Introduction

Malaysia is one of the main producers of palm oil in the world. In 2012, Malaysia produced 18.79 million tonnes of crude palm oil and exported 24.56 million tonnes of oil palm products worth RM 71.40 billion. The oil palm industry has to ensure good practices in the transportation of the products. Hence handling, storage and surveying must be carried out properly to preserve the qual-ity of palm products. Surveying of palm oil products demands professional knowledge and skills, both theoretical and practical; to understand the subject from the source to the ship tank. Oil palm products surveying forms an integral and important part of the chain of quality assurance, emphasized by the oil palm industry.

The Oil Palm Products Surveying Course intends to serve the needs of the surveyors, and others in the industry with the aim of ensuring that the oil palm products shipped worldwide are of excellent quality. This course will be useful for those who seek a career as skilled and qualified oil palm products surveyors. This course is also one of the prerequisites for sur-veyors who intend to sit for the Malaysian Oil Palm Products Surveying Examination.

Objectives• To provide an overall view of surveying sector of the oil palm industry;• To impart the essential knowledge on oil palm products surveying;• To enhance the professionalism of the oil palm products surveying sector; and• To prepare the oil palm surveyors for the Malaysian Oil Palm Products Surveying Examination.

MethodologyLectures will be presented in English by speakers from the palm oil industry and other institutions such as PORAM, SIRIM Bhd, surveying companies, installation operators and MISC Bhd.

Subjects covered will include cargo handling, ullaging and weight determination, product specifications, sampling techniques, tank and instrument calibrations, physical and chemical characteristics of oil palm products, quality control and preservation practices, rules and regulations governing oil palm products surveys and food safety.

The course fee DOES NOT cover accomodation and exam. Participants are required to arrange their own accomodation.

Admission to the CourseParticipants are advised to send their completed Application Form with payment payable to ‘Malaysian Palm Oil Board’ not later than 23 august 2013. Registration will only be confirmed upon receipt of the Application Form with payment.

Areas that will be highlighted include tank and pipeline inspection, surveying with safety, standardisation and documentation of survey procedures and quality control practices during loading and discharged.

The course is designed on a training approach where case studies, discussions and a visit to a refinery or palm oil installation are incorporated. An exhibition on sampling tools of oil palm products will be held during the course.

A Certificate of attendance will be awarded on completion of the course.

Who Should Attend • Surveyors of oil palm products and other commodities;• Shippers, installation operators, palm oil traders, insurance agents and bankers;• Personnel from other sectors of the palm oil industry; and• Any person who intends to become a qualified oil palm surveyor.

Surveyors intending to sit for the Malaysian Oil Palm Products Surveying Examination should enroll for this course as it is one of the prerequisites of the examination.

Entry Qualifications

• A secondary school certificate, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or equivalent with two years experience in palm oil survey or business.

• Basic proficiency in English.
