Welcome to snails on the loose,

A project we’re working on which includes a lot of snails. This project is by Aoife and Hannah.

Meet our snails!Colin 2.0 AbbieColin 2.0 is Colin’s

replacement, since he got lost. . .

Abbie is Colin’s playground, He loves climbing on her shell.

Abbie is very lazy and likes to move in her own time.

She likes our arms.

Snail QuestionsAre snails born with they’re shells? Yes they

are.Do they have organs? Yes snails have organs

inside their shellsHow do they communicate? They use they’re

tentacles and touch. What gender are snails? Snails are both male

and female.Do they have bones? Yes, Their shell is like

an exo-skeleton.

Speeds Colin has a top speed of 10.5 cm per minute whilst Abbie’s top speed is 5.5 cm per minute. Colin could go at an average of 480 cm/ph! Abbie’s is 240 cm/ph, So Colin could go up to double Abbie’s speed! We measured their speed by timing them for 1 minute, measuring their movement with markers and pipe cleaners.

Fact FileColin we think is about 3 years old and Abbie

is about the same age, we can tell this by the amount of swirls on their shells.

A snail’s shell can repair itself after it gets cracked!

Snails like to live in a damp area to keep their body wet.

A snail has all its organs inside they’re shell, so if it gets a big crack, its could damage they’re organs.

DescriptionColin is a very lively snail, compared to

Abbie. They like it when the lights are off and when

it’s wet. They like to eat lettuce and leaves mostly.

HabitatSnails like to live in

a wet environment, with lots of grass and leaves and maybe a bit of lettuce if possible. Snails can come out when it rains and becomes wet outside.

They also like to blend in with their surroundings to hide from predators. Some of their predators are frogs, reptiles and some birds, hedgehogs shrews and moles also eat them.

Species Of Snails There are a lot of species of snails, The garden snail’s name is Helix Aspersa, which would be the snail that you would see in everyday life. The Roman snail’s name Helix pomatia and the Giant African Land Snail is called the Achatina Fulica.

FoodSnails like leaves and in some cases,

paper to munch on during the day. Our snails seem to love the taste of

paper, We don’t exactly know why though.

The Snails only eat the leafy part of the leaves, not the stalk.

Reproduction.Snails can be both female and male, so they

can mate with themselves.Snails are not mammals so they lay eggs. Baby snails are born with their shells already

attached to them.Snails can lay up to 100 eggs between each

other.

Predators.Snails have many

predators including birds foxes and hedgehogs.

Snails have hard shells so it is hard for prey get at their insides.

Movement.Snails move by gliding in a way, using many

muscles as they move. As it contract its muscles and slime is

produced, which allows the snail to glide on many surfaces.

When a snail is gliding on your skin, it can feel cold and wet for the reasons of ; a)They are cold blooded and b) the slime they produce.

The scientific name for snails are gastropods.

ShellsThey snails shells mostly protect them from

any harm.If the shell gets a small crack it can repair

itself, but if the crack is to big, it can affect they’re major organs.

You can tell how old a snail is by counting the amount of swirls on their shells. Ex. If it has three swirls it is three years old.
