Online Policy Primer

Facebook - Terms of Use

By Sharlene Scobie

So.... You want to join Facebook...

The box is ticked that you agree to the terms of use...

Do you read them?

Most people Don’t...

If you Don’t do you know what you’re agreeing to?

Well...

You own the content and information that you post i.e. Photo’s , comments, posts, status updates...

BUT........

Facebook has the right to use all your content or information

So what will Facebook do with your content?

hmmmm “identify you as an individual to a third party” (Bianco ref)

Advertise to you

Provide you & your friends with information about what is happening in your location

use it to keep you safe and secure

Really???

Yes!

BUT....

Facebook does NOT guarantee that your information will be “safe and secure” (Facebook, 2011, 15.3)

So......

Your privacy may be compromised&

your identity stolen

Especially If.....

You leave your privacy settings to public

Public settings of your content =Everyone can access & use your information

Although.....

If you delete your facebook account your content will be deleted

Except.....

When you have shared content with someone else, like a post or photo

And......

facebook keeps a backup copy “for a reasonable period of time”

(Facebook, 2011, 2.2)

What’s a reasonable amount of time?

????????

So.....

Your information is “guided by the company’s beliefs regarding user well-being” and what they think is a reasonable amount of time (Bianco, p.5)

You also agree that you will NOT...

post false or fake information

Have multiple profiles

be under 13

share your password

Use trademarks or someone else’s intellectual property

OR..

Harass

Bully

Post hateful content

Spam others

Use unlawful marketing schemes

And If....

you create an application that Facebook like

They Can.....

Create one similar That will compete with yours

And remember.....

Facebook has a habit of regularly changing their “terms of use”e.g. In 2009 users information that Facebook was to use for marketing etc was not going to expire after an account was deleted (Hayes, 2009, p.40)

Backlash from this resulted in Facebook, revoking changes

Facebook has a tendency to censor & has too much power as an online curatore.g. New York Academy of Art had drawings removed from page as they were drawings of figurative art (Helft, 2011, p.4)

Oh and by the way....

If you’re German

Specific terms apply to you

?????
