HUNTER’S AMBULANCE ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC Why We Are Here…

Many may not recall what they were doing on the night of September 2, 1989. Some, however, remember like it was yesterday. Jose' Aguilar and Bill Lawton were training a new employee, Carol Gillooly, who was completing her last orientation shift prior to being released for regular duty: A call came in for the return of an elderly patient to his convalescent home in Colchester. This was not an emergency transport, but carried with it every element of the importance of patient care and responsibility. Bill, Carol and Jose' greeted the patient, moved and secured him in the ambulance, and the transport began. In the darkness of this cool September night, Bill Lawton was driving the ambulance with all necessary due regard, protecting the four lives he had on board. In fact, just one week earlier Bill had completed a Defensive Driving Program being piloted by Hunter’s Ambulance for adoption by the State of Connecticut. From Middletown to Portland and East Hampton through the twists and turns of Route 16, they innocently proceeded to their destination as they and many crews had done so many times before. Ahead of them and out of sight, a drunken man recklessly rocketed towards them going back and forth across the centerline. His pickup truck suddenly came into view around a corner in a blur of white lights. The peacefulness of the crisp country air was shattered. The pickup truck crossed into the path of the ambulance from around the bend and hit the ambulance head-on at a high rate of speed. The two vehicles became one, exploding into flames. The flames crept ominously closer and closer into the twisted mixture of metal that was once an ambulance. As Bill fought for his life pinned in the cab of the ambulance, rescuers responded by air and ground, and came to the aid of their brothers and sister. They worked with strength and intensity almost beyond their human abilities. These life saving efforts were the very same skills that Jose, Bill and Carol had used to help and save the lives of many people before this night. The heart-wrenching, nearly overwhelming outcome was the loss of life of the patient and the caregivers Bill Lawton, EMT, and Carol Gillooly, EMT. Jose' barely survived and after a lengthy rehabilitation remained permanently disabled. Words, both spoken and written, cannot do justice to the senselessness of the loss of these lives. Lives that were ripped away from the carelessness of one drunk driver. Lives that had committed themselves to helping others in need. This tournament mourns the loss of Carol and Bill. It is in their memory, and in the honor of their life saving spirit of “ Concern for Others” that we are here.

CAROL GILLOOLY AND WILLIAM LAWTON HONORED DURING THE

TWELFTH ANNUAL NATIONAL EMS MEMORIAL SERVICE, MAY 29, 2004 AT ROANOKE, VIRGINIA

On May 29, 2004, Carol Gillooly and William Lawton were honored and among fourteen new inductees into the National EMS Memorial The reverent and moving National EMS Memorial Service is held each spring in Roanoke to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow men and women. The National EMS Memorial Service is not a single event but rather a series of events spanning three days. These events began on Friday morning with private, scheduled tours for the "To the Rescue" Museum and the "Tree of Life" Memorial, and ended mid-morning Sunday with the conclusion of the Family Breakfast. On Saturday afternoon, May 29, 2004, many joined the tour to “To The Rescue” Museum and an unveiling of the Tree of Life. Each fallen individual has his or her name inscribed on a bronze oak leaf and added to the tree. The oak leaf has historically been accepted as a symbol of strength, valor, and solid character - all are characteristics shared by both Carol and Bill. The National EMS Memorial is housed at the "To The Rescue" Museum. The Tree of Life memorializes those who have lost their lives in the unselfish performance of their duties of saving others. During Saturday night, May 29, 2004, the formal memorial service was held at the First Baptist Church. The Boston EMS Bagpipes led the color guard, which carried state flags of those being honored. Representatives in honor guard uniforms escorted the families to the altar during the service. At the altar, the families were greeted by an honor guard and were saluted. Each family received a medal signifying the eternal memory of their loved one, a U.S. flag that was flown over the Capitol recognizing service to their Country and a white rose representing their undying love. The service was marked with poignant remarks and songs offered by fellow EMS professionals. A video montage captured the lives of the individuals honored and needless to say, there was not a dry eye in the house for the two-hour service. Both color and honor guards assembled in the street fronting the church as taps was played during a fly over by a local air medical helicopter. Much of the service has been captured on video and was available for viewing for those who attended the Hunter's Ambulance 15th Annual Golf Classic on September 13, 2004. For additional information, you may access <http://www.nemsms.org/2004.htm> NEMSMS <http://nemsms.org/graphics/memflag-s.gif> <http://nemsms.org/2004.htm> The Gillooly and Lawton families were extremely appreciative for Hunter’s presence at this very poignant ceremony in which Carol and Bill were honored and remembered.

SPECIAL DEDICATION

In Loving Memory Of

Vern A . Hunter April 21, 1931 - March 23, 2014

Vern and Barbara Hunter established Hunter’s Ambulance Service in 1963 and Hunter Limousines in 1989. Vern Hunter served as Chairman of the Board of Hunter’s Ambulance Service. Vern’s vision and contribution laid the foundation for Emergency Medical Services. He devoted his life to advance the cause of EMS not only in Connecticut but nationwide. Vern graduated from the first Emergency Medical Technician course in the State of Connecticut in 1971, and went on to further his medical certification to the level of EMT-IV. Through many acquisitions and expansions, Vern saw his small family business become one of the largest ambulance companies in Connecticut. He made an immeasurable impact on countless lives truly surpassing any expectations he may have had 51 years ago. The legacy created through the service given by each and every family member and employee past and present, and the countless lives that have been impacted because of the mission Vern created has far surpassed any expectations he may have had fifty one years ago when he bought his first ambulance. Vern maintained memberships to numerous civic organizations, as well as receiving countless awards for his dedication and accomplishments, some of which are listed in our Company Profile published in the Hunter’s Ambulance Annual Golf Classic Program Book. Vern honored the memories of William and Carol as he supported and enjoyed the fun-filled days of each golf tournament since its origination in 1990. He shared great camaraderie with golfers and volunteers, wishing the golfers luck on the course and assisting the volunteers.

In Loving Memory Of

Barbara M . Hunter July 18, 1932 to June 21, 2011

Vern and Barbara Hunter established Hunter’s Ambulance Service in 1963 and Hunter Limousines in 1989. Barbara will always be remembered for her love, kindness and genuine concern for everyone. She enjoyed taking the time to talk to those she met at work, social, community and family events. At these events you would always see Barbara with a smile on her face. Whether her conversations were short or long, you knew she truly cared about the person. She always took the time to listen and offer support, guidance and a gentle hand to hold. Barbara honored the memories of William and Carol as she supported and enjoyed the fun-filled days of each golf tournament since its origination in 1990. She shared great camaraderie with the golfers and volunteers, wishing the golfers luck on the course and assisting the volunteers.

Dan M. Hunter July 7, 1959—October 29, 2008

In 1979, Dan Hunter joined the family business – Hunter’s Ambulance – founded by his parents, Vern and Barbara Hunter in 1963. Following his parents’ strong community oriented values, Dan learned the im-portance of providing emergency medical care to those in need. Through his perseverance, dedication to the community, and sincere desire to help others, he advanced his education in pre-hospital emergency medicine management attending numerous advanced courses throughout the country. Dan always kept an eye open watching for those in need. Dan’s desire to help others was evident in the many personal, community, charity and fundraiser events or challenges he assisted with and participated in. When he realized there was a need, he did not ask “Why did this happen?” He said, “What can I do to make a posi-tive change?” When asking others for their assistance, he never accepted “No” as an answer. He found a way to help no matter how big or how small the challenge was! Others would rally around his inspiration to help others! After William and Carol lost their lives during the tragic accident on September 2, 1989, Dan’s overwhelming desire to honor William and Carol evolved into our Annual Golf Classic in their memory.
