life studying it, traveling through it, and sharing my passion for it with

all those who have journeyed with me This is a complex continent

also, whose long history and diverse cultures add to its fascination, no

less than its celebrated cuisines and stunning physical beauty

In the pages of this brochure is an exciting, and intriguingly diverse,

choice of itineraries All departures are guaranteed, based on a

minimum of 2 passengers I will accompany each itinerary, for this is

very much a personal selection, made possible thanks to the friends,

colleagues and extraordinary acquaintances I have the privilege to

know, some of whom you will meet when you travel with me

I am never quite sure whether my service as a diplomat best qualifies

me for tour guiding, or my training as an art historian – or simply my

love of good food and wine! Perhaps it is just the deep affection I hold

for these lands, and my desire that those traveling with me should

have an enriching experience too; that each day we travel together

brings something special and memorable

This collection benefits from my long experi-

ence in travel: for 22 years I was a Director with

prestigious travel company Abercrombie & Kent,

designing itineraries into Europe for the discerning

North American market, and in 2008 Condé Nast

Traveler first honoured me as a Top Travel Specialist

for my work in France – so it has a fine pedigree!

So when we were thinking of an Italy

We start at an equestrian ranch in the lovely, rolling countryside

of northern Lazio – a land of almond orchards and lakes –

where we enjoy lunch with a Princess in her medieval castle, and

hear from a journalist about the Italy of today Afterwards it’s

up to Orvieto, perched atop a 1,000 foot cliff with its stunning

cathedral and its 3,000 year old underground Etruscan city

Gentle Umbria brings us to Perugia (great chocolate!) and the

mystical town of Assisi, where a monk privately takes us around

the burial chapel of St Francis

There’s a visit to Cortona, setting for “Under The Tuscan Sun”,

before we arrive in glorious Siena for a three night stay, dining

privately in an 18th Cent apartment, one of the grandest in

the city, and enjoying lunch in a Renaissance hamlet isolated

in the heart of the Tuscan countryside We stop by a collection

of modern sculpture and painting, have lunch on what must be

the prettiest terrace in Tuscany, and enjoy a private tasting of

famous Chianti wines

This is a veritable cornucopia of delights, and a chance to meet

Provence has a special identity and a soul all of its own that sets it apart from

the rest of France, its history etched into the faces of its people who have lived

a hardy life of farming and fishing We’ll meet many of those people as we make

our way along our journey, and absorb the beauty of this land that has been so

loved since the earliest times

The Lubéron is the part of Provence that was the setting for Peter Mayle’s book

“A Year In Provence,” a fertile, rolling landscape of medieval villages interspersed

with orchards, vineyards and lavender fields You’ll have the chance to bicycle

from your 5 star hotel, a converted medieval hamlet set in a 75 acre private estate,

to the village where Mayle lived, before returning for a tasting of wines from the

hotel’s own vineyards

And we’ll also do something that’s really great fun and different

– and is as much a part of the Provence of today as the sound of

crickets and the smell of lavender: we’ll stay in exotic St Tropez and

carouse for an afternoon with the jet-set over a long and lazy lunch

by the sea, at famous Club 55 on Pampelonne beach

Because Provence is not just history and ancient traditions, it’s also

a magnet for those who seek glamour and the glitter of wealth –

islands thrown like pearls across the sea

If you want to cruise that coastline then this isn’t the tour for you, but if you want to experience

a wider canvass of this remarkable region, delving into its identity, its rich and varied cultural

traditions and its complexities, then we have the ideal itinerary for you

Along the way we’ll meet a charming friend of mine who has her own lavender farm on one of the

islands, learn about local politics from a member of the Slovenian government, listen to an organ

recital in a church perched on stones in the sea and to a male choir singing cappella music, admire

the powerful sculpture of Ivan Meštrovi c and learn about the region’s fine wines which are today

wowing western Europe

We actually visit four countries on this tour, countries that have often

disastrously intermingled with each other as their political history has

unravelled, but with the help of friends and invited guest speakers I will

Each city has its own distinctive per-

sonality: I love the zing and buzz of

Budapest, with the great Danube

river flowing through it (“welcome to

Budapest!” shouted my cab driver the

first time I visited the city, as he turned

around to grin conspiratorially at me –

and drove around a corner at the same

time) And then there’s Vienna, redolent

with the atmosphere of Imperial power

that still pervades its beautifully mani-

cured streets and public buildings

As for the “Golden” city of Prague, well who cannot be moved

by its exquisite beauty and romantic allure, enhanced by our stay

at The Augustine hotel, a former monastery

And because we want to spoil you, we’re adding a fourth ‘golden’

city – the exquisite and utterly delightful Cesky Krumlov set

beside a lovely river deep in the heart of the Czech countryside

and where, the next day, you’ll be able to drink a glass of the

original Budweiser beer

But this tour isn’t all about cities – we look at the human perspective also: dining

with a leading Hungarian businessmen, paying homage to the victims of WWII,

visiting a painter’s home and listening to a University Professor who lived the Velvet

Revolution in Prague and saw Communism fall, there in his own city, in front of him

And there’s also the famed beauty of the region which we’ll enjoy, sailing up the

Danube admiring the river banks, rich in agricultural produce and framed by

medieval villages, or watching the sun set over Prague, bathing its old Charles

Later we will spend a moment in the small auberge room where Vincent lay

dying in the arms of his brother Théo, and we’ll see the house at Giverny in

which Monet knew happiness and world fame – and also the fear of blindness

In Provence we will delight under the sky that so dazzled Van Gogh, learn why

Matisse created his famous “painting with scissors”, and discover what drove

Renoir to strap his brushes to his hands with bandages

We’ll go to a show at the Moulin Rouge too, as the artists did regularly, and see

the original music hall interior in which Toulouse Lautrec immortalised the French

Can-Can and its outrageous star ‘La Goulue’

a friend of mine, one of the world’s

leading racehorse trainers, to watch as

his magnificent animals gallop through

the forest of Chantilly in scenes of an

extraordinary beauty, straight from the

drawings of Degas

You’ll meet other friends of mine too – an internationally successful American artist

who will explain the influence that Van Gogh and Gaugin play on his work; and

a true bohemian artist who will tell us how it feels to earn your living by painting

– before we all retire together with him for a good lunch in a local auberge, as

painters have always done!


These were extraordinary men, but they were also men who lived

and loved, who held dreams and raised families, who awoke in the

morning to work, and retired at night satiated And it is that insight

into the success and failure of their lives, the beauty and the trauma

of it all, that will be the memory you will treasure from this trip

also discuss their lives and how those lives determined their art

blight of commercialization has barely

touched these lands (but it’s coming,

soon), and so those of us who do visit

it are able to enjoy a rural simplicity

and a way of life that has been

handed down from generation to generation

Interestingly, HRH Prince Charles has traveled

on several occasions in this region, and has

purchased property here

Thanks to some good friends and inspired local entrepreneurs, I will be able to help you catch a

glimpse of how this enchanted region lives: we’ll be given our very own village festival where the

villagers and children serve us a luncheon feast and dance in traditional costumes, have lunch with

a priest in his garden while he describes his daily life amongst a community of farmers, spend time

with a nun who will show us around her 15th Cent church festooned with brightly coloured paint-

ings, and hear from a local politician about how the modern world is encroaching into the region

This part of Europe has known its fair share of agony too, as will be recounted to us by the President

of the Jewish community in the home of Elie Wiesel, and as we will bear witness ourselves when we

visit one of the terrifying former ‘political’ prisons for opponents of the Communist regime

At each end of the tour there will be a touch of the modern world, with accommodations at the fine

Castle Hotel Degenfeld, set amongst the vineyards of Tokaj, and the sumptuous Le Meridien hotel

in Budapest In between we drive into a rustic, honest, rural world that still has little to do with the

21st century and has retained a special, unaffected charm

ABE’s Right to DeclineABE reserves the right to decline to accept anyone on a trip, and to remove from the trip at his or her sole expense, anyone who is abusive of others or whose behavior disrupts the tour, or whose condi-tion is such that he or she could create a hazard

Dispute resolutionIf a dispute arises out of or relates to this contract, or the breach thereof, and if the dispute cannot be settled through negotiation, the parties agree first to try in good faith to settle the dispute by mediation in accordance with the International Mediation Rules of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution administered by the American Arbitration Association or, at ABE’s sole election, other American Arbitration Association rules before resorting to arbitration, litigation or some other dispute resolution procedure

Any unresolved controversy or claim arising out of or relating to this contract, or the breach thereof, shall be determined by arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in accor-dance with its International Arbitration Rules or, at ABE’s sole election, any other American Arbitration Association rules The language of the arbitration shall be English

Travel Advisories and WarningsIt is the responsibility of the traveler to become informed about the most-current travel adviso-ries and warnings by referring to the U S State Department’s travel website (http://travel state gov) or by phone at (888) 407-4747 In the event of an active State Department Travel Warning against travel to the specific location(s) of the trip, should the traveler still choose to travel, not-withstanding any travel advisory or warning, the traveler assumes all risk of personal injury, death or property damage that may arise
