One way that I shake off the midwinter blues is to spend some time in my south facing room enjoying whatever sunshine our short days can muster among the houseplants that spend the winter there. Regular readers have heard before about my collection of miniature geraniums. Rest assured, they’re all doing well and are responding to the slightly longer days with a burst of new growth and several are so happy with their situ-ation that they’ve popped out a few buds. BradyBrady is an active 3-year old neutered male Border Collie/Lab mix,

who is up to date on his shots and micro-chipped. He is a very loving and loyal dog who needs room to run. Brady is house trained and if you place a small bell on the door, he will ring it when he

needs to go out! He is good with kids and dogs and is crate trained.

Buddy is a 2 year male neutered Pit/mix. He is loving, sweet, and cuddly. He’s perfectly happy laying in your lap sleeping, being pet,

and snuggling. He’s housebroken, but has occasional accidents. Buddy is very gentle, and good with adults and kids. He’s been left alone,

He doesn’t limp, but he occasionally waddles a bit. The vet said he will probably always be special needs due to his legs. The vet determined it was a birth defect and should not run hard or be

taken on long walks. Buddy should also remain his ideal weight and not be overfed which will put taxing weight on his joints. He may end up with arthritis, and will possibly need pain meds as he gets older. Buddy leads a very mellow lifestyle which will be a blessing

to the right loving family.

IS YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER?

(NAPSI)—Safety on the road is important all year round, but winter weather calls forextra caution behind the wheel to keep you and your passengers safe.

That’s why many auto safety experts including Discount Tire, the world’s largest tire andwheel retailer, urge motorists to keep road safety top of mind this winter and switch totires specifically designed for cold weather driving.

Winter tires are designed for driving in temperatures of 45 degrees or below. If there’sany chance you’ll encounter snow, ice, slush, black ice or wet roads on a consistentbasis, you should prepare your car for these conditions.

Often, drivers aren’t aware that commonly used all-season tires have a rubber compoundthat gradually hardens when temperatures dip below 45 degrees. When this happens, braking and turning are compromised as there is decreased road traction and less grip. It’s also important to note that snow and ice often pile up in the tire grooves and treadblocks on all-season tires, which can impact your vehicle’s performance.

Winter tires are made with higher-silica compounds. This allows the tire to deliver muchbetter traction, which reduces skidding and improves braking. In fact, in temperaturesbelow 45 degrees, winter tires can provide 25 to 50 percent more traction than all-seasontires. In addition, the tread block design includes thousands of very small interlockingslits—known as sipes—to provide extra road-biting edges for improved winter traction.

“Every aspect of a winter tire has been engineered to provide the best performance inwinter conditions and temperature fluctuations while maintaining traction on any surface,”said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “The winter tire advantage will maximize your safetyand provide peace of mind during the winter months.”

Five Tips for Winter Tire Safety

1. Replace your all-season tires with winter tires for driving in temperatures of 45 degreesor below. Make sure to replace all four tires with winter tires to avoid an unsafe tractionmismatch.

2. Don’t forget the wheels when switching to winter tires. Having a set of wheels specif-ically for your set of winter tires will save money in the long run.

3. Check tire inflation pressure regularly and don’t forget the spare. Underinflated orover-inflated tires may result in poor handling, uneven tread wear and poor fuel con-sumption.

4. Rotate your tires at least every 6,000 miles or earlier if irregular or uneven wear de-velops.

5. Make sure the tire shop that gets your tires ready for cold temperatures torques thelug nuts to the proper specifications for your vehicle.
