It looks like that, about the time your reading this we’ll be enduring some nights in the mid 30s. While frost isn’t predicted, it is a reminder that the growing season is winding down. Soon we’ll be hunkering down for the cold months ahead. To help us through in good spirits, I love to feed the wild birds. Attracting wild birds to your yard is simple.
To endure such unrelenting cold, winter birds need to stay active. Calories and protein fuel this activity. The trick to attracting birds is to provide calories and protein in forms that they prefer.
handled by chickadees and other small birds.
Cracked corn appeals to ground and platform feeding birds like cardinals, doves and juncos.
White millet is also a good source of protein and adds variety to the birds’ diet.
each time you buy a bag but end up buying more bags over the course of the winter.
the more red seed in a blend, the lower the actual value. Learn to ignore fancy bags and cute names. It’s more important that the blend appeal to the birds rather that to you.
Suet, or rendered animal fat, is always available at my feeding station. It is VERY
ers. I prefer buying suet without seeds added to it. It lasts longer and is less attractive to
windows. I hang twiggy branches from the arm surrounding the feeders. This keeps the birds from crashing into the windows. It also gives the birds a place to perch while they wait their turn at the feeder. After they visit the feeder, they’ll return to the branches to peck away at their treat. This keeps them in close viewing range, making the show that much better. For
my seed blend on this for the cardinals, doves, juncos and other ground feeders. Sometimes when I approach the window slowly, I can catch a view of wild turkeys that come to take advantage of any seed that falls off the platform. What a treat! Thanks for the read.

Home improvement projects recouping more at resale In its annual Cost vs. Value Report that compares the cost for 35 popular remodeling projectswith the value those projects retain at resale, Remodeling magazine found that the overall averagecost-value ratio has improved for the first time in six years. Cost-recouped percentages increasedfor all 35 projects examined for the 2013 survey, a remarkable turnaround from just a year earlier, when only three of the 35 projects saw an increase in cost-recouped percentage.
Replacement projects proved especially beneficial for homeowners, who likely also benefittedfrom a real estate market that finally started to stabilize after an extended period of economic un-certainty that heavily influenced both buyers and sellers.
While an economy on the rebound no doubt benefitted homeowners looking to recoup as muchof their home improvement investment at resale as possible, other factors likely contributed aswell. For example, homeowners surveyed for the 2013 report who added a backup power gener-ator recouped more of their investment than in previous years. That's likely because heavily pub-licized storms, such as Superstorm Sandy in late 2012, have forced homeowners and prospectivehomeowners to place a greater emphasis on being prepared for such storms.
Among the upscale projects surveyed, none recouped more of a homeowner's investment thanreplacing existing siding with fiber-cement siding. Homeowners who financed such a project re-couped 79.3 percent of the project's cost, placing it just ahead of a garage door replacement, which recouped an average of 75.2 percent of its cost.
After years of many home improvement projects recouping little of their initial costs at resale, the tide finally seems to be turning for homeowners. More information about the 2013 Cost vs.Value Report is available at www.remodeling.hw.net. FH139526

The Fall Home Care ChecklistBy Sam Erickson
Maybe it’s going back to school, maybe it’s the shorter days or maybe it’s the blinding lights sig-naling the holiday season ahead, but fall home improvement projects often get tossed aside orneglected in favor of more exciting, interesting or pressing activities. This short checklist willhelp guide you to the most important elements to monitor and maintain in your home, keepingyou and your family safe and maximizing the life of your home.
When the time changes, it’s time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. Making sure theyare still operational is quick and easy and will bring peace of mind for another six months. Sim-ilarly, every year, you should check your fire extinguishers to ensure that they have the properpressure. Look for dents and dings, and make sure the pin is in the correct position. Fall is a greattime to do this, as you’ll be spending more time indoors. If the pressure has fallen too low, finda professional to recharge them for you.
Most people don’t use their chimney in the summer, and soot can build up over the course of ayear. Other debris like birds’ nests or even leaves can create unsafe blockages. Have your chimneyinspected by a professional if you plan to use it through the winter.
Small animals will be looking for a warm place to sleep, and your home is a great option forthem. Perform routine pest control in your area, watching out for places where animals might getinto your home.
Most importantly, you’ll want to have your furnace and heating system checked by a professional. This can save you big money on your heating bill, and an inspection can ensure that there isn’t adangerous buildup of carbon monoxide in your home. Furnace and air filters should be changedregularly to maximize safety and efficiency. If you are planning on using space heaters, humidi-fiers or de-humidifiers, they are a great addition to your checklist. Clean them off and inspect theheating and electrical elements for safety, particularly if they have been out of sight in storagefor the warmer months.
Finally, check the caulking around your home. Caulk is a cheap compound that anyone can apply, and it will reduce the amount of energy loss from your home and prevent water damage to floor-ing, walls and windows in the kitchen and bathroom.
This is a big list—and it’s certainly not comprehensive—but all of these things can be accom-plished in one weekend day. Spending minimal time improving and protecting your home for thewinter season will provide great returns.

Did you know?Motorists who still adhere to the old standard of changing their vehicles' oil every 3,000 milesare likely wasting their money. The majority of today's auto manufacturers now build vehiclesthat can go twice as long, if not longer, between oil changes. Many automakers now call for oilchanges every 7,500 miles, and some go even further, recommending oil changes every 10,000miles. Some vehicles can even go as long as 15,000 miles before needing an oil change. Vehicleowners should consult their owner's manuals for advice on how often their vehicles' oil shouldbe changed. When establishing an oil change schedule for their vehicles, many drivers are hesitantto abandon the conventional 3,000 mile interval schedule that was long espoused by the auto in-dustry. But advancements in technology have allowed manufacturers to recommend longer in-tervals between oil changes, which benefits motorists' bottom lines and even the environment.Rather than needlessly wasting perfectly goodoil every 3,000 miles, in many instances motoristscan now continue to use that oil twice as long, if not longer, reducing waste-oil dumping as a re-sult. When consulting an owner's manual for recommended oil change intervals, owners shouldresist the temptation to follow the "severe" schedules listed in many owner's manuals. Such sched-ules are rarely applicable under normal circumstances, and only serve to waste drivers' money
and oil. FC13A643
