AIESEC Romania at the end of 2008

Here I am with my team coming close to the end of our term and now more thanever it seems like I am coming out of a dream world, afraid perhaps of the things Iwill find when I wake up.

Everywhere companies are collapsing and all people talk about, is the financialcrisis. Though it is true that our incomes have also decreased, in terms oforganizational objectives we are growing. The year 2008 brought AIESEC Romaniaits highest results with our main achievements taking place during the crisis, and

the growth rate still continues. I like to think that during such times people direct their investmentstowards those things that are really valuable and qualitative. Perhaps this is why AIESEC remains achoice for most of our stakeholders.

I am also currently part of a world where Romania occupies the 9th place in terms of performance, compared to other 110 countries on the globe. In this world no matter where people come from, theylook up to you if you are Romanian. As proof more than 20 members from AIESEC Romania are nowpart of a national committee in another country and 6 AIESEC countries are currently lead by aRomanian. For the last 5 years we have constantly had a person in the international committee ofAIESEC and 2 years ago the President of AIESEC International was also Romanian. From where I standwe are being true to our brand promise and AIESEC in Romania actually develops leaders.

Having recently returned from Italy I would like to give the example that AIESEC members there havea contrary opinion to that of the general public about Romanians and are actually looking intomethods on how to rehabilitate the image of Romania in Italy. Perhaps impact and change are notjust words that we like to play with in AIESEC but actual facts.

Right now I am proud to say that I have brought my contribution to this dream world and my hope isthat when I become an alumnus, I won’t just wake up, but I will keep bringing my contribution andbelieving that the dream world might just become the real one.

The AIESEC Experience

From taking the first step of joining AIESEC, a door of diverse opportunities is opened to students through the AIESEC Experience. Made up of five stages, the AIESEC experience enables young people to discover and develop their leadership potential. In the introduction to AIESEC stage, our members become aware of what the organization is about and the opportunities available for them.

Moving on to taking responsibility, AIESEC allows members to develop skills such as project management, public speaking, strategic planning, marketing, selling, facilitating and problem solving, among others. One can choose to fulfill a leadership role to support the development of others, and the experience they go through as they strive to achieve the organization’s overall goals.

Iulian Boia’s leadership experience in AIESEC, as president of the AIESEC Iasi Local Committee, has provided him with management skills and also developed self awareness and self confidence: “I think AIESEC let me know what I’m capable of, it made me aware of my strengths and had me practice them. In terms of changes in me: self awareness and self confidence; more perspective, management skills, a couple of new friends in Romania and some other

countries, a busy schedule and a feeling of doing something meaningful.”

Divided into four types: Management Traineeships (MT), Technical Traineeships (TT), Development Traineeships (DT) and Education Traineeship (ET), Exchange is the next step of the AIESEC experience. Marius Blajuţ decided, after his leadership experience in AIESEC Bucharest, to expand his understanding of the Asian culture and mentality. Marius experienced a 4 months internship at

General Electric in Malaysia, where he developed and coordinated the implementation of the agenda of a 3 days conference on entrepreneurship.

After an enriching AIESEC Experience, AIESEC members are the ready to head for the future, where they consider how they will bridge their experience after AIESEC, when they become an alumnus. AIESEC Romania alumni are located all over the globe, working in various professions and industries and playing important roles in their communities.

Communication Report

In 2008 AIESEC Romania has successfully implemented 2 nationalcommunication campaigns: “I am an AIESECer” and “Choose your ownexperience”. During 2008 more than 5000 students and recent graduatesapplied for AIESEC, aiming to live the AIESEC experience!

In November 2008, we made a survey in 10 Romanian cities, wanting to knowmore about the way we are perceived by students in the Romanian market. Interms of statistics, 88% of the students present in the campuses where AIESECis recruiting know about AIESEC

Corporate Relations

AIESEC Romania’s performance on Corporate Relations in 2008 continued on the uphill trend it had in the last few years. Maybe the most important step we made this year is switching our focus on creating and selling performing and brand-aligned products that had a significant impact in every local society. Moreover, a significant progress was visible in sales culture with small and medium Local Committees managing to develop and benefit from a consistent sales force. The education cycle of sales people in AIESEC Romania is getting more and more complex and externals’ involvement in this education speeds up this process significantly.

On national level, we have restructured our National Group of Partners and we have made a point out of upholding and further developing only the relevant and consistent partnerships.

Companies have become very involved in our processes and have been able to support us in various ways, not just through financial and in-kind support.

Brand Impact

"At ING Romania (Life Insurance Division), we value the

entrepreneurial behavior of young people. By partnering with AIESEC Romania, we have tried, in the past three years to discuss with as many AIESEC Members and students about Entrepreneurship and show them why Romanian society needs young entrepreneurs. We are very happy with the projects we have developed with AIESEC on this issue and hope to continue with better and even more impactful ones, as our organization is ever more interested in this topic.”

AIESEC RomaniaExchange Report

Maybe the most important thing thathappened in 2008 on the Exchangearea is the fact that we managed toovercome the last year’s performance(234 exchanges) by realizing 270exchanges. After 3 years ofdecreasing in exchange results westarted again on an uphill trend.

Moreover, we tried to make sure thatour growth is sustainable by having acontinuous focus on the quality ofthe exchange experience we offered.2 of the most important strategiesthat we applied in this sense are:realizing exchanges around projectsand focusing on offering completeAIESEC experiences to our members(both leadership position andexchange experience) – we increasedthe number of members that went inan internship having a previousleadership experience.

When speaking about thecontribution of the local committees, even though the big committeescontributed the most to the overallresults of the country, we are contentto see that the ones from the smallcluster brought a bigger contributionto our final results comparing withthe last years.

Speaking about the type of exchangeswe realized, this year we capitalizedon the pools on which we hadexperience, this way we consolidatedour current position in order to beable to grow sustainable on the otherpools in the next years.

Budget

During 2008, a focus for AIESEC Romania wasto manage the resources in an effective way, both by increasing the revenues and byreducing the costs (especially in the lastquarter of 2008, due to the global financialcrisis, but not only). At the end of the year,we had a surplus, which will make it moreeasily to cover costs for the first months ofthe year 2009.

Grants

2008 was a year in which AIESEC Romaniaapplied for grants to sustain the nationalprojects. Although the final results were notpublic by the end of the year, we are confident that atleast one of the national projects will be sustainablethrough European funds. Moreover, the local committeesobtained an increasing amount of revenues from grantsduring 2008, by accessing not only the local funds but alsonational and European ones.

2%

An increasing amount of revenues were obtained in 2008,by the local committees from the 2% law, an opportunityfor Romanian citizens to transfer 2% of their income tax tonon governmental organizations, and some of the localcommittees had outstanding results that were adopted byother local committees for the upcoming year.

Alumni fund

AIESEC Romania has opened this year an Alumni Fund, bythe means of which, the Alumni of the organization cancontribute financially to the organization and can also bepresented the status regarding usage of the money.Several Alumni donated money for the participation of thenational team of AIESEC Romania to the InternationalCongress in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

AIESEC Romania Projects

This year, the activity of the Projects Department in AIESEC Romania was more focused on bringing unity in messages and more impact in the country. We set higher expectations from our projects ` results by creating a development platform for the project management activity through a grant from Microsoft which consists in free access for MS Project Application.

For high-school students, we have developed World Citizenship, a project that aims to bring several international trainers in our country through our credited Exchange program, so that they can deliver a well-structured complementary preparation to Romanian students who sign up for the program.

This program has been developed by each of our 13 Local Committees in the past 5 years. The main purpose of the project is to offer carefully-selected high-school students an international, non-formal and innovative alternative to their high-school curricula. It aims to connect young people with well-prepared and specialized international trainers from over 15 countries, who will deliver preparations on topics like: Environmental Issues, Global Citizenship, Personal Development, and Career Orientation.

Sustainability Challenge is aiming to be the biggest and most visible event ever developed by AIESEC Romania. It will happen on a one-year time-span, starting February 2009 and it is a very special event since it offers both to participants and partnering companies every benefit available through AIESEC Projects.

Corresponding to market and society realities, our organization focuses regularly on a number of issues (topics of interest). In the past years we have had a special interest, among others, in Education, Entrepreneurship and IT&C. Consequently, we have developed a series of events and projects focused on this issues. Through them but specifically through Sustainability Challenge we aim to offer young people from all-over the country, unique experiences of education, training, contests, leadership and international internships focused on these 3 issues.

The final goal is offering the participants in Sustainability Challenge specific opportunities to work on one of these issues and make use of the knowledge and experience gained all through the project. We expect our partnering companies to facilitate these opportunities for them.

AIESEC Brasov

15 years of AIESEC in Brasov

The project “AIESEC 15” was meant to celebrate 15 years of existence of AIESEC in Brasov.

The event was comprised of a gathering of internationals who presented us with the specific of their countries, underlining the world wide nature of our organization, after which all the guests participated in a gala presentation of AIESEC Brasov and our results. Our 2008 results come down to the 9 lives that we changed through the Exchange program: 4 people that left our country and 5 people that we had the honor to take in from other AIESEC local organizations in the world. Also there were the words of our founding members and our distinguished former members. We had the opportunity to have in our office from Brasov the culture of India, New Zeeland, Italy, Brazil and Afghanistan through people that were more than opened to work next to us, share ideas and participate to the development of our members.

After a moment of AIESEC culture, the guests were delighted at the opportunity to socialize and recall former times in our after-event buffet and so ending the celebration of 15 years of AIESEC in Brasov.

International Train the Trainers in Brasov

AIESEC is recognized for providing the Romanian market with ones of the best trainers and this also because of the high quality preparation that is offered for its members on this area.

In September 2008 AIESEC Brasov organized, together with AIESEC National Trainers Team, an international conference, preparing 70 people on the training area. The conference was built on two tracks, one for beginners and one for advanced and it took place on different agendas for 3 days. One specific and benefic thing for the preparations on training developed by AIESEC is the fact that in the last day of the conference the participants have the opportunity to simulate a session delivery; this fact happened in this conference also.

The sessions from the conference were delivered by people with experience in the training area, which were more than happy to share their practical experience with the participants:

AIESEC Craiova

AIESEC Craiova was the second Romanian local committee to be founded, in 1991, thanks to AIESEC Graz, Austria. Since then, we had given an opportunity to over 85 students to experience the eXchange program, and to over 500 students to develop their potential by working on our departments and projects. Today, AIESEC Craiova gives you the chance to experience team-work by getting involved in the various interesting projects it realizes (World Citizenship, Learn To Change The Future, Sustainability Challenge), and to develop your skills, setting the basis of an outstanding future career.

World Citizenship ‘World Citizenship’ is a project addressed to local high schools students. The aim of the project is to develop the non formal education by offering a wide range variety of trainings delivered by trainees. In our local committee, the history of this project goes back 4 years ago when it was called ‘European Citizenship’. Since then people from all over the world have delivered trainings on topics such as: cultural diversity, decision making process, how to treat a job interview, career planning etc... This project comes to solve a series of social problems such as people’s rigid thinking when dealing with different issues and it also comes to improve the lack of modern learning techniques among high school students. Moreover, the outstanding part of ‘World Citizenship’ is that trainees all over the world enjoy spending time with Romanian students while they learn useful information one from each other. Thus, AIESEC helps the Romanian educational system bringing innovative learning methods which combine team work, cultural sharing and lots of practical exercises. Learn To Change The Future AIESEC Craiova unfolds this project involving the University and high school students from our City .Moreove, this project benefits by the help of local institutions and youth NGOs. Its main purpose is to educate and to make people aware of the need to fight against the harming ecological and social behavior. Thus, a number of 30 students receive trainings on themes such as: civic behavior, ecology in our local area and not only, volunteering and project management.

National Preparation Seminar 2008

National Preparation Seminar is AIESEC Romania largest annual conference.Ran on three tracks: National Training Seminar (NTS), LeadershipDevelopment Seminar (LDS) and International Cultural Preparation Seminar(ICPS), NPS 2008 gathered in Amara, Romania, more than 500 delegates, company representatives and AIESEC Alumni.

National Training Seminar is addresed to first or second year students thathave just entered AIESEC, and that are finishing their Introduction to AIESECstage. Leadership Development Seminar is addresed to AIESEC members thatare entering Leadership stage, or that are currently leaders in AIESEC. InterCultural Preparation Seminar is addresed to AIESEC members that areplanning to take an internship in the near future.

Leadership Development Seminar 2008

In 2008, the Leadership Development Seminar was different than any otherconference we organized before. We created a process through which thefuture leaders of AIESEC Romania built a long term vision for the organizationthat they will lead in the next years.

The conference had the purpose of building attachment and responsibility forAIESEC. The key message transmitted to the future leaders was: You ownAIESEC.

Beside the vision building process, we welcomed partner representativeswho delivered trainings concerning the role of a leader in creating, communicating and implementing a vision in the organization.

This conference was a very special and unique one also thanks to the chair,Edyson Dos Santos, former President of AIESEC International. Given his vastexperience in AIESEC, he was able to bring a new perspective and hechallenged the delegates throughout the process they underwent.

„Working for this conference was one of the greatest experiences for me, Igot to know an enthusiastic and passionate future generation of AIESECleaders who believe in the impact that we can have in our society and arewilling to bring their personal contribution to reaching our long term vision.”(Mariana Calin – Leadership Development Seminar Conference Manager)
