You’ll never be alone
● Google, Yahoo and Bing 'Track', 'Target' and 'Bubble' you. They:
– Tune your search results to what they know about you
– Send you annoying adverts– Limit the results to your searches
● Avoid this with Firefox or Chromium and the DuckDuckGo search engine:
– Firefox settings– DuckDuckGo settings
Tracking 1
● When you search Google, Yahoo or Bing:– Your search term is also sent to the requested site
– Unless you take precautions it will also be sent to other sites. You will be tracked
– Check your browser with Panopticlick https://panopticlick.eff.org/
Test Results
Tracking 2
● Who cares about which sites they visit?● Many sites have third-party ads, and those third-
parties build profiles about you, so they can follow you.
● Your profile can also be sold, so if you had a cold sore and looked up 'herpes', your insurance might go up.
● Your searches are saved by Google, and may be legally requested.
● The same applies to your email.
Firefox Search Engines
● You can add any search engines you like
● Click on ‘Manage Search Engines’ to change the order or delete the unwanted
DuckDuckGo
Firefox will check that you really want to install duckduckgo
Tracking 3
● Bubbling is when your search history is used to promote what you like, and demote what you do not like.
● Different people get different results.
Firefox - Security
If you share a PC with your dearly belovedand don’t want them to know what birthday presentyou have bought them, use the ‘Privacy’ setting.
