AMS Historian: The position of the AMS Historian is vacant and the Board is asking for volunteers. Duties as stated in the AMS Bylaws 7.1.2 are:

AMS Hol iday Luncheon and Annual Meet ing

With the closing of the Golden Bull in Gathersburg, MD where the holiday lunch and annual meeting has been held for years, this event was relocated to Dutch’s Daughter in Frederick MD on Wednesday, December 6. Larry Bowles, AMS President, welcomed members and guest to the event. The Salvation Army representative led the invocation and blessed the meal. Followed by Ken Barnes leading the Pledge of Alligiance and John Koslin leading the members singing God Bless America. The tradition of donating an unwrapped toy for a child of any age continued as many toys were received and given to the Salvation Army Angel Tree. After the delicious meal, a short business meeting was held to elect the 2018 officers.

Amber Beall informed members of the upcoming events in 2018. She asked for their input of activities/events to be researched and/or added to the event calendar. With the vacancy of the Vice-President, Amber assured there is great support from the

Board for the individual who would fill this position. The Vice-President requirement is to attend Board meetings and ensure the details for the events are finalized. She reminded members the AMS Board Meetings are opened to all members to attend. Harriette Ann Holmes Abbe was born on November 27, 1925 in Kingsport, Tennessee and passed on November 27, 2017. She married William Whipple Abbe in 1948 and built a life and family together over 66 years. She was a 1947 graduate of

Russell Sage College in Troy, NY, where she received a B.S. in Nursing. She accompanied her husband during overseas assignments in Pakistan, Jordan and Thailand between 1960 and 1971. From 1989 to 2003 Harrie and Whip lived in Cambridge, MD, where she opened and ran Drift in Book Sales for a few years in downtown Cambridge. She served as a member of the Dorchester Hospital Auxiliary and as Chairwoman of the Robin Hood Shop. In 2003 Harrie and Whip moved to Zelienople, PA. Harrie is survived by her five children, Charles Cleveland Abbe of Scappoose, OR, Christopher Holmes Abbe of Freeport, ME, Pamela Abbe of Waynesburg, PA, Timothy Abbe of Port Angeles, WA, and James Daniel Abbe of Plymouth, NH; and by four granddaughters. Harriette was preceded in death by Whipple and granddaughter, Leah Abbe Zwerver. A Memorial Service was held Seaman Chapel, Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople, PA. Myron Herbert Abelson On Friday, October 13, 2017 of Rockville, MD. Beloved husband of Joan Abelson; devoted father of Robert and Audrey Abelson. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 16, 2017, 1:30 p.m. at Judean Memorial Gardens Chapel, 16225 Batchellors Forest Rd., Olney, MD. Interment to follow. Samuel (Sam) Casamento On November 16, 2017 Samuel (Sam) Casamento succumbed to cancer. Sam grew up in Georgetown, was an army veteran and retired from the Army Map Service after 35 years. Sam was preceded in death by his siblings: Tony, Phillip, Mary, Elena,

Ann and Joe. He is survived by his sister, Alvera Wathen and brother, Frank Casamento and many nieces & nephews. Donations can be made to: Community Hospice of DC, 3720 Upton St. NW, Washington, DC 20016.

Linda L. Fleming, age 93, of Evanston. Beloved wife to the late Harold R. Fleming, loving mother of Robert (Adva) Fleming and the late Barbara (Richard) Nisbet, grandmother of Jennifer (Steve) Latch,

Colin (Jennifer) Jensen, Michael Fleming, and Mick Nisbet and great grandmother of Chloe, Ella, and Phoebe Latch. Linda was born at the Elephant and Castle, S. London. It was in that area that she lost her family in a bombing raid in 1940. She survived the tragedy of being trapped for two days in a collapsed Anderson air raid shelter. Later the shelter from which she was rescued was reassembled and sent to New York as a part of an exhibit. Linda attended Bloomsbury Art School, from there she studied negative engraving and worked for the British War Office in Cheltenham. Later she worked for the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers as a negative engraver and it was there she met her husband HAP (short for happy-go-lucky). They were married in 1944. Linda continued to work for the U.S. Army in the annex of Selfridges and the Army P.S. in Mount St. until she came to the US in 1945. Linda traveled on the Queen Mary with 3,000 service wives and children. This was one of the first ships to leave Britain with War Brides after WWII ended. Linda and her husband lived for a short time in Bristol, West Virginia. Linda worked for the Army Map Service, and for the Navy Hydrographic Service.

George "Sonny" Hanlen passed away January 22, 2018 at the age of 98. After spending 23 years in the Army as a cartographer, George went to work at AMS and spent 20 years there, part of the time as an instructor until his retirement in1982.

He and his wife, Bea, relocated to Delray Beach, Fl. They enjoyed many years of fun, sun and golf. Bea passed away in 2009 after 68 wonderful years of marriage. George stayed in Delray until 2014 when he relocated to Clermont, FL to be near his daughter. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Nadine and Don Langston and his son and daughter-in-law Harvey and Darla and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will always be remembered as a quiet and gentle man.

Thelma Louise (Iseman) Johnston, a beautiful spirit, departed this life Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017. She was born July 12, 1934, in Manor Township, Armstrong County, to Walter John and Ethel Alverda (Fox) Iseman. She was the third of six

children. Louise graduated from Ford City High School. She married Edson "Buzz" Johnston on June 10, 1955, in Winchester, VA. They later moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the FBI Fingerprinting Division. She later worked for the U.S. Department of Defense, Defense Mapping, as a cartographer for 25 years. After making their home in Virginia for 26 years, she and Buzz moved back to Pennsylvania in 1985 where they opened and operated B&L Baby furniture store in Lower Burrell. Louise was active in the community and had many hobbies and interest. She is survived by her siblings, Ruth (James) Saur, of East Greenbush, N.Y., and Walter Jack (Ruby) Iseman, of Monroe Center, Ill.; as well as nieces nephews as well as her many good friends whom she dearly loved. Louise was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Edson "Buzz" Johnston; and other family members. Ambrose “Al” A. Mager, age 79, of Sun City, AZ recently of New Prague died Dec. 3, 2017 at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague. Born Ambrose Albert Mager on Dec. 31, 1937 in Derrynane Township, rural Le Sueur County, MN. He was the son of John D. and Veronica (Shiprett) Meger. Al attended country school before enlisting in the Air Force at the age of seventeen. He served his country for two years in 1955 – 1958. After his service to his country Al spent all of his career working as a civilian working as a radio technician for the United States Government. In retirement he enjoyed traveling, family gatherings in Minnesota. He was a life member of the Elks Club and American Legion clubs. He is survived by his two brothers Andrew of Belle Plaine and Leonard of Faribault and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his three sisters and five brothers.

George Edward McCollam, of Highland, MD passed away on October 30, 2017 and is survived by beloved wife Eugenia M. McCollam, cherished father of Erin G. McCollam, loving grandfather of

Austin McCollam-Skerkavich and Molly McCollam-Skerkavich dear loved one of Tandy S. Gagnon, Margie Stevens and Paula Miller.

Walter Francis Nocket Born on Mar 21 1931 and passed on January 11th 2018 in Palm Bay, Florida leaving to mourn family and friends.

Stephen E. Patchett, Sr. age 93, passed away peacefully, Friday, January 26th, 2018, after a short stay at Newark Manor Nursing Home. Steve was born in Sodus, NY, on December 31, 1924. He graduated from Sodus High School in 1942, attended a semester at Virginia Tech,

and then enlisted in the US Army, shortly after his 18th birthday. He proudly and honorably served three Army infantry divisions in Europe, for three years, returning home, in 1946, to continue the pursuit of his civil engineering degree at Va. Tech, graduating in 1950. On November 2, 1950, he married the love of his life, Mabel Jenny DeFisher. Shortly thereafter, Steve and Mabel began a 30-year journey with the US Dept. of Defense, the Inter American Geodetic Survey, an adventure that would take them to homes in Nicaragua, Columbia, Peru and the Panama Canal Zone. After raising five children, primarily in Panama, Steve retired in 1980, and he and Mabel returned to Sodus. During his 38-year retirement, Steve volunteered with many civic organizations and traveling. Steve is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mabel; his brother Dan (Shirley), Sodus; sister-in-law Betty DeFisher, Sodus; daughter Elaine Donaldson, Williamson; son Steve Jr (Kristy), Hockley, TX; daughter Gail Givens (John), Boulder, CO; son Russ (Christina), Rochester; and son Tom, Sodus; and grand children and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Hazel Lillian Shell (Ashby), age 92, of McLean, Virginia passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on November 5, 2017. She was the beloved wife of the late James Nathaniel Shell. Hazel was born November 11, 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Service of the US Army Corps of Engineers during and after World War II in Indianapolis, Indiana and Washington, D.C. Mrs. Shell later worked as an office administrator for Dr. Mercantini, DDS, of McLean, Virginia. She was a person of strong faith and a long-time member of Charles Wesley United Methodist Church in McLean, Virginia, where she volunteered as treasurer. Hazel was a member of both the United Methodist Women and the Alter Guild. She also sang in the choir. She had volunteered as Chaplin for the American Legion Post 270 in McLean, Virginia and with the McLean High School Career Center. Mrs. Shell was a loving mother and grandmother Hazel was the devoted sister of Alice Roettger of Indianapolis, Indiana and Frederick William "Bill" Ashby III (deceased). Surviving are her five children; Jackie Roomian of McLean, Virginia, Wendy Shell of Alexandria, Virginia, Kirk Shell of Mount Airy, Maryland, Blair Shell of Midlothian, Virginia, and Joni Dodd of Sherwood, Oregon. She was blessed with seven grandchildren; Graham Shell of Richmond, Virginia, Amy, Samuel and Lillian Grace Roomian of McLean, Virginia, Steven and Virginia Shell of Mount Airy, Maryland and James Dodd of Sherwood, Oregon.

Howard P. Smith was born January 5, 1931, in Mount Kisco, New York. He died December 13, 2017, in Fort Myers, Florida, at the age of 86. He graduated from Carmel High School and then attended Columbia University. His college was interrupted as he

enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951 serving in Korea and was discharged in 1955. He resumed his education at Columbia and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Geology. Howard and wife, Beverly, moved from New York to Virginia where he took a job with the Army Map Service. He worked for the Federal government as a Cartographer and retired from the Defense Mapping Agency in 1987. Howard is survived by his loving wife, Dotty, of 32 years. He is also survived by his two children, Kevin (Karen) Smith of Hayward, CA, and Karen Smith of Fort Myers, FL. Howard and Dotty moved from Virginia and became full-time residents in Fort Myers, FL, in 2002. He was a member of both the Association of Mapping Seniors and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Alumni Association. He enjoyed their yearly get-togethers where he could connect with old friends and revisit great memories and good times.

Peter Stickl passed on February 1, 2018. Peter grew up in Buffalo, NY and attended the State University of NY at Buffalo where he studied cartography. He came to work at the

Defense Mapping Agency in the summer of 1979. He became a Nautical Cartographer working on standard nautical charts and Special Navy Products until 1985 when he became the Agency’s Technical Representative to the Indonesian Hydrographic Office in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 1988 he returned to work as a Nautical Program Manager in the Mapping and Charting Department. From 1990-95 he was a Senior Program Manager in the Programming and Production Office for many Nautical products. In 1995 he became a Branch Chief and later that year was assigned to the Agency’s International Office as Eastern European Desk Officer. This lead to a 1997 assignment to Bonn, Germany as Cartographic Advisor to the Defense Liaison Office in Bonn, where he was responsible for the production regional products and customer support. He returned to NGA’s Headquarters in 2001 where he served as a rotational Watch Officer in Emergency Operations Center. Here he provided daily intelligence updates to the Agency Director and other key Agency leaders. After this six-month assignment, he transferred to the Office of International Affairs. As a Policy Officer he organized and facilitated several interagency committees (RSCOM,IPSCOM, and FRC) that coordinated imagery and geospatial disclosure and release policy. Most noteworthy, Pete managed the office move to the new NGA Headquarters building in late winter of 2011. He retired in April 2011 with 31 years of service. He is survived by his wife Colleen. March 10th would have been his birthday. Please save this date for a celebration of his life. John R. Vaughn, 80 of Tucson, AZ died November 20, 2017. He was born in Jackson, Alabama to the late John H. and Nell T. Vaughn. After graduation from Parrish High School in Selma, Alabama he majored in political science at the University of Alabama and received his BA degree. He later received Masters degrees from George Washington University and the University of Southern California. He was employed in several elements of the Department of Defense in the field of financial management. He ultimately retired from the position of Comptroller of the Defense Mapping Agency. His service was recognized by being twice awarded the Presidential Rank of Meritorious

Executive. He also received the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal. He was married to Dolores Riesmeyer of Wonewoc, Wisconsin for 39 years. Wood, Hector, Col. US Army Retired, 87, of New Port Richey, passed away surrounded by his loving family Dec. 9, 2017. He served in Vietnam, was the Director of the Defense Mapping School and Retired Deputy Director of the DMA Hydro/Topo Center. Among his many medals, he was awarded the Defense Superior Service medal and the Legion of Merit. He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis; children, Phyllis (John) Walichnowski, Patricia (Kurt) Fenochietti, Paul (Ana) Fenochietti and Peggy (Greg) Joseph; his sister, Ofilia Owen; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. held at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Crownsville, MD Jean Powell Emory from Tappahannock, Virginia

died July 1, 2016. She was born in Pineville, VA on January 7, 1930. She married Arthur J. Emory on May 18, 1950 and raised their two children Michael and Theresa in Kensington, Md. Jean worked as a hairdresser for 60 years and

retired in Tappahannock. Jean was preceded in death by her husband Art, and by her son Michael. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa and her grandson, Cory. Julien C. Forget of Chambersburg, PA was born on May 22, 1927 and passed away on Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Menno Haven. Mr. Forget is survived by Mr. Forget is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marguerite Forget Joseph Knipple, passed away on July 14 2017 in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
