Page 2 Congregational CareA God of Plenty

“Elisha replied to her, ‘How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?’ ‘Your servant has nothing there at all,’ she said, ‘except a little oil.’” 2 Kings 4:2

In the miracle of the multiplication of the oil, Elisha put the prophet’s widow to work figuring out what she actually does have at hand and how to use that as part of addressing her problem. As we present our problems to the Lord, sometimes he turns the situation around and asks us what we already have in hand and how we can use the talents, gifts, resources, relationships we have developed. In the secular world, we call it “networking.” In our spiritual life, maybe it is more about planting seeds, tending the harvest and being conscious of our relationships with one another.

Our God is a god of abundance. He doesn’t operate on the principles of hoarding or of scarcity. His way is so different from the natural way of the flesh that we must constantly remind ourselves to offer what we have to Him, even if it’s just a little, and He will make it into a gracious plenty—enough and running over.

As we minister to one another in love and compassion, let us not grow weary of doing good and let us continue to hold up with we have to our Master, for He can make our little into a lot, into plenty, into more than enough! --Joy Eastridge

Weight Watchers is well-known for its successful help in losing weight. In contrast with other methods, adherents to WW tend to take off extra pounds and keep it off better. In Kingsport, there are daily meetings on Jack White Drive with programs that combine apps and community and personal coaching.

Check it out by calling 800-651-6000. Call Joy Eastridge, Parish Nurse, for more information and encouragement.

Good at Grief- Grieving can be a long process, sometimes lasting for years and resurfacing after other losses. Led by Chris Taylor and Paula Poe, our grief group meeting on the first Thursday of each month at noon in room 143.

Mom’s Connect- Moms sometimes need to just be together! Casey Johnson is leading this new group that gets together on Thursdays up in room 302, from 9:15-11:00. With Childcare and refreshments provided, the group also offers spiritual care and plain old connection. Contact Brandy to reserve your spot: [email protected]

AA- Working through a daily walk free of alcohol and other substances is challenging. Most people need others’

help to do it well. AA meets daily, several times a day at the Renaissance Center. Google: East Tennessee Intergroup of AA for more specifics. Staying sober is a great goal. Reach out for help and walk with others on their journeys.

Other ways to connect and support: Through our Congregational Care Team, we also provide casseroles, cards, prayer shawls and blankets, home visitation and much more. Let us know if you have new ideas for us or some area of need. We want to be the church for each other!

Opportunities for Support

Stephen Ministry- Need to talk? Just want someone to listen? A Stephen Minister might be able to help. Contact Brad or Retta Overturf ([email protected])

Caregivers Support- On the first Wednesday at noon, caregivers gather to help each other and to learn about caregiving issues. Join us!

Parlor Chats with Randy“Conversations about General Conference 2020”

As we approach General Conference 2020, it is important that FBS becomes informed about how the General Conference business is done, the issues that will be presented, and how decisions made in Minneapolis will impact our denomination, our Annual Conference, and the ministries of our local church. The CLC of our church has set up 16 sessions for our members to meet with our Lead Pastor and become more informed about this upcoming General Conference.

Check weekly publications for the most up-to-date available meetings.

Each session will run about an hour and refreshments will be served.

Attendance will be limited to 12 people in order to facilitate conversation and give those who attend ample time for questions and comments.

Reservations are required and you can make those by calling the reservation line at 423-224-1502. If additional sessions are requested/needed, we will add them to the calendar.

Mission Trip Opportunity During Spring Break

First Broad Street is planning a mission trip for the week of March 23 through March 28, which is Spring Break Week for Kingsport City Schools. The team will be traveling to Lumberton, North Carolina, to join in the rebuilding efforts of the South Carolina Annual Conference Disaster Response Team. Please place these dates on your calendar, and pray about joining others in the opportunity to share and experience God’s love and grace among a community that was devastated by the floods. There is an age limit of 14 years of age and older. This is a great opportunity for families to be involved together as a Spring Break trip. The cost for the trip is $125.00 per person, with a family rate of $250.00 total per family. Transportation, meals, and lodging are included. Please watch for more information to come out soon, or you may call the missions office at 423-224-1531 and speak with Susie for more information.

Summer Mission Intern Positions Available

Applications for the two annual Summer Mission Intern positions will be available in the mission office beginning January 12, and the forms will be due back by April 1. The role of the Summer Mission Intern is to work with the mission staff and volunteer leaders in local mission ministries, as well as the high school and middle school mission trips. This is a ten-week internship. For more information on this position, please contact Danny Howe in the mission office at 423-224-1531.

185 Holiday Food Bags Provided through Generosity of FBSUMC

We want to thank the congregation for such a generous response to the Holiday Food Bag Drive this Thanksgiving and Advent Season. The food items provided in these bags have enabled us to meet the increased need for food of families and individuals in our communities at once for the most financially stressful times of the year. You have provided 185 bags of food during the Holiday Food Bag drive, blessing many families with food, holiday greetings, and cheer, as well as sharing God’s love and grace to those who come to us for assistance. You continue to bless so many through this and other local mission ministries, and we thank God for his faithfulness lived out through the congregation of First Broad Street.

FBSUMC Hosts Miles for SmilesMiles For Smiles is scheduled to return on March 19th and 20th. This ministry is supported by the congregation and also seeks volunteers to facilitate the free dental care provided to so many throughout the year. Currently needed for our hosting are nurses, runners, lunch servers, and people to assist at the registration table. If you would like to know more about this ministry opportunity, or become a volunteer, please call the mission office at 423-224-1531.

Third Saturday Home RepairPlease plan to join us for the 3rd Saturday Home Repair, scheduled on February 15. This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in repairing the home of someone in our community while sharing God’s love and compassion. Typical repairs include porch repair, floor repair, siding and insulation, and wheelchair ramp and construction. Experience is not necessary, and this is open to all ages, from children to senior adults. It is also a great opportunity for families to be in mission together. We meet together in the chapel of the church at 8:30 am for devotions and then go from there. Most projects are completed by lunchtime or soon after. We hope you will plan to join us and maybe even bring a friend. Please look for more information on the table outside the Fellowship Hall, or call the mission office at 423-224-1532 for more information.

God Hugs the World Mission Celebration 2020March 6 - 8

We are excited to announce the dates for our annual Mission Celebration, an event that enables us to celebrate God’s faithfulness to the world through First Broad Street, and allows us to vision where God is leading us into ministry in the days ahead. Leading us in the weekend event as Keynote Speakers are Bishop David Graves and Rev. Dr. Kim Reisman. Bishop Graves is the Resident Bishop of The Alabama/West Florida Annual Conference and past District Superintendent of the Kingsport District here in Holston. Dr. Reisman is the Executive Director of World Methodist Evangelism. Rev. Donat Gyurko will also be with us for the weekend representing the United Methodist Church in Hungary. The congregation of First Broad Street and Donat’s

congregations have entered into an In Mission Together Partnership. We look forward to continuing that journey together during his time with us. Rise Against Hunger will be returning with a new challenge for packaging meals that will be sent to an area of the world where children suffer from chronic malnutrition. Other missionaries and mission leadership will be with us during Sunday School on March 8, sharing their stories of transformation and bearing witness to God’s love and grace through mission and ministry.

Please watch for more information soon. Place these dates on your calendar so that we can celebrate the mission of God to the World, in our community, and around the globe.

Page 12 Reaching OutCollege Mission Trip An Inspirational Experience

The College Mission Trip to the Sea Islands provided a great opportunity for 8 college students along with 10 others from First Broad Street to be in partnership ministry with St Johns Parish, Rockville Presbyterian Church, and Johns Island Presbyterian Church. The team concentrated their efforts on two homes that needed floor repair, one home needed new floors in the two existing bathrooms and the other in numerous rooms of the home. Under the direction of volunteers from Johns Island Presbyterian, the homes were repaired and made safer and more functional by the team.

Additionally, members of the churches and community provided most of our evening meals, and we enjoyed a breakfast and Bible Study provided by the men of St Johns Parish. New Years Eve was celebrated by attending an oyster roast and picnic provided by Rockville Presbyterian Church and Cherry Point Seafood, complete with a bonfire and time of fellowship.

We thank the congregation of First Broad Street for this opportunity to continue in the journey of Missions while attending college. Please enjoy the photos below from our trip and pray with these students as they return to school.
