Multidisciplinarity in research at UCT

TRANSCRIPT

UCT Research Competencies Assessed Using Elsevier’s SciVal Spotlight

How are competencies created in SciVal® Spotlight?

Competencies are created in three steps:• Step 1. Identify article clusters:

– SciVal Spotlight performs a co-citation analysis on all the articles published in a specific year, such as 2010. This groups the references into "article clusters"

• Step 2. Determine which article clusters are strengths:– Spotlight determines which article clusters represent your individual

institution's or country's strengths. These are the clusters where your institution/country as a whole is highly ranked in article contribution

• Step 3. Group article clusters – Article clusters are then grouped together based on articles they share

from your institution/country. These “competencies” represent research areas where your entire institution or country is a leader.
