    ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

    Dear Reader,

Another year gone.It has been a busy one development-wise in the Aldinga Bayarea with the new On The Run complex construction wellunder way, an application for an Aldi supermarket complex

in historic Aldinga township and further housingdevelopments in the area.

Considerable effort and resources have been put in byCouncil to improve the Esplanade. The long awaited toilet atSnapper Point, along with the playground and improved picnic facilities, have made this a delightful little hub at a point which was popular for people to access the AldingaReef and walk their dogs in a leash free area.Unfortunately run off from the Butterworth Road drain againdamaged the steps which were built there a few years backand that access to the beach is no longer available. As this is a

major access point to the beach and reef for scientific (ReefWatch being one example) as well as recreational users wehope this problem is rectified quickly.

The new shared cycling/walking path installed along theEsplanade has also been commented on in previous editorialshere and is very well accepted, well used and welcomed, Thefailure to locate it close to the cliff top, to retain the views, insome areas is still a frustrating mystery.

This issue:Advertising revenue is still down so we are restricted to 36 pages again this month.

For those of you complaining that you miss the handy lift-outcentre spread which showed all the shops at Aldinga CentralShopping Centre with their phone numbers, don’t complain to

us, get onto the Centre Management who discontinuedrunning the ad.We welcome back Kelly Harding with the ‘Talking Health’column (p 23) this month.Other regulars are still here: CFS corner, Community Centre,Library, History Corner, and On The Green columns. Ourthanks go to all these contributors for supplying thisinformation, which helps to broaden the interest level of themagazine.

    SOME HISTORY TRIVIA.

They used to use urine to tan animal skins, sofamilies used to all pee in a pot and then once a dayit was taken and sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were "piss poor", but worse than that were the really poor folk, who

couldn't even afford to buy a pot, they"Didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the

    lowest of the low.

    MARY

    CHRISTMAS IS FORGIVING

A much travelled lass for her age (Uganda, Philippines, New Zealand - and Ethiopia after Christmas) Mary foundearly in life that she had a heart of compassion.

Mary grew up in a Christian home, but as a young girlcame to the point where she said she knew her belief inGod had to be her's alone. This longish process washelped by her mother's advice that faith as small as a

mustard seed was all she needed. 'When Mum showed meone smaller than the size of a pinhead I said, 'I can handlethat!'; and I sincerely invited Christ into my life.

Not long after, Mary had a personal struggle with guiltover past mistakes - a weight she couldn't shift herself. Finally, when she realised she was unable to put everymistake 'right', Mary says she had a powerful experienceof God lifting the weight of her past. Freedom and peacefilled her heart and she truly knew, through Christ, Godhad forgiven her. From this freedom sprung a deep con-nection with God. 'It's both personal and real and my

    most treasured relationship.'

Mary's enthusiastic response was to give herself to hercause with whatever she had. When overseas, the plightof the orphan children captured her heart - so she workedin food programs, gave love, kindness, teaching, prayerand even saw miracles and healings. Apart from survival, the kids just wanted to be accepted and loved.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Mary volunteers as an advocatefor the organisation 'Compassion' which helps children in

many countries who live in extreme poverty.

This season could be a new start for many who recognise

that the Christ in Christmas is forgiving.

Aldinga - The 'Village of Aldinga' was laid out by Lewis Fidge,

farmer of Aldinga, circa 1857. Mr Felix de Caux (1822-1877),an early settler in the district (see Dingabledinga) said thatAldinga was a corruption of an Aboriginal word meaning'much water', while other sources suggest it means 'good placefor meat', 'open wide plain' or 'tree district'.

A lengthy poem entitled 'Aboriginal Nomenclature by a Native'written by an early resident of McLaren Vale contains a line

which says: 'Nal-dinga (open wide)'.Aldinga Plain was called ngalti-ngga by the Aborigines andaccordingly 'open, wide' appears to be the logical meaning of'Aldinga'.

Baudin called Aldinga Bay Ance des Curieux - 'Cove of theCurious Ones', while on Freycinet's charts it is Baie Vendonne

    Christmas Blessings

As the end of the year looms people’s thoughts turn toChristmas celebrations and gatherings.

Each year the very festive Willunga Christmas Treefestival supports the Christmas Bowl appeal. This appealhas been running for over sixty years.

The Christmas Bowl appeal began on Christmas Day1949, when a minister named Rev Frank Byatt inVictoria placed a simple empty bowl on the table beforehim. He humbly asked his friends and family tocontribute what they felt the cost of the meal had been. Rev Byatt asked that they consider their own goodfortune in being able to share a Christmas meal togetherin comfort and safety.

Our community is now invited to share God’s blessings

of love and friendship in the form of a gift to help peoplewho had fled the horrors of war as refugees. Overcoming Reflux

Reflux and indigestion affect one in ten people everyweek. It can range from mild to extremely severe.Although symptoms can be mild it can still be causingdamage to your body.

Overcoming Reflux (Continued) When you swallow, the food passes from the mouthdown a long tube called your oesophagus to yourstomach. The mechanism that your body has for allowingfood and drink to be digested should also stop food anddigestive juices from coming back up. When thishappens, the acids can begin to burn the tissue and canlead to ulceration of the tissue.

There are many things that can cause reflux or make itworse. These include eating too fast or overeating, eatingspicy or fatty foods, stress, anxiety and emotionaltrauma, smoking and drinking excessive coffee, cola oralcohol. Reflux can also occur as a symptom of moreserious conditions. This can be discussed at your nextappointment. There are many things that can reduce yourchance of suffering reflux such as; Eating smaller mealsmore frequently. Taking time to relax and enjoy aleisurely meal time. Managing stress effectively (I havesome stress management techniques that I can share withyou)

Reducing the amount of caffeine by cutting back oncoffee, tea and cola drinks. Have a break or at leastreduce alcohol consumption for a while.

Avoid taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs if possible as these increase your risk of ulcer. If these werespecifically prescribed for you, discuss yourrequirements before you stop using them. You can talk tome about effective alternative anti-inflammatories thatare gentle on your digestive system. As your NaturalHealth Practitioner I can support you in making simpledietary and lifestyle changes that will address reflux and

indigestion, Reducing or eliminating Helicobacter pylori(the bacteria associated with ulceration) and repairing thetissues of the gut. I can also provide you withsupplements specifically proven to treat these problems.

There are products that can give relief within 10 minutes. So please call and make an appointment if you wouldlike support and relief from reflux or any other of yourhealth concerns on 0885 565945.

What an exci t ing y ear!In 2015, addition to our great range of courses andclasses, we ran 3 major events. These events couldn’t hap-

pen without can-do leadership and generous volunteerswho give so willingly of their time and energy.

    Melbourne Cup Lunch

This was a first for us and what fun itwas! Our kitchen volunteers turnedon a delicious 3-course meal, our MCLyndall Moule kept the energy goingwith lots of fun andgames, and our tire-less volunteersworked all day to setup, decorate, servefood and clean up.

Everyone had a ball, even though a wifi

gremlin took over at race time! Next yearwe’ll have the NBN… Our gratefulthanks go to R’n’R Chickens of SeafordRoad who donated chicken and coleslawfor 80. The food was top quality! And what great craftskills from Jan Boyd, who made the jockey cap table cen-tres and the very cute horses!

Children’s Day  On October 30 we held a wonderful morning of fun andactivities for our little people, including the AmazingDrumming Monkeys, craft and play, a petting zoo and afree sausage sizzle. Over 600 people attended and the

     buzz was amazing!

    Bigg est Morning Tea

In support of members of our community who are dealingwith cancer, we held a fundraiser for the Cancer Councilin May. It was a great morning with amazing entertain-ment from Tatachilla College. Around 90 people attendedand we raised $1177, testament to the generosity of theAldinga community.

Opening t imes JanuaryOur office will be open 9-12 pm from Mon 18th to Fri29th Jan for enrolments and enquiries. Classes com-mence 1st Feb—wood groups may begin in January.Last day this year is 11th December.

FINALLY—A DESPERATE PLEA FOR MORE WOOLFOR OUR YARNING GROUP. PLEASE SEARCH YOUR CUPBOARDS—DROP INTO

    THE OFFICE. THANK YOU!

    MORE HISTORY TRIVIA

In the 1550’s Baths consisted of a bigtub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilegeof the nice clean water, then all theother sons and men, then the women and finally thechildren.Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty youcould actually lose someone in it.

You lovers of the Englishlanguage might enjoy this .There is a two-letter word thatperhaps has more meaningsthan any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.'It's easy to understand UP, meaningtoward the sky or at the top of thelist, but when we awaken in themorning, why do we wake UP?At a meeting, why does a topiccome UP?Why do we speak UP and why arethe officers UP for election and whyis it UP to the secretary to write UP areport? We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP aroom, polish UP the silver; wewarm UP the leftovers and clean UP

the kitchen. We lock UP the house and someguys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word hasreally special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP fortickets, work UP an appetite, andthink UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to bedressed UP is special.A drain must be opened UP becauseit is blocked UP.

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night
