Are you concerned more about the development of nuclear power after the Fukushima

nuclear disaster?

I have carried out a survey among 150 Hong Kong

citizens(60 students,30 teachers and 60 other citizens). Here is

the result.

Mr. Lui(Worker of the power plant)

A nuclear power plant = a steam power plant that is fueled by a radioactive element, like uranium.

There are still a lot of nuclear power plants in

the world. Mr. Lui(Worker of the power plant)

In the view of Fukushima nu-clear disaster, is it still worth

developing nuclear power?

The development of nuclear power is controversial.Lee Yuk Wa

HOW THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT THINKS ABOUT NUCLEAR POWER…

14

Page 16: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

1.Won’t produce

greenhouse gases

E.g. sulphur dioxide ,

carbon dioxide , nitrogen

oxides.etc

->Reduce air pollution

15

Page 17: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

2.Cheaper nuclear

fuels costAmong all the costs of

nuclear generation, the cost

of fuels occupy with a lower

proportion.

16

Page 18: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

3.Small in size but

large amounts of

energyMillion times larger than

that from the chemical

energy->Save money

17

Page 19: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

4.Reduce our reliance

on fossil fuelsFossil fuels is ranked the top

3 of global energy consumption

(87.04% of the world's energy

consumption)

18

Page 20: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

What we have done after 311:① Set up a new

department to regulate the nuclear power generation.

② Limit the exports of some products in the areas aff ected.

③ Install a new emergency generator.

④ Set the emergency evacuation orders.

HOW THE JAPANESE CITIZENS THINK ABOUT NUCLEAR POWER…

20

Page 22: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

1. The used nuclear fuel is radioactive . It must be sealed up and buried for thousands of years to allow the radioactivity to die away.

21

Page 23: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

2. For all that time it must be kept safe from accidents. This is difficult.

22

Page 24: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

$ $

3. Comes with an enormous price because it takes strenuous researches , comprehensive safety facilities and manpower.

23

Page 25: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

4. Nuclear power generation will produce a lot of heat . This needs plenty of water to cool it down . The sea water temperature will increase and thus the growth of algae, resulting in large amounts of carbon dioxide and the marine life will die.

24

Page 26: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

5. Requires a lot of flat land to build nuclear power plants.

Q:What do you suggest the government to do?

Wong Kamyui@Japan

32

Page 34: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

Stop using nuclear power!!!Use other renewable powers

instead!!!

(It is the opinion from most of the Japanese forum.)

What is the most urgent action that the Japanese government should take to reduce the negative im-pacts of the nuclear disaster?

-better development plans-better designs of nuclear power plants

34

Page 36: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

ConclusionFrom the project, we found that:

People concern more about the development of nuclear power

The development of nuclear power is controversial

Still a lot of nuclear power plants

Nuclear is not safe enough

35

Page 37: Case Study- Nuclear Radiation In Japan In March2011 PROJECT-BASED LEARNING 1

We think:Tidal, wind or solar powers can

be used to guarantee people’s safety.

Less electricity should be consumed, fuel used for generating electricity can be reduced.

Safety are more important.
