It’s commonly said that one only discovers his true friends during times of trouble and that goes for countries too. Today, the Egyptian government is battling a Muslim Brotherhood-led insurgency that, if permitted to succeed, could hurtle the nation into civil war. A disgruntled minority has resorted to violence to hold the majority hostage. This past month has witnessed an increase in bombings targeting the police, allegedly carried out by Ansar Bait el-Maqdis, a terrorist group allied to the Brotherhood, believed to have been funded by its former deputy supreme guide Khairat el-Shater.

When Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah met with US Secretary-of-State John Kerry in November, he stressed that Egypt is too important to fail, which is one reason why the Kingdom, together with the UAE and Kuwait, have lent diplomatic and financial backing to the transitional authority. Needless to say I was extremely disturbed to read a report in Al Khaleej published on January 30, about a recent meeting between Qatari, Turkish and Israeli intelligence services that allegedly met to discuss how those countries can best support the outlawed Brotherhood.

The report further highlights the stance of the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is apparently keen to ensure that the Muslim Brotherhood continues to be funded via sacrosanct

diplomatic pouches, given that the assets and bank accounts of at least 702 of its leaders and over 1,000 Brotherhood-affiliated NGOs have been frozen. The supply of weapons and artillery enabling the Brotherhood to foment even greater chaos and bloodshed was also discussed.

If proven to be factual, this news is serious cause for alarm. The idea that a cabal of foreign intelligence agents have come together to cook-up plots against an Arab nation struggling to regain its footing, is beyond belief. The only actor missing from this axis is Iran, whose involvement would automatically render the grouping a lethal enemy to all moderate Arab nations. Such solidarity with the Muslim Brotherhood, that spawned Hamas, the Egyptian Islamic Jihad and served as inspiration to leaders of Al Qaeda, on the part of Qatar and Turkey in collaboration with Israel, is impossible to accurately analyse.

Al Watan has reported Erdogan’s hosting of global Muslim Brotherhood conferences on Turkish soil, designed to undermine the Egyptian government. The beleaguered Turkish leader, whose own grip on power is now shaky, has unashamedly embraced the Brotherhood, going as far as to flash the ‘Rabaa’ hand sign. Clearly he is personally invested on an ideological level and is uncaring that his anti-Egypt tongue-lashings have been detrimental to Turkish-Egyptian trade and investment

not reports that it is colluding with Turkey and Israel against Egypt are true. And if Qatar cares about the unity of Gulf States, it should show good faith by putting Qaradawi and his cohorts on a plane to Cairo and bring an immediate halt to the vicious broadcasts from Al Jazeera against our beloved Egypt, the cradle of Arabism, whose sons have

unstintingly given their blood during wars to preserve the dignity of our Arab Ummah.

Lastly, I would urge the Qatari leadership not to sacrifice its good relations with neighbours in favour of a failed organisation that is gasping its dying breaths within Egypt and will soon wither away globally. I pray that our Qatari

brothers will realise that supporting the Brotherhood is a lost cause. Instead, they would do well to remember that we who are privileged to live around the Arabian Gulf are interwoven as one family, one body - and, God willing, we will always remain so.

– and have resulted in the downgrading of diplomatic relations.

Israel is no fan of Islamists and is known to be cooperating closely with the Egyptian military to rid the Sinai Peninsula of armed radicals. It’s known, too, that the Israeli government petitioned the US President against instituting punitive measures against Egypt. Does Israel fear a resurgence of Arab nationalism if and when an adored military man, who’s being likened to Jamal Abdel-Nasser, becomes president? Or is Israel merely playing both sides in an endeavour to keep Egypt on its knees?

Qatar’s hostile position towards Egypt is even harder to fathom. It’s no secret that once warm relations between Cairo and Doha descended to freezing point over the toppling of Mohamed Morsi, whose government was the recipient of a US$ 7.5 billion Qatari aid package, now in the process of being returned. Last month, Egypt’s Foreign Office summoned the Qatari ambassador following a statement from Doha describing the decision to label the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist as “a prelude to a shoot-to-kill policy”.

I know of Qatar’s former ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa, and I know the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim on a personal level and would love to know whether they and the current emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad are truly aware of what’s happening.

For instance, do they know that Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Doha’s revered guest, has launched verbal attacks against the UAE, which has always backed its sister nation Qatar, and more recently against Saudi? Are they aware that Al Jazeera is feting Muslim Brotherhood leaders holed up in five-star hotels at the network’s expense? If they’re not aware, then that’s a problem. If they are, that’s an even bigger problem. Why is Al Jazeera being permitted to destroy its journalistic integrity with its relentless bashing of the Egyptian government and interviews with Muslim Brotherhood spokespersons masquerading as academics? And why is Qatar refusing to comply with Egypt’s legitimate request to extradite Qaradawi, wanted for inciting the killing of Egyptian security forces.

To say that I’m disappointed at Qatar’s pro-Brotherhood position would be an understatement. The GCC should require the Qatari government to reverse course because one member’s country’s actions negatively impact the entire body. Qatar should clarify whether or

What an inspirational figure US President Barack Obama once was! He rode on a wave of positive change. His hope-filled rhetoric was spell-binding. I was convinced that he was the genuine article, a compassionate human being resolved to win hearts and minds within and without his nation’s borders - the opposite of his predecessor, George W. Bush, whose aggressive foreign policies soiled America’s reputation as a force for good.

Many of those who rooted for Obama in 2008 forgave him his failure to fulfil most of his pre-election promises - his pledge to close Guantanamo, to bring about a Palestinian state, withdraw troops from Afghanistan by mid-2011 and reach out to the Arab world - as US presidents tend to towards caution during their first terms with an eye on re-election.

Once the shackles were loosened during Obama’s second term, we counted upon him to do what’s right. We were wrong. Drone attacks on Afghanistan and Pakistan that sever the lives of civilians are on-going. The Palestinian-Israeli peace process is nothing but a behind-closed-doors PR farce to cover expanding Jewish colonies on the West Bank. And, rather than guide his nation closer to America’s allies in the Middle East and Gulf, Obama’s decisions have pushed Saudi Arabia, Egypt and even its Middle-East proxy, Israel, to seek greater self-reliance.

The American people are disappointed, too for reasons of their own. Today, Obama’s domestic approval rating, according to a Gallup poll, stands at just 39 per cent, several points lower than that of President Bush at the same stage of his presidency.

It seems Obama lacks the courage of his convictions and has been dubbed by newspapers as “Ditherer-in-Chief”. But does he really suffer from hesitancy or confused thinking? Or, are those ‘personality traits’ deliberately contrived as a facade to hide a murky foreign policy agenda – or even a personal ideology - from the American people and US allies?

I have no interest in conspiracy theories and I’m not inclined to point a finger without being sure of my facts. However, I’m flabbergasted by some of Obama’s twist and turns in recent months that have shocked and dismayed America’s long time regional partners.

For instance, why does the White House regularly criticise the Egyptian government when it was virtually silent over Morsi’s litany of authoritarian edicts and crackdowns on protestors last winter? When Representatives Michelle Bachman, Steve King and Louie Gohmert visited Cairo in September, they addressed the Egyptian people, saying, “We are here as members of Congress to say we are with you, we encourage you because together we are going through the same suffering – the

Muslim Brotherhood and headed by the Deputy-Head of a Hamas fund-raising organisation? More to the point, why has the mainstream media shied away from investigating this?

Secondly, did the Obama Administration secretly fund the Muslim Brotherhood’s political campaigning in Egypt as announced on various Egyptian television networks – and if so, why? Saad el-Shater, the son of Khairat el-Shater, a senior MB leader, told a news agency in Anatolia that his family “has

suddenly America’s new best friend, never mind that in the process the US is seriously jeopardizing its relationship with Israel, previously believed to be

off-limits. Never before has a US leader U-turned so dramatically while snubbing Israel’s security concerns in the process.

Questions of crucial importance to Saudi Arabia and Gulf States are:

• Why did Obama step-back from military action to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons capabilities at the last minute, thus abandoning the Syrian people to their fate and leaving the Free Syrian Army he claimed to support high and dry?

• Why is Obama prepared to alienate trusted American allies, such as Saudi Arabia and Israel, in order to leave the Assad regime in place and fortify US relations with its backers - the Islamic Republic of Iran? What act of good faith has Iran displayed to grant it entry into the community of nations when nothing has changed in-country apart from a fresh face in the number two slot?

• What drove Obama to threaten use of his veto to halt a bi-partisan Senate bill aimed at imposing more sanctions on Iran on December 19th, especially when great swathes of Congress oppose any cosy detente with Tehran?

Unfortunately, we may never be privy to the realities behind the scenes. Is it even conceivable that the US President’s sympathies could lie with the Muslim Brotherhood and its Shiite ally Iran that’s provided safe haven for Al Qaeda terrorists? That’s almost beyond belief, which is probably why those allegations haven’t hit the headlines.

However, given our region’s vulnerabilities and the chameleon nature of this White House, we must be alert to all possibilities. I trust our intelligence agencies are working behind the scenes to find clarity within the fog of suspicion for the benefit of Arabs and Westerners alike.

Thirdly, is former US Rep. Allen West right in claiming that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated the Obama Administration? In June 2012, West urged the President to repudiate the Brotherhood and later wrote on Facebook: “We do have Muslim Brotherhood affiliated groups and individuals infiltrated into this current Obama Administration?” If, indeed, the White House is occupied or influenced by the MB, it’s no wonder Iran is

Americans shudder at the very word terrorism, yet although Egypt has been plagued by terrorist attacks since Morsi’s toppling on July 3rd by public demand, the US, which says it supports “the will of the people”, has seen fit to punish and condemn the largest Arab nation for its attempts to rein-in violence. In this connection, there are important questions that require answering:

The former US President and his wife were in the region in January 2014, with a delegation from the Carter Center as part of their efforts to help drive peace in the Middle East. President and Mrs. Carter arrived in Dubai for a 24-hour visit on invitation of Mr. Al Habtoor. President and Mrs. Carter stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah, the latest addition to the Al Habtoor Group’s growing portfolio. They were among the first high-profile guests at the luxury five-star hotel - which recently opened its doors to the public.

President and Mrs. Carter held a closed-door meeting with Khalaf Al Habtoor at his office on Al Wasl Road. The meeting was followed by talks with Carter Center staff, which included John B Hardman (MP) - President and CEO, Hrair Balian - Director, Conflict Resolution Program, Curtis Kohlhaas

- Chief Development Officer and Beth Davis Scheduler, from the Carter Center. Present from the Al Habtoor Group were Sultan Al Habtoor, President, Al Habtoor Motors, Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice Chairman and CEO, Al Habtoor Group, Ahmad Al Habtoor, CEO, Al Habtoor Motors, and Paul Rayner - Advisor to the Chairman of the Group. The high-profile guests discussed the ongoing cooperation between the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation and The Carter Center. They thanked Al Habtoor for his valued contribution towards efforts to finding a peaceful resolution of differences between the Palestinians and Israelis. They also discussed regional issues including

Lebanon and Syria as well as global issues and the US policy towards the Middle East.

wrote the Foreword. He praised Mr. Al Habtoor on the autobiography becoming research material for educational purposes. The Preface and first two chapters of ‘Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor - the Autobiography’ are to be used as part of the syllabus at Zayed University in Dubai.

President Carter, who was the 39th President of the United States of America, also congratulated Mr. Al Habtoor on Dubai’s recent success to host the Expo 2020 - beating off the likes of Russia, Turkey and Brazil.

The President said, “I hope I get the chance to visit Dubai then. I will be 96 in 2020.”

Al Habtoor is a big supporter of the US-based Carter Center, which is led by President Jimmy Carter. The Center seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy and alleviate human suffering. Al Habtoor is one of the Center’s ‘Donors with Cumulative Lifetime Giving of $1 million and above.’ His donations help to support The Carter Center efforts to promote the peace process in Palestine.

The President reiterated thanks for Mr. Al Habtoor’s ongoing cooperation between the ‘Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation’ and The Carter Center and thanked him for his hospitality. He told Mr. Al Habtoor that he wanted to hear his opinion on pushing through the Middle East Peace Process and said, “Depending on your direction we will shape The Carter Center’s policies for the future.”Al Habtoor added, “I am always ready to support such important causes. We will not relent and ensure there is adequate funding to find a lasting solution. I urge everyone to donate whatever they can to help mankind. Al Habtoor stressed the need for a two-state solution and for unity among all the Palestinian parties. He added, “I suggest The Carter Center put more pressure on the Israelis because they are the stronger side. The Palestinian cause is very important to us.”


Exclusive Interview:

PresidentJimmy CarterPresident Jimmy Carter recently visited Dubai, accompanied by his wife, en route to a Carter Center mission in the troubled Sudan. The former President of the United States spoke exclusively to Joanna Andrews about what concerns him most about the world today.

Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States of America. He served from 1977 to 1981. In those four years he achieved significant accomplishments on foreign policy including the Panama Canal treaties, the SALT II treaty with the former Soviet Union, the Camp David Accords, the treaty between Egypt and Israel - not to mention his many other domestic accomplishments.

“When I was elected President, Egypt and Israel had been at war four times in the previous 25 years and I was determined to bring peace to the Holy Land,” he reminisces. “I knew that none of my subordinates could do it; the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of State. It had to be the full personal influence of the President of the United States, so I decided to get the top leaders of Egypt and Israel together with me.“

On September 17, 1978 after 13 days of ‘secret’ negotiations, President Carter brokered the Camp David Accord which was signed by the then President of Egypt Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. A second framework, one year later, led to the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.

“We invited the Palestinians, we invited the Jordanians, but they were under tremendous pressure from the Arab countries, so they couldn’t come. But, Sadat was courageous enough to do so,” he adds.

The former President attributes the success to the two very courageous

leaders. “I used the full influence of my own Presidential Office and the power of the United States to propose solutions that neither Egypt or Israel liked but they didn’t want to displease me, and they didn’t want to be exposed to the world as being the obstacle to peace,” he says.

At the time there was criticism from some quarters of society over the lack of a Palestinian presence. Carter says the former Palestinian President later expressed regret for not attending. “Yasser Arafat came and told me that one of the worst mistakes he made was not coming to Camp David.”

The agreement eventually resulted in a Nobel Peace Prize for Carter ‘for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development’.

He says winning a Nobel Peace Prize reinforced his belief in what he was doing. “What that did was to recognise the work that The Carter Center has done since I left the White House.”

A Champion for PeaceToday, Jimmy Carter is known

throughout the world as a champion for human rights. In 1982, less than a year after he left office, he set up The Carter Center along with his wife Rosalynn. The non-government, non-profit organisation works in partnership with Emory University to advance human

one in the world.” While in Khartoum he

put pressure on President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir - who he has known since before Al-Bashir took office - to promote harmony and peace in the troubled parts of the country. President Carter says they put forward a proposal “to help with the reconciliation in Sudan, the writing of a new constitution, and the future holding of an honest election.”

A Solution for Syria?

Carter is active in many parts of the world, including Syria. And, he is not shy to have his voice heard. He recently co-wrote an ‘op-ed’ in the Washington Post, under the headline - Time to be bold and make peace in Syria.

‘During the past 2½ years, 100,000 more Syrians have died, more than 2 million Syrians have fled the country as refugees and 6 million Syrians have been internally displaced,’ he writes. ‘The war among Syria’s many sectarian groups has become more brutal, and some neighboring countries are even more deeply involved in trying to help one side or the other prevail. It is time to ask why the calls for peace have been fruitless.’

rights, alleviate human suffering, prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health. I asked the former president why he and his wife devote so much of their time to improve the state of the world in some of the most dangerous regions.

“Rosalynn and I find our work at The Carter Center primarily to be very gratifying and unpredictable and adventurous, it adds excitement to our lives,” he says.

“We grew up in a community that everybody helped each other,” he adds. “I got very well acquainted, when I was a child, with the African-American community. All my neighbours were black people and so I was immersed with them as a child and through my teenage years.

“When I got into politics as a state Senator, later as a Governor, and then as President I could see the need of people around the world, and how much of a disparity there was,” he says. “So, after I left the White House we formed the Carter Center. We now have programmes in 73 countries… about half of those are in Africa where the need is greatest. We have learned that they are just as hard working, just as dedicated, just as ambitious, and their family values are just as good as ours; they just need a chance in life,” he says.

Saving Sudan In March last year The Carter Center

launched a series of dialogues between prominent leaders from Sudan and South Sudan, aimed at strengthening peace and creating lasting understanding between the two countries. The Carter’s spent several days in Sudan in January 2014 to give a further push to peace efforts in the war-torn country.

“We have been going to Sudan pretty regularly, ever since 1988, and we’ve tried to bring peace first of all when North and South were at war,” he says. “We were involved deeply in the elections in North and South Sudan, and then with the referendum in South Sudan, and we helped to form the new government, a new nation in South Sudan, the newest

destruction in Syria, I ask? “I think that in order to solve a problem as complicated as Syria, the solution is to get top leaders to sit down with all the factions that can have a role in bringing about an agreement and let them all participate. If you exclude key parties and also try to ordain in advance what they have to agree to accept that is preconditions, then that almost guarantees that you are going to fail.” He pauses and then says, “I would personally like to see Iran participate.”

Misinterpreting the FactsThe 86-year-old former president is not

one to sit idle. To date, he was written 28 books on everything from international affairs, current affairs, theology and even fiction. His latest book, A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power, due out on March 25, is an account on the worldwide abuse of women and girls. He says that in spite of the all the work he does all over the world, his biggest concern right now “is the abuse and deprivation of equal rights of women and girls.”

He adds, “This is based on two major

factors that are very difficult and very important; one is the misinterpretation of the Holy Scriptures; in the Koran and the Bible… And, the other one is a general turning of the international community towards violence, away from what we hoped to achieve when the United Nations was formed and all the countries agreed not to start wars on their own but to go through United Nations to resolve differences. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is basically being ignored in dealing with women and girls and secondly the countries are too willing to go to war on their own.”

Carter says that unfortunately people across all faiths tend to misinterpret the scriptures to the detriment of women. “What happens is the Christian and Islamic leaders, just to take two religions, who are all men, they interpret the Koran and they interpret the Holy Bible to

make sure that they pick out verses that lead them to believe women should be excluded from an equal participation.

“My Church has a female pastor, but in some of the Baptist Churches they don’t permit female pastors, they don’t even permit a woman to teach boys in a classroom and of course the Catholic Church says that a woman can’t be a priest or a deacon, well I think that those are mistakes. But, that’s the interpretation of men leaders who chose verses in the Holy Scriptures that perpetuate them and don’t have women challenge them for the top positions.”

In his ‘spare’ time he keeps busy doing multiple creative tasks. “When I am writing a book and I have a few days at home I get tired of the computer, I go 20 steps to my woodshop, I build furniture, and I paint pictures. I am a fairly good artist. My wife and I are bird watchers and we spend a lot time with our family so we have a very diverse life and we’ve been blessed with good health, so until we are constricted mentally or physically I hope my enjoyment will come from just having a life that is adventurous and unpredictable and gratifying.”

Peace Prize today? “I prefer not to name individuals but I would say those who have taken a courageous stand to promote

peace in spite of very difficult challenges, people like Ladkhar Brahimi now who is negotiating a peace in Syria. I think John Kerry has taken an initiative that was lacking in my country in trying to bring peace between

Israel and the Palestinians but if they prove to be successful in their effort then I would like to see them recognised.”

On March 7, 2014 a one-day National Summit will bring together in Washington, DC, a group of Americans concerned about the plight of Arabs in general and Palestinians in particular. None of the people organising the event have Arab ancestry, but for many years all have focused their time and energy working on behalf of cordial relations and mutual understanding between the Arab people of the Middle East and the citizens of the United States. For most of them, this devotion has been sustained for half a century.

The sponsoring organisations are the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, a superb bimonthly magazine founded in 1982 by two retired US Foreign Service Officers, Ambassador Andrew Killgore and Richard H. Curtiss, and three activist organisations: the Council for the National Interest [CNI], which I helped organise in 1985; If Americans Knew, founded in 2001 and led by Alison Weir, an investigative journalist who now also directs CNI; and the Institute for Research: Middle Eastern Policy (IRmep).

My involvement with the Middle East began in constituent service. In April 1976, as a US congressman from Illinois, I decided I had to travel to South Yemen to seek the release of a young constituent, Ed Franklin, who was serving a five-year prison sentence on a trumped-up charge of spying. At that time, I could not recall meeting a single Arab in my constituency.

While preparing for the trip, Dr. John Duke Anthony (later to found and direct the National Council on US-Arab Relations) came to my office on Capitol Hill to brief me on life in South Yemen. He was an established expert on the Middle East and one of the few Americans to have visited South Yemen in the past decade. He eased my concern on several points. For example, the State Department had warned me that South Yemen was the most radical of Arab states.

Anthony predicted the warm

reception I later experienced. I secured Franklin’s release and departed South Yemen with him in my custody. Changing planes at Beirut, I met Richard H. Curtiss for the first time. He was on the staff of the US Embassy there and arranged a press interview to discuss my rescue of Franklin.

The trip was an eye-opener. For the first time, I discovered that Arabs are normal human beings, not

terrorists. I listened to their grievances against America and Israel.

Ten years later, Anthony re-entered my life when he decided to establish the National Council on US-Arab Relations. I sat with him

and his close associates who formed the council. We remain good friends.

Curtiss became one of my most cherished friends as the editor of the Washington Report magazine. His passing in 2013 was also a hard blow to Killgore, who once told me, “I could always think better when Dick sat

already a veteran on the Washington Report staff, picked up her father’s editorial reins and now shares them with Janet McMahon, also a veteran staff member.

McMahon began her career with the Washington Report 25 years ago, after an unusual personal pilgrimage that began with her decision to quit smoking. She decided to invest the money she previously had spent on cigarettes in the Save the Children Fund. This led her to an acquaintance with the challenges faced by a young Arab girl in South Lebanon named Renee. That experience caused her to learn more about Arabs and rethink her views on Zionism. While studying Arabic in Portland, Oregon, prior to attending the American University in Cairo, she learned about the Washington Report and signed on when a staff opening occurred upon her return from Cairo.

My friendship with Ambassador Killgore began in 1984, when my book, They Dare to Speak Out, was ready for

publication and the Killgore-Curtiss publication, founded two years earlier, had progressed from a modest eight-page monthly newsletter to a splendid full-colour magazine.

From a flurry of mail, I soon sensed the need for an activist organisation, the Council for the National Interest, which would reach beyond the American Arab community. The Killgore-Curtiss partnership helped CNI through its birth pangs.

Curtiss lived to see the magazine reach full throttle, by any test the finest US magazine on Middle East affairs. Since Curtiss’s death, Killgore - now 94 - remains at work in the magazine’s offices, busy full time as publisher. He had a major role in organising the National Summit.

Former US Senator James G. Abourezk was distressed that a long-standing obligation keeps him from attending the March 7 event. He and I became closely acquainted while we were both in Congress. As founder and first leader of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, he invited me to speak at its initial convention in Detroit in 1980. ADC sponsored my principal nationwide book promotion schedule in 1986. Abourezk remains on the National Board of Directors of CNI and ADC.

IRmep’s Grant Smith, one of the planners of the National Summit, is deeply committed to Arab human rights, and became a friend and colleague during my drafting of Arab-related books beginning in 2000.

Attending the summit will be my longtime friend, Eugene Bird, who ably headed CNI for years. His wife, Jerri Bird, now deceased, organised Partners for Peace in Washington, a busy umbrella group that served a dozen separate organisations.

Among my friends who continue to campaign for Arab human rights are many citizens in Arab countries, notably Dr. Khalaf (Ahmad) Al Habtoor, philanthropist and businessman in Dubai. I am certain my acquaintances are but a tiny fraction of people of all nationalities and religious affiliations who proudly and bravely carry the flag for universal human rights.

This former Direc-tor of Vice President Al Gore’s Office and a senior Democratic strategist to the 2008 and 2012 Obama presiden-tial campaigns is quick thinking, fast-talking, possessing not only an insight-ful mind but also an easy-going charm.

Dubai needs to get back to fundamentals

Reid’s admiration for Dubai’s lifestyle and trajectory was evident from the get-go. However, he believes Dubai “needs to get back to fundamentals” rather than concentrate on ‘niche tourism’, citing Las Vegas that came to the realisation that there was a bigger opportunity in family entertainment. “Dubai is never going to be a financial hub,” he says, “but it can be tourist capital of the region and Expo2020 offers a chance to invest in long-term, sustainable projects

that fit into Dubai’s overall context.”

The United States of ConfusionEarlier this year during the largely

bipartisan row over the US government shut-down, Reid dubbed his country “The United States of Confusion”. What drove him to such a scathing conclusion?

“Congress wasn’t doing its job; the White House wasn’t doing things the right way.” Lawmakers eventually agreed to extend government spending to January 15 2014, but Morris Reid says he is pessimistic there’ll be a repeat performance. “I think there will be the same fight as earlier because the Tea Party and people like Republican Senator Ted Cruz are putting their personal interests before the country. I never thought I would see the day when Republicans would turn their back on the nation and harm the economy.”

right. The stock market has reached new heights but no one wants to give him credit. He rescued the auto industry, one of America’s most fundamental, yet some call that government interference. And by sheer luck or otherwise, America’s energy policy is transforming on his watch and it’s 100 per cent his doing that we’re exporting gas.”

He adds, “On the flip side, there are opportunities he’s missed and for that he’s receiving less enthusiastic support. One is his failure to cut tax rates early on when he had political capital. He also missed encouraging American companies keeping their capital offshore to repatriate those funds, for instance, with a one-time tax-free opportunity. His health care bill is another missed opportunity. For the way it rolled-out someone needs to be fired. And that is a White House problem; they don’t know how to fire people. They should have tested and re-tested the website, but they blew it and this will be a set-back slowing down the program.”

and is Edward Snowden a traitor or a courageous whistleblower?”, I asked.“Snowden is a traitor. What he did is treason. He should be brought back to the US as a bad guy who needs to be punished. Countries are never going to stop spying on each other; it’s just a fact of life and the only time there’s a problem is when we’re caught. The spying program has been successful. There hasn’t been another terrorist attack on American soil (since September 11, 2001), so we’re doing something right. I am a proponent of spying and I’m unapologetic about it. The idea that so many world leaders are shocked is so much baloney.”

This region is importantThere’s a geopolitical buzz that the

US is shifting its priorities away from the Middle East in favour of South-East Asia and the Far East partly due to the fact that America is now self-sufficient in oil and gas due to the development of shale. “I think this is correct,” says Morris Reid. “Everyone is up in arms about this but this region is important and will remain so as Japan and Europe will continue to rely on

its resources; so the US will always be supportive but America has to focus on its own priorities. I think this is a good time for the Middle East to refocus on renewable energy and in that way oil and gas-rich countries can export their natural resources and get involved in downstream plastics as an ancillary business; perhaps also turning their attention to the African market.

Iran will never become a strategic US partnerI asked Mr. Reid whether he supported the interim pact between the P5 + 1 nations and Iran relating to the curtailment and monitoring of Tehran’s nuclear ambitions - and whether Obama will receive the necessary Congressional approval to lift all anti-Iranian sanctions given objections from Israel and Saudi Arabia.

“I am not bullish on this. Actually, Obama and his team are looking for a win but I think the deal will fall apart. In any case, as America engages with Iran, it will be more dependent on the GCC. Iran will never become a strategic US partner. It will never be an ally. We will always mistrust the Iranians and Morris L. Reid

depend on Saudi and Gulf States for backdoor information. This may be the way the Gulf will re-engage as the US pivots towards Asia. Also, there is no way the hardliners in Congress will do anything to help Iran whatever the Administration wants to do. That’s a red line, one because of Israel - the US will never let anything happen to Israel - but also because Iran has been a cancer on this region. It’s a bad actor. Getting nuclear weapons off the table is a good move but they are still bad actors with a disruptive influence on Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere.

Are Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States correct in fearing some kind of ‘grand bargain’ between the US and Iran that would undermine their own leverage and bolster Iran’s regional hegemonic stratus?,” I asked.

“The Saudis are doing the right thing by going on record and being vocal about their opposition to the deal; America would be upset if Saudi Arabia entered into a grand bargain with, say, China. Saudi should look how to maximise this to its own advantage. The Saudi-US relationship has been too much one way with America dictating to the region. At the end of the day, Saudi is unhappy and must speak-up with its own loud voice.”

I have no hope for Geneva-IIWas Obama right to step-back from

“It was very bad staffing advice; they should never have gone on record to say Obama would do this. When David Cameron lost the vote in the British Parliament, America was undermined. That was a rookie move. I have no hope for Geneva-II. Everyone is really

worried about what happens when the Syrian leadership topples. Look what’s going on in Libya. There’s real concern. The only people who can solve this are the GCC leaders because

what happens in Syria has a direct correlation with their own economies. The GCC should step up to solve this problem with all options on the table; they have weapons and technology - and America can’t fight their wars any longer.”

No honest brokerMorris Reid is similarly pessimistic

concerning the outcome of the current US-brokered Israel-Palestine peace talks. “There’s no hope and there never will be as long as Israel has double standards - Israel can do what it likes and the Palestinians will fall into line - and there’s no honest broker.”

We were wrong to cut aid to Egypt

“There are always disagreements between the White House and other agencies. We were wrong to cut the aid to Egypt. People there are fundamentally questioning ‘Are you with us. If you are with us you have to be with us through thick and thin’. Egyptians are saying, ‘Why doesn’t America stand by us like the Russians are standing with Syria?’ Egypt is a friend and an ally. We should stop picking leaderships. We need to engage appropriately, rather than taking decisions on the basis of democracy should be one-size fits all.”

Hilary for PresidentWould you back Hilary Clinton if she

decides to run for President in 2016?“It would be my pleasure to support

Hilary. Hilary and Bill are unbelievable. They’re both highly political and bring credibility to the table; they’ll be able to usher-in a new renaissance to America - and I think America needs that right now.”

Professor the Right Reverend Lord Harries of Pentregarth wears many hats. He is a retired Bishop of the Church of England. Before that he had an army career with the Royal Corp of Signals. He was made deacon in 1963, and was ordained a priest the following year - eventually becoming the 41st Bishop of Oxford (1987-2006). He was previously the Dean of King's College London, and a Fellow and an Honorary Professor of Theology. But he has many other feathers in his cap - including penning many books and writing articles on everything from religion, politics to art. In 2006 he was made a Life Peer as ‘Lord Harries of Pentregarth of Ceinewydd’ in the County of Dyfed and sits on the crossbenches is the House of Lords.

Lord Harries, who may occasionally be accused of being a controversial figure, is arguably one of the most forward thinking intellectuals in the Church of England. He is willing to go out on a limb to speak out about social, political and inter-faith issues that affect us all today.

Despite many reports the world over about a rise in Islamophobia or anti-

Semitism, Lord Harries is quick to point out that he feels “very positive about inter-faith relations in Great Britain today.” He attributes this to the “very good relationships between Christian leaders and the leaders of other faith communities.”

He gives a recent example of how inter-religious collaboration paid off. “A few years ago, when there were major riots in some of our northern cities like Bradford and Burnley, the fact that there were very close relationships between Christian leaders, the Anglican Bishop, and the Muslim leaders, meant that those riots never got totally

out of hand and they brought order, and calmness in a relatively short period of time.”

He gives another example. “At the time of the Iraq War, in Oxford, when I was Bishop of Oxford - when tensions were running very, very high - we had a wonderful inter-faith ‘Peace March’ which began in the Synagogue with prayers, it moved to the University Church (the Christian Church) with more prayers, and it ended up at the Mosque with readings from the Koran and characteristic hospitality. We

had several hundred people walking through the streets of Oxford each carrying a white balloon - a wonderfully impressive symbol of inter-faith people working together at time of increased tension.”

Islamophobia He admits there are still problems

that need resolving, like ‘pockets’ of Islamophobia in Britain, particularly post 9/11 and the July 2005 London bombing which saw a backlash of attacks against the Muslim community. However, Lord Harries adds, “I think that Islamophobia is still there and still needs to be watched… I don’t myself think it is increasing, I am not aware that it is, but it is certainly there and this is basically driven by the kind of perception which is too often given of Islam through our newspapers.”

He says, “If there was a terrorist attack, as there was in the London underground a few years ago, this of course immediately colours the whole picture in a very negative way and people don’t realise that the vast majority of Muslims in this country and abroad totally distance themselves from that sort of thing.”

Lord Harries says that more often than not the media tends to paint religion in a bad light; often portraying it in the idiom of confrontation and

disharmony. He would like to see all faiths represented in the press for the ‘good’ they do instead. But sadly, this doesn’t make the news.

“Islam at its heart is a very peaceful religion,” he says. “But, the trouble is that the work of a few unrepresented extremists’ feeds into the national consciousness and the papers haven’t always been very responsible about conveying the peaceful side, which totally outweighs those kinds of terrorist acts.”

He says he saw a “very significant turning point” following the 2013 murder of British soldier Lee Rigby. “He was murdered in the streets in broad daylight in a very kind of brutal barbaric attack by somebody who claimed to be speaking for Islam. What was significant about that is that it was immediately strongly condemned by every leading Muslim organisation in the country - without any equivocation or qualification.”

Finding an IdentityThe former Bishop of Oxford believes

one of the key problems right now is the fact that people in England are struggling to find their identity. “There is quite a lot of strong anti-Europe feeling, and very often this anti-Europe feeling coexists in people with fears about Islam. It is part of the fear of ‘the other,’ and I think this is partly related to the fact that the English (and I don’t mean the Welsh, Scottish or Irish), are slightly groping for an identity at the

moment. “For 300 years, to be English was to

be a British Imperialist. England no longer has an Empire,” he says. “I think that the English are trying to discover what it is to be English. There has been an emergency of flags of St.George for example… It is part of this insecurity about what it is to be really English in the modern world and part of that insecurity I think is expressing itself first of all in an anti-Europe feeling and secondly in a anti-‘other’ religion point of view.”

He says a lot of the fear stems from ignorance, or a lack of education about different faiths, “Education is a key component of ensuring a healthy society as far as inter-faith relations are concerned. And we are not very good at that at the moment.

“As far as Christianity is concerned, there is huge ignorance about what the Christian faith is in our society and there is also ignorance about Islam and distorted views of Islam,” he adds.

And it is not just a question about finding an identity; it appears also to be an issue of a lack of faith. Lord Harries says there are a rising number of people in Britain today who have no faith. “The opinion polls show a great rise in the number of people in this country who define themselves as having no religion at all. This is part of a long historical process. I think it goes back to the 18th century and it speeded up in the 1960s… The fact of the matter is there are now a very high percentage of people growing

up in this country who have no living contact with the Christian faith at all and the church has to find new ways of trying to relate to people.

“The picture is not wholly gloomy,” he says. “Congregations of cathedrals are growing. The congregation diocese of London is apparently growing. Congregations of the black-led minority churches are growing. So it is not a wholly negative picture. But, there is a huge challenge, and the churches simply have to come up with new, more imaginative ways of reaching out to people that have no contact with the church, and are therefore growing up in ignorance of what it is.”

He adds, “One of the reasons why cathedral congregations are growing is because of the very high standard of music and a higher standard of preaching, so people are drawn by excellence.”

A Multi-Cultural World“A pluralistic society is a fact of life,

and we need to face up to that,” he warns. “When I travel on the London Underground, I look around. First of all everyone else is much younger than I am! And the vast majority of them are a very difficult colour from me. In London, of course, we rejoice in that.

“I basically think it is fundamentally enriching to live in a society with other cultures and other religions and through interaction with them there is a mutually learning process,” he concludes.

Welcome the Year of the

HorseThe CLSA Feng Shui Index is a

light hearted prediction for the coming year, with a particular focus on Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index (HSI), key market sectors, world leaders and celebrities – including US Federal Reserve Chair apparent Janet Yellen and this years’ football capital Rio de Janeiro – host of the FIFA World Cup.

“Positive, powerful and race-paced - there’s much to like about the Horse,” the report says. “It’s also well positioned: At No.7 in the zodiac, the Horse kicks off the second half of the 12-year cycle.”

It goes on to say, “Traditionally, the vital force or energy known as ‘qi’ is considered to be spent or stale half-way through a cycle - the Horse heralds the arrival of the so-called second wind - a burst of invigorating fresh qi.”

CLSA predicts a lot of fire for the year of the wood horse, which started on January 31, 2014. It says fire bodes well for stock markets as it is considered a ‘lucky’ element, “Fire is the intrinsic element that’s widely regarded as the driver of investment sentiment.”

The soothsayers are generally bullish on Hong Kong stock – and forecast the HSI to gallop above 28,000 – well above where it sits today at around 22,000. “We uncovered so many unexpected connections, coincidences and links between the HSI and this Wood Horse that we discern a definite Casablanca connection - ‘the beginning of a beautiful friendship’. And one that should be very rewarding. Our pure bull forecast sees the index hit 28,105,” it says.

The best performers are businesses associated with wood (retail, soft commodities, and plantations), according to the report. Fire-related stock – like internet, tech, telecoms, as well as some oil & gas suppliers are also expected to fare well. However, earth-related stock – like property and resources are seen dwindling. And, there are warnings that the predominant elements of wood and fire will produce unexpected ‘explosions’.

If the Feng Shui masters are right, then 2014 might turn out to be a year where the ‘black swan’ determines what

happens. Notable ‘explosions’ away from the

market in previous horse years include the flooding of the Yangzee River in 1954, the unleashing the Cultural Revolution in 1996 by Chairman Mao and Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait in 1990.

CLSA says Janet Yellen is in for a great year. “Yellen's weightings look pure Goldilocks: a 'just right' balance of safe, sensible, sure and steady, with enough off-kilter to keep it real. Her Fire Dog fortune chart's ears have pricked up of late, with the expectation of some big-time tailwagging all next year.”

As for the city of Rio De Janeiro – the report says, it will be a good test ahead of the 2016 Olympics. “How's it looking? Much as you'd expect from the charts: a little too chaotic for comfort, but definitely moving forward.”

It concludes, “Like any great sporting drama, this one will go to the wire. Certain disaster is averted with external support. Hand of God, perhaps?”

Al Habtoor welcomes Zoltán Jancsi, Ambassador of Hungary to the UAE

Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Chairman of Al Habtoor Group met with His Excellency, Zoltán Jancsi, Ambassador of Hungary to the United Arab Emirates on Monday, January 27 at the Group’s head office. This is the second meeting for the Chairman and the Hungarian Ambassador since September 2013, shortly after Mr Jancsi’s appointment to the diplomatic role.

The Chairman and His Excellency discussed new potential investments for the Al Habtoor Group in Hungary, mainly in the hospitality sector. The Al Habtoor Group purchased the historic five-star Le Méridien Hotel in central Budapest in May, 2012.

The subject of discussion was also the planned book launch of the ‘Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor – the Autobiography’ in Hungary in spring 2014. The autobiography, which was released late 2012, has been so far launched in the GCC and United Kingdom.

HM Consul General to Dubai visits Khalaf Al Habtoor

Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Chairman of the Al Habtoor Group welcomed Her Majesty’s Consul General to Dubai, Edward Hobart to his office on Sunday, February 3. The HM Consul General and Mr. Al Habtoor have known each other for some time. Also present at the meeting was Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice-Chairman and CEO, Al Habtoor Group and Paul Rayner, Advisor to the Chairman. They discussed ongoing cooperation between the Al Habtoor Group and British entities - like Help for Heroes, a military charity formed to help those who have been wounded in Britain’s conflicts, and British Polo Day.

They also talked about the economic boom in Dubai and the benefits of setting up British companies in the UAE. Al Habtoor said, “Dubai is a perfect place for British business. We follow similar principles of law and encourage entrepreneurship. There are many British businesses here that have flourished. I encourage more companies to set up a base in Dubai.”

She was accompanied by Moataz Al-Alfi, Chairman, Americana – who is also Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees at AUC and Mary Iskander, Senior Advisor to the President, AUC. The group said he will be receiving a full annual report on the progress of Dr. Sherin Shaaban, the recipient of the Fellowship.

They also informed Al Habtoor, one of their biggest donors, that they will soon open a Harvard Medical School - Global Research Centre in Dubai to help improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. The Centre, which will be based at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Centre in DHCC, will focus on research and diabetes care, as well as research for Hepatitis C, tuberculosis and mental health.

Mohammed Al Habtoor said, “Asteco has a great reputation in the region, and we are confident it will meet our demands with the project. Dubai’s economy is booming right now and the city needs a project like ours to meet its growing demands for upscale residential living - especially ahead of the Expo 2020. Al Habtoor City is our flagship project. It will be a great addition to Dubai.”

Al Habtoor City, a multi-use development, will incorporate three five star hotels (WESTIN, W Hotel and St. Regis), and three residential towers. The

residential blocks will incorporate up to 1,500 luxury apartments – including 11 penthouses, two of which are VIP penthouses over a 4-storey high podium.

Two of the residential towers within Al Habtoor City will be 74 floors high, boasting spectacular views of Dubai; the third tower will scale 40 floors. The taller blocks will feature a 4-storey VIP penthouse with 3,000 square meter of living space, and 360 degree view of the city.

Mohammed Al Habtoor added, “The penthouses will be spectacular, and

fitted to the highest of standards. They will be very unique.”

Al Habtoor Group announces Board Revamp

Henning Fries promoted to Managing Director Hospitality Division

Henning Fries has been promoted to Managing Director-Hospitality Division, Al Habtoor Group from Director of Operations, Habtoor Hotels. Mr. Fries, who joined the Group in early 2013, oversees the global hotel assets, and has been instrumental in driving growth in the hotels division of the Dubai-based conglomerate.

The promotion, which took place in February, is part of a realignment of a cohesive strategy across the Group.

Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice Chairman and CEO, Al Habtoor Group said, “Mr. Fries has been a great addition to our management team. He has been key in driving growth for the business and plays an important role in our business strategy.”

The Al Habtoor Group’s hotel business has expanded fast over the past few years and the Group has ambitious plans in the pipeline, as part Fries’ remit. Al Habtoor Group appoints Ahmed Al Otaiba as Director & Member of the Board

The Al Habtoor Group has appointed Ahmed Al Otaiba as the company’s Director & Member of the Board effective as of January 26, 2014. The position is a new role within the Group’s executive team. Mr. Al Otaiba will work closely with all business units – Al Habtoor Motors, Habtoor Hotels, Diamondlease, Emirates International Schools, Dubai National Insurance and Reinsurance (DNIRC), Real Estate, and Construction.

He joins the Group after several years of experience with the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) in the fields of investment strategies, funds, securities, and he will occupy an important position in running the Group’s strategic operations and enhancing the management expertise.

Furne One, originally from the Philippines, started his avant garde label ‘Amato’ in Dubai in 2002 when he partnered with local textile expert Rashid Ali. “Opening a fashion house in a foreign land is not easy,” he says. “It was a big challenge but I took the risk.”

He puts his success down to hard work, determination, vision – and support from his family and friends – as well as “a little luck.”

Furne started his career as an apprentice at a well-known design house in New York. He was later commissioned by Swarovski to design a bridal gown which featured in their limited edition book ‘Unbridled’. He has also appeared on Germany’s Next Top Model alongside supermodel Heidi Klum, and his bespoke creations have been worn by many celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Katie Perry and Shakira.

Amato, which means ‘beloved’ in Italian, was inspired by the evolution of the UAE. The label was built simultaneously on similar founding principles - creative culture, eco-friendly ethics, and fair policies.

Furne, who is known for his modest, down-to-earth demeanour, says he has the full backing of his business partner, who believes in him and has encouraged him to reach his goals. He says when he first moved to Dubai he had a “very positive feeling” that Dubai and the UAE was going to be one of the world’s future fashion capitals. “It is going in that direction. The UAE has a very rich culture. You can see it everywhere from the architecture, paintings, fashion.”

His first ever collection, ‘Unveiled Soul 2004’, struck a chord with the Middle East’s fashion elite, making

him an overnight sensation and his intricately detailed, hand stitched creations became ‘must-have’ items. “Emiratis have their own sense of style,” he says, “They want grandeur, they love colours, opulence and texture.”

He adds, “Meshing cultures, using the region’s rare arts, layering it with eastern and western elements, I create unique pieces for my urban and globalised clients, reflecting their personal and cultural identities.”

The Filipino designer says life itself is his inspiration, but he gives credit to the maternal elements of his life for his creative mind. “My creativity is inspired by my mother and grandmother’s quintessential style that coloured my vision,” he says. “I have always tried to create exquisite and ethereal design tempered with a silent touch of strength. My collections aren’t for the faint hearted woman, but one who is comfortable in her skin; her ensembles are but a foil to reflect her inner persona.”

He uses a lot of French dantelle, matte Swarovski crystals, duchess satin, and soft tulles to create has glittery gowns they are “very feminine and soft, but

powerful… to create something a bit edgy and modern.”

His latest collection, he says, was inspirited by Victorian Age Geishas. “I fused Geisha and Marie

Antoniette into one being. They have different cultures and traditions and different beliefs but they have similarities as well. One is freedom - like freedom to love and choose whom to love.”

Furne One’s elaborately embroidered bespoke ensembles have caught the attention of the world, making the Haute Couturier one of the hottest new talents in the fashion world.

When you think of Haute Couture, places like London, Paris, Milan and New York typically spring to mind. However, Dubai-based designer Furne One has quickly carved out a name for himself on the world fashion stage – and today he is considered one of the most hotly anticipated designers. Joanna Andrews went to find out more.

Each year the Al Habtoor Group Chairman hosts the Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge – which has been running for 16 years. The tournament has kick started the careers of many well-known players… including former number one Jelena Janković. Joanna Andrews caught up with Jelana and Ukrainian tennis star Alexandr Dolgopolov on a recent visit to Dubai where they hosted a tennis clinic for young children at the Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa.

The Serbian tennis star has been a guest at the Habtoor Grand Beach Resort and Spa several times since winning the Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge (AHTC) in 2003. “The tournament was one of the great times for me and it will always stay in my memory. It was the beginning of my professional career,” she says. “When you win a tournament, it gives you great motivation to continue and you get more inspired to continue to work hard to win more tournaments.”

She adds, “I have great memories of coming here,” she adds. “I have known Mr. Al Habtoor for a few years; he is a great man and he offers great facilities. The Habtoor Grand Beach Resort and Spa is a nice hotel with good facilities. I love training here for my tournaments.”

So what does she like about Dubai? “Everything,” she says with a smile. “I love the weather, I love the people. It is very relaxing, I enjoy pretty much everything!”

Since winning the AHTC she has played - and won - in many Grand Slam events including the US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon. She was ranked world no. 1 for seventeen consecutive weeks until she was overtaken by Serena Williams in 2009.

Janković, who is currently ranked 8th in the WTA ranking, recently advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open. She has clocked up more than 500 wins to her name and has reached the singles finals of several Grand Slam events. In 2007, she became the first Serbian player to win a Grand Slam title when she won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title with British partner Jamie Murray.

Dolgopolov, who at the height of his career had an ATP World Ranking of 13, has won three Grand Slams in his career - two in the singles game and one in the men’s doubles.

Dolgopolov comes from a sporty family; his father was a professional tennis player for the Soviet team and his mother was a gymnast. “I was always around tennis,” he says. “It was pretty cool. I was at tennis tournaments from a very young age.”

His father, Oleksandr Dolgopolvo, coached Andrei Medvedev - Ukraine's most successful tennis player to date as well as world-famous names Andre Agassi, and Boris Becker.

Alexandr, or Alex, is known as one of the most charismatic players in professional tennis. Spanish pro Rafael Nadal once said, “He’s a crazy player…because you can expect everything… I know he can hit a winner from every place in the court.”

Jelena Janković and Hungarian tennis pro Kyra Nagy were the first to set foot on the tennis court at the brand new Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah ahead of the five star hotels’ grand opening. The well-known tennis pros played a friendly game at the court, which boasts spectacular views of the Palm Jumeirah and Arabian Gulf. The hotel, situated on the East Crescent of the iconic Palm Jumeirah, is the latest addition to the Al Habtoor Group portfolio.

The Ukraine, who was born in 1988, says “My father just tried to teach me the shots that he knew. I was pretty small when I was 15 so I had to use all my shots to beat others. I grew up making those kinds of shots that most of the players didn’t use, so that’s how I got there.”

Success hasn’t come easy for Dolgopolov. He suffers from a hereditary disorder known as Gilbert's Syndrome, which causes fatigue, “You just need to deal with it,” he says. “When I feel bad I just need to play more aggressive and change my style a little bit, you get used to it. I adjust when needed, and try to fight and do my best.”

So what does he like most about Dubai? “It is a really good environment. The weather it is really nice, it is not too hot and not too humid like Miami. I have been here for three weeks and it didn’t rain once, so it is really good to prepare, plus there is a beach here!”

dream to become a professional tennis player. She says it came to fruition with hard work, commitment and a lot of determination. “I came from Serbia, and we didn’t really have a tradition in tennis. I think no-one made it at the time, so it was an impossible task. But I think with hard work, with dedication and sacrifice I think you can achieve anything.”

She says her most memorable moment in her career was making it to world number 1, “actually finishing as the best player in the world, which was in Moscow. I was told I would finish the

year as the number one player. That was a dream come true for me and a very, very special point in my career.”

But with success there was a lot of sacrifice, she says. “I had belief in myself and in my family and friends. It took many years - since I was a child I was training and trying to achieve my

goal which I did when I was 23 years old.” So, what advice does she have for

budding young tennis players today? “It is important to always give your best, to have the passion for the sport, you have to love what you do and do it with a smile on your face and always strive after your dreams.”

I have great memories of coming here...I have known Mr. Al Habtoor for a few years; he is a great man and he offers great facilities.

Ghantoot Polo Team defeated Desert Palm 2 Polo Team by nine goals to eight to take the Silver Cup in the final on Saturday February 15, 2014 at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. The Silver Cup precedes the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series 2014.

In the final, Ghantoot’s Abdullah bin Dismal, Juan Zubiaurre, Facundo Sola and Pelayo Berazadi played a great match against a tough opponent. Sola, a well-known player from Argentina, was named the Most Valued Player of the match and the entire Silver Cup series.

It was an exciting final in the McLaren Silver Cup, as Ghantoot Polo narrowly beat Desert Palm 2, and the Habtoor brothers, Mohammed and Rashid, battled it out in the Hildon Cup. Joanna Andrews has the highlights…

Meanwhile, in another nail-biting match, Mohammed Al Habtoor and his older brother Rashid battled it out in the Hildon Cup, played alongside the Silver Cup tournament. Mohammed’s Habtoor Polo Team narrowly defeated Rashid’s Mahra by six goals to five.
