Are you concerned more about the development of nuclear power after the Fukushima

nuclear disaster?

I have carried out a survey among 150 Hong Kong

citizens(60 students,30 teachers and 60 other citizens). Here is

the result.

Lee Yuk Wa(A Hong Kong citizen)

6

Q:How does a nuclear power plant generate electricity?

Wong Kamyui@Fukushima nuclear power

plant

7

Mr. Lui(Worker of the power plant)

A nuclear power plant = a steam power plant that is fueled by a radioactive element, like uranium.

Q:How much of the world's electricity comes from nuclear power?

There are still a lot of nuclear power plants in

the world. Mr. Lui(Worker of the power plant)

nuclear

power?

In the view of Fukushima nu-clear disaster, is it still worth

developing nuclear power?

The development of nuclear power is controversial.Lee Yuk Wa

13

HOW THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT THINKS ABOUT NUCLEAR POWER…

14

1.Won’t produce

greenhouse gases

E.g. sulphur dioxide ,

carbon dioxide , nitrogen

oxides.etc

->Reduce air pollution

15

2.Cheaper nuclear

fuels costAmong all the costs of

nuclear generation, the cost

of fuels occupy with a lower

proportion.

16

3.Small in size but

large amounts of

energyMillion times larger than

that from the chemical

energy->Save money

17

4.Reduce our reliance

on fossil fuelsFossil fuels is ranked the top

3 of global energy consumption

(87.04% of the world's energy

consumption)

18

What we have done after 311:① Set up a new

department to regulate the nuclear power generation.

② Limit the exports of some products in the areas aff ected.

③ Install a new emergency generator.

④ Set the emergency evacuation orders.

19

HOW THE JAPANESE CITIZENS THINK ABOUT NUCLEAR POWER…

20

1. The used nuclear fuel is radioactive . It must be sealed up and buried for thousands of years to allow the radioactivity to die away.

21

2. For all that time it must be kept safe from accidents. This is difficult.

22

$ $

3. Comes with an enormous price because it takes strenuous researches , comprehensive safety facilities and manpower.

23

4. Nuclear power generation will produce a lot of heat . This needs plenty of water to cool it down . The sea water temperature will increase and thus the growth of algae, resulting in large amounts of carbon dioxide and the marine life will die.

24

5. Requires a lot of flat land to build nuclear power plants.

25

Lower produc-tion cost

17%

The absence of greenhouse gases

25%

Great storage of nuclear resources

7%

The fuel is smaller in size

but can generate larger amount of

energy21%

Reducing the re-liance on fossil

fuels 30%

Why is it worth developing nuclear power in Japan? (Choose the most

significant reason)

26

Nu-clear

harm-ful to

human body 48%

The used nuclear fuel is radioac-tive11%

It re-quires a lot of

flat land for

build-ing nu-

clear power plants12%

nuclear power comes with an enor-mous price15%

Why is it not suitable to develop nuclear power in Japan? (Choose

the most significant reason)

27

WHAT IF THERE IS ANUCLEAR LEAKAGE?!

28

Radioactive dust

->released into the atmosphere

->causes cancer on human body

Health

29

Food Contamination-Japanese didn’t have food to eat-Export income dropped

30

Residents should be alienated from the nuclear disaster area.->They don’t have a place to live

さようなら !(GOODBYE)

31

Q:What do you suggest the government to do?

Wong Kamyui@Japan

32

Stop using nuclear power!!!Use other renewable powers

instead!!!

(It is the opinion from most of the Japanese forum.)

Mr. Chung(a Japanese)

33

Advanced technology for keeping

the used nuclear

fuel 24%

power generation equipment

5%Equipping

with water tanks to provide cooling water

7%

tion5%

re-new-able

powers instead

(e.g. wind , solar)58%

Others1%

What is the most urgent action that the Japanese government should take to reduce the negative im-pacts of the nuclear disaster?

-better development plans-better designs of nuclear power plants

34

ConclusionFrom the project, we found that:

People concern more about the development of nuclear power

The development of nuclear power is controversial

Still a lot of nuclear power plants

Nuclear is not safe enough

35

We think:Tidal, wind or solar powers can

be used to guarantee people’s safety.

Less electricity should be consumed, fuel used for generating electricity can be reduced.

Safety are more important.
