The developmental Workbook (DW) is arecord of a
student’s ideas as they develop within an art form, as well as their owndevelopment as an artist.
The purpose of the DW is to encourageand record experimentation and criticalthinking. It provides the opportunity forwritten and non-verbal reflection andshould be both source and stimulus fordialogue between themselves andothers.
Emphasis is placed on the developmentalnature of the workbook rather than simplythe evaluation of outcomes. All stages ofmaking in the arts should be recordedfrom conception to performance or displayof the results of the art making process.
Students must use the DW throughout thefive years of the MYP programme.
This can be in the form of audio, digital, visual imagery but must also include writtenpassages of commentary and analysis.
Investigation (Criterion A)
This includes records of the process of creating using avariety of media. These include experiments, the processfor testing appropriateness of form and identifyingstrengths and weakness within the process of making.
Creation (Criterion B)
This should include critical reflections that inform theprocess of making, recognize discoveries and identifypossible changes or directions. These should beevaluative reflections on the capacity of the art workto reflect the idea both in its informative andcompleted form.
Reflection (Criterion C)
This shows the application of Approaches of Learning (ATL)skills. It also comments on overallwork performance in the entire artistic learning process.
Participation(Criterion D)
What should be in it?Care must be taken to ensure that the DW is not
just a diary of events but also a journey of learning!
