    ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

    Dear Reader,

    ABRA News:

The Australia Day Breakfast this year was again verysuccessful with over 600 breakfasts given out for the secondyear running.

As usual, the last hour 10  –  11am was far less attended withonly about 80 breakfasts given out between 10 –  10:30 whensupplies ran out.It was an exceptional beach day and ramps were again closedmid morning. It was reported they managed to fit four rowsof cars on the beach in some areas with the very low tide.

Our Tour Down Under has also been and gone and we mustcongratulate our sister group Aldinga Bay Business AndTourism Association (ABBTA) for their prowess inorganising the very successful Snapper Point section of thatevent.

Planning is underway to host a ‘Deadly Fun Run event’ in thearea. This is part of the nationally based Indigenous Marathonorganisation and caters for indigenous and non indigenous people. It aims to improve fitness from couch sitter to a 5 kmrun (or walk), with various events offered, following atraining programme, of 1 km 3 km and up to 5km and beyond. Representatives from each location are then invitedto take part in a run at Uluru each year. Like the City –  Bay itis proposed to be a family oriented event not just for eliteathletes.

Transport SA is seeking feedback on their plans for the Old

Coach Road to Malpas Road section of South Road. Thisincludes a roundabout at the Port Road & South Roadintersection with dedicated turning lanes, and a laneseparation fence between the roundabout and Malpas Roadadjacent to the overtaking lane. This barrier will eliminateturning right into Little Road when travelling north towardthe city. Speed limits are also proposed to be reduced by10kph in each section between here and Seaford Heights.

I’m pleased to report that our committee has again been madefully operational. Fred Carrangis and Bernice Wuttke both volunteered at our

February general meeting and both were elected at that

something for your community let us know.

    ABOUT THIS ISSUE:

A drop in advertising revenue means we are back to 40 pages again this month but we hope there is still enoughvariety to be worthwhile reading. Stan Back and hiscomputer are both feeling their age so we haven’t got his

usual “From The Archives” section this month. PeterEvans is also having a break so we are missing hisspiritually uplifting section We hope to see them both back next month.I hope you enjoy the issue.

    Willunga’s Women in White

Join us in commemorating the significant workof the women of the Willunga Cheer-Up Society duringWorld War I.

Our exhibition will highlight the activities and practical work of these ‘women in white’ from a

country sub-branch perspective, where food andcomforts were made and accumulated throughdonation, knitting circles, and entrance fees to euchrenights and dances. They were then forwarded to theAdelaide-based Cheer-Up Hut.

Most of the Cheer-Up workers had familymembers or friends away at the war and many are

represented on the collage presented to the Willungacommunity. The collage has recently been revitalisedand will be the focus of the exhibition, which will alsoinclude artefacts from World War I, such as the ‘DeadMan’s Penny’ presented to the family of local man,Frederick Farmer Bassett, who died during the conflict.A book about the Willunga Cheer-Ups, the collage andthe soldiers on it will be available for sale.

Media Release (ALDINGA AIRFIELD UPDATE)Environment Protection Authority

    11 February 2016

Licence restrictions for Aldinga aircraft movements

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issuedits first licence for an aerodrome in South Australia, tonecessitate regulating the impact of flight movements on

residents around Aldinga. This follows a judgement in the Environment, Resourcesand Development (ERD) Court that determined theairfield operator, Aldinga Aviation Pty Ltd, had exceededthe annual flight movement threshold of 20,000 anddismissing an appeal against the EPA.

Executive Director Operations, Andrew Wood said the judgement upheld the EPA’s position based on this

threshold that a licence was necessary for the company tomanage the Aldinga Airfield which accommodates 70aircraft including a flying school and a charter company.

“The EPA has welcomed this finding that more than20,000 movements per year by commercial or charteraircraft involving take-off and landing constitutes a prescribed activity of environmental significance withinthe Environment Protection Act 1993,” Mr Wood said.

The City of Onkaparinga first raised concerns with theEPA in 2012 that operations at the Aldinga Airfield hadincreased to a level that would require a licence.

“While there has been no precedent for this action inSouth Australia, the  Environment Protection Act 1993,offers the option to regulate aerodromes as a licensedactivity when the number of flights exceed an annual20,000 movement threshold,” Mr Wood said.

“The EPA undertook an environmental noise study todetermine the overall contribution of aircraft flyovers inthe Aldinga area and conducted extensive consultationwith all relevant stakeholders to inform them of thelicence application process.”

The licence imposed on Aldinga Aviation Pty Ltdincludes conditions to curb problematic noise disturbanceissues by restricting the flight movement hours to

between 7am to 9pm, and from 6am during periods ofdaylight saving.

Aircraft landings will be permitted until 10pm.

Circuit flying will only be permitted between 8am and8pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 8pm on Sundayand prohibited on some public holidays.

“Aldinga Aviation Pty Ltd must also develop anEnvironmental Management Plan outlining measures thatwill be undertaken to minimise noise nuisance impacts onthe local community,” Mr Wood said.

The Stella Awards. For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named

after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee onherself and successfully sued McDonald's in NewMexico, where she purchased coffee. You may recallthat she took the lid off the coffee and put it between herknees while she was driving. Who would ever think onecould get burned doing that, right? That's right; these areawards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts inthe U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that makes youscratch your head... So keep your head scratcher handy.

Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded$80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle

tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniturestore. The store owners were understandably surprised bythe verdict, considering the running toddler was her own

Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbour ran over hishand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn'tnotice there was someone at the wheel of the car when hewas trying to steal his neighbour’s hubcaps.

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, who wasleaving a house he had just burgled by way of the garage.

Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage dooropener malfunctioned and he could not get the garagedoor to open. (to p 19)

    CEMETERY HUMOUR

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by thetree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts.'One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,' saidone boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward thefence.

Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside thecemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough,he heard, 'One for you, one for me, one for you, one forme...'

He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bikeand rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man witha cane, hobbling along.

'Come here quick,' said the boy, 'you won't believe what Iheard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemeterydividing up the souls!'

The man said, 'Beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me towalk.' When the boy insisted though, the man hobbledslowly to the cemetery.

Standing by the fence they heard, 'One for you, one forme. One for you, One for me.'

The old man whispered, 'Boy, you've been tellin' me the

truth. Let's see if we can see the Lord…

Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yetwere still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter andtighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord.

At last they heard, 'One for you, onefor me. That's all.. Now let's go getthose nuts by the fence and we'll bedone....

They say the old man had the leadfor a good half-mile before the kidon the bike passed him.

National Trust Book Sale Returns to Willunga

The fabulous Willunga National Trust Book Sale hasreturned to Willunga. Thousands of high quality books andmagazines have been donated in a fantastic response to the

Willunga National Trust Book Appeal. According to MarkStaniforth, the Manager of the Book Sale, “People have theopportunity here to buy printed books at ebooks prices. Weare operating for one day only, and people can buy as many books and magazines as they like.”

Are printed books better than ebooks “Definitely!” argues

Mark “Printed books give you tactile enjoyment, and it ismuch easier to follow a complex plot. You also understandand remember more. Although ebooks have the advantageof virtual storage, reading from screens before bed candisrupt your sleep. Most of the books are $1 or $2, a

bargain in anyone’s terms. Buying printed books at these prices means you can read them and then pass them onwithout a qualm, so the storage problem is solved.”

The National Trust Book Sale is on at the Show Hall, MainRoad Willunga on March 19, from 8am to 4pm.

    Josh and his grandson.

Old Josh was sat in his garden, sunbathing in the deck chair when he noticed his grand-son kneeling on the lawn with aworm. When he asked his grandson what he was doing, he found that he was trying to push the worm down the holefrom which it came.

"If you can get that worm back in that hole I'll give you ten dollars," said Josh. His grandson sat and thought for a moment, then rushed into the house. A few minutes later he returned with his

mother's hair spray. He picked up the worm by one end and, as he let it hang down, he sprayed it all over with the hairspray. The spray set and the worm became stiff and hard. It was now easy to push the worm back in the hole. Josh wasamazed. He gave the boy ten dollars, picked up the hair spray and went indoors.About an hour later Josh came back into the garden and gave his grand-son another ten dollars."But grandpa," said the boy, "you've already given me the ten dollars you promised.""That's from your grandma," said Josh.

The Stella Awards. (continued from p 8)

Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the doorconnecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight days and survive on a case of Pepsiand a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner'sinsurance company claiming undue mental anguish.Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay

Dickson $500,000 for his anguish. We should all havethat kind of anguish!

Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, garnered 4thPlace in the Stella's when he was awarded $14,500 plusmedical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his nextdoor neighbour’s beagle - even though the beagle was ona chain in its owner's fenced yard. Williams did not getas much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into theyard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.

Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania gets third place because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to payher $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on thefloor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30seconds earlier during an argument.

Kara Walton, of Claymont, Delaware sued the owner of anight club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front

teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneakthrough the ladies room window to avoid paying the$3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to payher $12,000... oh, yeah, plus dental expenses. Go figure.

FIRST PLACE - absolutely brilliant! This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was:Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased new 32-foot Winnebago motor home.On her first trip home, from an OU football game, havingdriven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of

the Winnebago to make herself sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and over turned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs.Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner'smanual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seatwhile the cruise control was set.The Oklahoma jury awarded her, (ARE YOU SITTINGDOWN ? ) $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home.Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result ofthis suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who

might also buy a motor home.

    Talking ealth

    with Kelly Harding ND

Kids Health / Back to School

Breathing a sigh of relief now that school holidaysare over and the kids are back at school again? To

ensure your kids Are breathing easy as well, protectthem from colds and ‘flus this school year.

At school and childcare, kids are exposed to a hostof bacteria and viruses and are often susceptible toinfections. The start of the school year is the perfecttime to boost your child’s immunity, so that theystay strong and healthy throughout the year anddon’t fall victim to frequent infections. A strong

immunity also helps set the stage for good health inadult life.

Over 70% of our immune system lives in the gut. Therefore having high levels of good bacteria in thedigestive system is essential for building strongimmune systems in growing children. The beneficial

balance can be upset by many factors, includingantibiotics, high sugar diets and stress. This can leadto increased risk of colds and flus. Probiotics are agroup of beneficial bacteria that can be given to yourkids as a supplement to aid in the development andmaintenance of healthy digestive and immunefunction.

As well as Probiotics, Andrographis can be used tostimulate the immune system. Vitamin C increasesthe activity of infection fighting white blood cellsand reduces the incidence of colds. While Zinc iscrucial for the normal development of white bloodcells, the body’s main defence against infection. To support the immune system, these diet andlifestyle tips may help: Ensure your child eats lotsof vegetables and fruit every day. Ensure the child

eats protein rich foods in each meal or snack. Ensureyour child drinks plenty of water daily. Reducesugary foods and sweats, as these can suppressoptimal immune function. Avoid or severely limit

processed foods, additives and artificial flavours.Ensure your child has adequate sleep and rest andlastly encourage regular exercise.

Come in and see Kelly Harding with your childtoday! She can help keep your child healthy thisyear. Healthy kids are happier and behave better, need less time off school and cause less disruption to

the smooth running of family life.

    Dear Editor Kevin,

The following quote from a splendid history of theOttoman empire I’m reading, has a present day ring about

    it. Nothing’s new!

By the mid - 17th century with widespread unrest in

the empire, the Ottomans were driven to extraordinarylevies to bridge the gap, many of which, having been

tried once, became permanent burdens on the people

Dear Editor,I love reading your Coastal Views, but felt that I must pick you up on a small item on page 28, the Senior’s

Exam. (February issue) I worked at Metro meat for 15years in the Offal Department & for around 4 of thoseyears I was in the BEEF runner room, where we were thefirst step in the manufacture of cat gut.The sheep runners were used for sausage skins & the‘bung’ end was used for the ‘bung’ Fritz. Pig runners were too brittle to be ‘run’ off & had to be cutoff by hand & were used for frankfurts & saveloys at thattime. Do not know about horses. We also sent some small lamb ‘bung’ ends to NewZealand to be made into ‘frangers’!

Much excitement when we pulled up to deliver.Due to the overwhelming success of our raffle we wereable to raise enough funds to purchase the Lukas PedalCutter. The Lukas pedal cutter are a smaller version ofour main cutters, being smaller they will get into tighter places to cut foot pedals and steering wheels in the event

of an accident. They will be a valuable piece of equip-ment on our rescue appliance. We had the pedal cutterdelivered to our station during February and our rescuecrew have familiarized themselves with this new tool.

It is with our communities help that we are able to helpour community in time of need.

English is a crazy language! If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eatsvegetables, what does a humanitarianeat? (See pic p9 - Ed)

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?Ship by truck and send cargo by ship?Have noses that run and feet thatsmell?

How can a slim chance and a fatchance be the same, while a wise manand a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the uniquelunacy of a language in which yourhouse can burn up as it burns down, in

which you fill in a form by filling itout and in which, an alarm goes off bygoing on.

Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with'quick' ? To help with planting, the farmertaught his sow to sow.

How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

    Italian anyone?
