If East End House didn’t have a relationship

with Food For Free we might not have had the

resources to provide Cambridge residents with an

Emergency Pantry service.”

― EAST END HOUSE EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY

“Food For Free allows us to provide a healthy

fresh meal. In past years we would serve canned

vegetable and instant potatoes. Now we serve fresh

fruits and vegetables with every meal. This makes

our diners feel respected—like we’ve gone out of

our way to make the meal really special for them.”

― FAITH KITCHEN, CAMBRIDGE

“Receiving Food For Free impacts our program by

enabling us to serve fresh fruit and vegetables to

our young people. We are able to enhance our

meals, snacks and have fresh fruit for our children

available throughout the week because of your

weekly donation. Young people in our program are

learning that fresh fruit is an ideal option when they

are looking to have a snack throughout the day.”

Family MealsFamily Meals takes prepared food from corporate,

university, and hospital dining services and turns it

into attractive, balanced, single-serving meals that

we distribute to food-insecure populations. We

distribute Family Meals through schools, colleges,

homeless shelters, and other community programs.

In the last year, we worked with about two dozen

food donors and produced 27,000 meals. We

distributed these meals to 13 distribution partners

in eight Greater Boston cities.

“Food insecurity is a campus-wide concern. Food

For Free is an additional resource allowing us

to provide multiple meals to approximately 110

students a month.”

― KRISTINE LARKIN, BUNKER HILL COMMUNITY COLLEGE

SINGLE STOP, CHARLESTOWN

“For years, Food For Free has been an esteemed

partner of On The Rise helping us to provide

essential food support to hundreds of homeless and

formerly-homeless women in our Safe Haven. Last

month, we began receiving Family Meal packages

from Food For Free in part to help fill food benefit

gaps in the aftermath of the government shutdown.

These additional resources filled a critical need,

and we will continue to offer them to women who

come to our door in a food crisis.”

― DELPHENE MOONEY, DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT &

COMMUNICATIONS, ON THE RISE

Huge thanks to Harvard University and to Life

Science Cares for their generous support of this

program! In addition to generous financial support,

Harvard remains our largest donor of prepared food

and packages much of their donations on-site—

saving Food For Free time and money and allowing

us to capture more food than we otherwise could.

Life Science Cares continues to provide generous

funding as well as copious volunteer hours and

valuable connections to corporate food donors.

We are enormously grateful to these partners!

We are so grateful to Biogen for building us a

kitchen! This fantastic new space was built for us

pro-bono by Biogen and their construction part-

ners and offered to us as a dedicated home for

this program. Our new space gives us the capacity

to produce over 100,000 meals a year.

Cambridge and

Somerville Weekend

Backpack Programs Our Weekend Backpack Programs provide students

healthy food for the weekend, so they can arrive

at school on Monday mornings well-nourished and

ready to learn.

Both programs send home two lunches, two

breakfasts, and snacks, including fresh fruit. The

food is discreetly packed in the students’ backpacks

each Friday afternoon.

The Cambridge Weekend Backpack Program

became part of Food For Free in 2016. We adopted

the Somerville Weekend Backpack Program at the

start of the 2018-2019 school year.

These programs are now available to every

elementary and upper school student in Cambridge

and Somerville Public Schools. We served nearly

900 students in the 2018-19 school year.

“[This student] used to complain about being hungry

earlier in the year... but I notice she doesn’t mention

that anymore.”

“He’s been more awake… I know he’s very happy to

receive food for the weekend and that he definitely

uses it for himself. It definitely helps!”

“[My student] really appreciates the food, and

always seems relieved when he receives it.”

Food For Free is enormously grateful to Biogen

Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts,

the City of Cambridge, and the Massachusetts

Department of Agriculture for their support for

these programs.

We are also grateful to Ross Richmond, Krissy

Scommegna, and the Neighborhood Children’s

Foundation for establishing the Somerville Week-

end Backpack Program and working with Food For

Free to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure the

program’s longevity.

School and

Summer Markets School Markets are free farmers’-market-style food

programs held at public schools. This year, Food

For Free held monthly markets at seven schools

during the academic year, up from four in fiscal year

2018. These markets are open to all members of the

school community and served about 500 families—

about 1,400 people—in the last year.

By meeting families where they are, School Markets

offer access to healthy foods while side-stepping

many barriers that can prevent families from

participating in other food programs, like limited

transportation, not enough time, embarrassment,

and fear of deportation.

Our Summer Markets operate when school is out

for the summer. They are hosted in public parks and

some elementary schools in Cambridge. Just like

our School Markets, our Summer Markets are free

and open to the whole community.

Home Delivery Home Delivery serves low-income Cambridge

seniors and people with disabilities, bringing boxes

of food right to their doorsteps twice a month.

Each delivery includes protein, like frozen meat or

poultry, fresh fruit and vegetables, and shelf-stable

groceries, as well as a simple recipe featuring one

or more of the vegetables in that delivery.

Home Delivery reaches about 160 clients each

month, reducing the incidence of meal-skipping,

and making it more likely that they will eat fruits

and vegetables every day.

Client Demographics

87% clients are disabled

56% of clients are 62 years or older

65% clients are female heads of household

7% of clients have children in their household

29% of clients speak a language other than English

Our thanks to the Bushrod H. Campbell and

Adah F. Hall Charity Fund, the City of Cambridge

Department of Human Services Programs, the

Emergency Food and Shelter Program, and Sanofi

Genzyme for supporting Home Delivery!

Sector Supports: Field of Greens and the Transportation PartnershipThese two programs may seem really different but

they share a common goal: getting more healthy

food into the emergency food system.

The Transportation PartnershipThis program picks up food orders from our partner,

the Greater Boston Food Bank, and delivers them to

a dozen food programs that do not have their own

transportation. From July 2018 through June 2019,

The Transportation Partnership delivered 1.15 million

pounds of food, the equivalent of 958,000 meals.

Participating programs pay a small fee for each

delivery, which helps us to maintain the larger truck

this program requires.

Field of GreensHosted by Lindentree Farm, Field of Greens uses

organic methods and volunteer labor to grow

vegetables for distribution to food programs.

For the last four years, Field of Greens has planned

our crops specifically for Pine Street Inn—New

England’s largest homeless shelter. Not only are

we providing Pine Street Inn’s guests with super

nutritious foods, we are also supporting their

culinary arts training program, which gives guests

marketable skills.

Food For Free is tremendously grateful to Linden-

tree Farm and the Kurtz family, who have hosted

Field of Greens since 1991. Lindentree Farm pro-

vides the land, seeds, fertilizer, water, and other

materials to support healthy crops. Field of Greens

just wouldn’t exist if not for the Kurtz’s generosity.
