"We live in a world that is being increasingly shaped by social and technological advancements which enable ideas to spread faster than ever before. In this society of knowledge the tools to make a difference are available to every individual and it is imperative that youth is able to develop a well rounded world view based on values of tolerance and understanding.

AIESEC aims to develop the next generation of young leaders, individuals with global mindset, entrepreneurial outlook, emotional intelligence, active learning and social responsibility. Individuals capable of adapting to a fast changing environment, keeping in mind what’s best for our society.

It is important also to recognize the large network of individuals, companies, organizations and authorities that enable us, as the largest youth driven organization in the world, to deliver a high quality development experience to university students across Bulgaria.

This year has seen an increasing number of young Bulgarians having a practical leadership experience, develop international careers through our internship program and develop a global network of contacts that will serve as their platform for enabling positive change. We have made those possible thanks to the commitment and the contribution of every member of the organization in Bulgaria.

Looking forward, AIESEC has set a global mid-term ambition of “Engaging and developing every young person in the world”, and this is a commitment that our organization will take forward in Bulgaria by expanding our reach to support the development of the next generation of Bulgarian professionals, a generation of individuals with a broad understanding of the world and their capacity to make a positive impact in it.

I am proud to have been part of the organization that has developed and guided many individuals through their journeys and it has been a pleasure to lead the term of 2010/2011 towards achievement and success."

Helly Stoyanova

A member of AIESEC who has gone through both, the international internship program and an experiential leadership program within the management of this organization is considered to have a Dual Experience.

Young people who have gone through this type of experience are often recognized as globally minded change agents, able to manage change within complex organizations or ready for starting their own ventures.

The type of experience equips the individual with the capacity of generating and managing diverging thinking through the incorporation of different cultural aspects into business practices and daily activities – provided by the international internship. It also provides them with the theoretical and practical knowledge in leadership and management - provided by the experiential leadership program -comparable to programs that would cost tens of thousands of Euros for an organization to replicate with its employees.

AIESEC members that have gone through dual experiences are highly valued in by organizations in our dynamic and increasingly complex economic environment, and this is proven by the increasing number of global companies that rely on AIESEC to attract young leaders to their top development programs.

“Who if not me? When if not now? Those two questions were popping out in my head throughout my journey in AIESEC… I felt that our society and how it functions need to be changed, I did not know how, and in what direction, but I was ready to ask questions. It is very hard to remain idealistic just living your everyday life, but certainly the combination of experiences I gained in the organization (leadership roles and international exchange) gave me the motivation and support to follow my dream.

Taking a leadership position in AIESEC was one of the most turning events in my life – I realized that change depends on every one of us, and that serious work and set of skills are required for those who will implement it. Additionally to experiencing the challenges to manage a team, budgets, complex projects and take decisions every day, in AIESEC you serve a bigger purpose, that in my case was a great driver and source of energy. Later on, I decided to challenge myself further and go and work far from home for one year.

That is how I fell in love with a new country – Colombia, and found out about other culture, learned a new language and met many amazing individuals. Moreover, I got the chance to work for a non-profit organization with great goals and see some of the development challenges of Latin America. And only then, somewhere in the middle of that year I evaluated how immense was the learning and personal growth I gained from my previous roles in the organization. Now I am aware of what I want to achieve in my life, but more importantly – I know myself and my capacity to follow my goals.

Today’s society needs responsible leaders more than ever, and I am convinced the integrated experience provided by AIESEC is a step towards leadership for better future.´

Dual Experiences

Anton Valkov, President 2009/2010AIESEC Bulgaria, internship in Colombia

Page 12: AIESEC Bulgaria 2010-2011 Annual Report

“I have been in AIESEC for more than two and a half years now. Starting off as a member of the External Relations team, initially I did not foresee the amount of opportunities I would later dare to grasp.

After a few months I decided to explore other areas of AIESEC to build on my potential. I ended up managing a recruitment project for my local committee, which was a major learning experience, and resulted in success. This motivated me to move to the talent management functional area and attend an international training conference for trainers.

The confidence and knowledge I had summoned, made me an active member of the local trainers team of the committee, which I enjoyed a lot. Learning through doing in that way was fun, but it only made me hungrier for more challenges. Thus, I went for an international internship to support my educational background in India – quite the unexplored place for us, people of the Balkans. India, and the mid-sized advertising agency I worked for as an account manager, showed me how accessible, challenging, fun, and most of all, united the world of AIESEC is.

By the time I got back to my local committee, I figured I owed it more dedication and effort. After getting elected as local committee president, I have the best chances at making the best of my position and leading it to become even more successful, while making every member proud of being a part of the unit.”

“When I recall my AIESEC experience, I feel grateful, that I have gone through it and at the same time, satisfied, that I have contributed a piece of me to the organization. For me, the time I have spent in AIESEC plays a significant role for my journey of personal development.

My first exchange experience was as various as it could be! It gave me friends, emotions, professional contacts, multicultural perspective and so much more! I spent eight weeks working for a big foundation in Bratislava, where I found myself in a caring and mentoring environment, among people, who are really passionate about what they’re doing. This internship helped me to broaden my horizons about my future realization and it helped me to become more responsible person

Finally, the best thing I gained out of my experience are the people I met! It is one of th most valuable assets nowadays and I believe that’s the uniqueness of our organization!

Now, I am looking forward for my next internship in KPMG in Italy, but I am sure that in whatever part of the world I could be, I will continue to enrich myself by meeting extraordinary individuals from AIESEC.”

The concept of the project is to meet high potential students with representatives of the business sector. It is a three days event that aims to connect students from different fields of study to the reality of the companies throughout an interactive case-study competition. Organized by AIESEC Bulgaria since 2007, Business in Practice has become an opportunity for students to test their theoretical knowledge on practice, for companies to position as employers and to showcase their expertise in specific area.

Business in practice

Moreover, this meeting bridges the gap in the expectations of the business today about education and students` expectations towards future employers. In the framework of the event this year there were discussions on entrepreneurship and start ups and career planning and development. The events have taken place not only in Sofia but in other towns where AIESEC is located.

National Partners

Youth in Action" programme continued to be a valuable partner to AIESEC in term 10|11. Thanks to the support of European Voluntary Service the tradition of working on developing youth people with global mindset is continued. Realizing the project Responsible Youth for Sustainable Future, AIESEC Bulgaria hosted a volunteer who brought a true meaning to the internationalism in the project - Henrietta Vöröss originally from Hungary, she took the opportunity with EVS in Romania, and after nine months in Bulgaria continuing her international experience in Greece.

"I wanted to experience something different from Central and Western Europe - that's why I chose Bulgaria, but I didn't want only a great experience and adventure but my time here to make some difference and when I saw the opportunity with "Youth in Action" programme I knew I have found everything in one. The project was aiming to build the global mindset and the active civil position in the youth and I can say that I have seen the change in the participants in it - meeting students from all over Bulgaria, sharing my experience and knowledge was indeed a step in the right direction. Now I can say that Bulgaria is country with a great history, amazing nature and hospitable people. For the time spent here I've learned a lot, I've met great people, I've traveled around the country and had an amazing time - the friendships, the fun moments, the shared knowledge and all the places I've been will be forever a great memory."
