Conference background
The innovation of tyres has been an eminent revelation to the Motor vehicle industry since
the discovery of the wheel in ancient times. New technological influences of modern age
have propelled the use of tyres to a prominent level. Sophisticated machines, and
advances in production methods, all have an influence on the dynamics of tyre
manufacturing, marketing, performance, cost and longevity; therefore new technology
required in the performance of tyres is key to make any vehicle to perform at its peak.
In the rise usage of tyres and technological advances, many facets play a major role in the
development of the industry as a whole. Increasing automobile manufacturers'
requirements and ever growing customer expectations have resulted in the evolution of
new product technology. This fascinating product will still continue to develop to
accommodate new applications, safety, health and environmental issues. Fuel efficiency
and major cut in costs are achieved when using more advanced technologies in
developing or producing tyre.
According to s the industry manufactures new pneumatic tyres of rubber of a kind used on
passenger, commercial, agricultural, mining, construction and industrial vehicles and
implements. The total SA market for tyres is approximately 12 million units per year. The
SA tyre manufacturing capability equates to just over 1% of world tyre manufacturing
capacity albeit at a very high technical level. Growth in this industry lies in the export
market either as consignments of tyres or fitted to exported vehicles. The local market
growth is dependent on the increase of the vehicle park. In general modern tyres are
lasting longer and therefore limit market growth.
The South African tyre industry has grown in stature with exponential proportions, but one
cannot ignore the challenges faced in developing the technologies of tyers. Factors like,
waste management issues, the condition of the roads, and regulatory influences to
mention a few make it difficult to embark on new forms of tyre manufacturing.
The conference will aim to promote new technological advances in tyre developments by
discussing sustained strategies in achieving that, and by also focusing on challenges
facing the tyre manufacturing. The other factors that will be looked at are the promotion of
safety, durability, and fuel efficiency influences in tyres.
