Stetson University Spec Martin Stadium Stetson University | DeLand, Florida

The City of DeLand Florida’s Spec Martin Stadium has been the historic home of DeLand High School Football for decades. Situated several blocks southeast of the Historic City’s downtown, as part of a 6 city block recreational neighborhood, that includes a baseball stadium, ball-fields, tennis courts, walking trails and a senior citizens center, the City owned stadium facilities, last improved in 2002, were in need of major upgrades in order to accommodate Stetson University’s newly constituted collegiate football program. While the bleachers and fan accommodations were sufficient to meet both the current and expected demand, the team locker room facilities, press box and site improvements would not meet the needs of a NCAA program. ACi was engaged as part of a Design-Build team with the Collage Companies to transform the existing locker rooms and design new press box facilities. Faced with a tight budget and time frame for completion, the overall solution consisted of constructing a new 3 story press box with a roof top camera deck at the location of the former press box and the renovations and addition to the existing locker rooms. The locker rooms provided accommodations for 125 home players, 75 visitors, designated locker areas for home and visitor coaches, officials and a media conference room. The state-of-the-art press box provides 3 indoor VIP suites, accommodations for the press and media, as well as, suites for home and visitor coaching staff. The project came in on budget and within the 10 month total schedule for design and construction. The project was named the “OUTSTANDING PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP PROJECT” for 2013 by the Florida Planning and Zoning Association.

Stetson University Conrad HallStetson University | DeLand, Florida

Cost: $425 Thousand | Year Completed: 2012

Stetson University’s Conrad Hall, a 50-year-old building, was renovated to meet modern codes and ADA requirements. Unforeseen and undocumented conditions complicated the building’s restroom renovation; however, creative solutions and complete commitment of team resources created problem solving solutions allowing the project completion to be on time.

The project scope included demolition and replacement of all interior finishes, plumbing, electrical, and ventilation to provide new bathrooms, as well as exterior modifications to meet ADA requirements.

During our review of the existing building, and by reviewing old plans form the early 1900’s, our team realized this project had the potential of adding revenue producing dorm rooms in spaces that were under utilized in it’s current configuration. As a result, our team responded to the RFP by including the full renovation of all the community bathrooms along with adding four additional dorm rooms (eight revenue producing beds) as part of our proposal. All of this was accomplished while meeting the overall program budget and completing the work on time for student occupancy.

Stetson UniversitySage Hall Laboratory | DeLand, Florida

Cost: $1 Million | Year Completed: 2011

The project consists of repair and renovations of 5 classrooms in the Sage Hall Science building. The 5 classrooms were part of the original building, which was constructed in 1967 and is approximately 66,000 GSF. A new addition was added to the west end of Sage Hall in 2007. The addition separated from the existing building with a firewall.

The newly renovated classrooms did not add any additional occupant load to the building and did not affect the construction type of the building. The construction type is a Type II-B.

The original building consists of concrete floors, concrete black partition walls at the corridors and steel frame. The exiting takes place at the 4 corners of the building via stairs. The 13,000 SF additions is a Class B occupancy with a II-B Construction type with sprinklers.

ACi has worked successfully on the Rollins Campus for more than 10 years performing tasks as simple as picking a paint color or a light fixture, to highly specialized large scale complex renovations/additions to new buildings. Keene Music HallRollins College | Winter Park, FloridaCost: $2.6 Million | Year Completed: 2003

The purpose was to house the music school administration and classrooms, to renovate the existing facility, to expand by 7,000 GSF, and to provide an acoustical multi-purpose room, practice rooms and a state-of-the-art recital hall. One of the greatest challenges to this two-story project was the finite funding for construction. Therefore, it was decided that the exterior would have an understated yet elegant expression to delicately utilize the color, texture and massing of the campus architectural vocabulary. The interior was developed using a design theory of “the color of music”. ACi chose color palettes for the various building functions which created unique environments within the facility. We organized the functional requirements around acoustical state-of the-art requirements. These are seen in the recital hall’s band shell forms and the dramatic cascading, syncopating rhythm of the walls with colors that provide a harmonic visual cadence expressing “the color of music.”

CORNELL FINE ARTS MUSEUM ROLLINS COLLEGE

The project requirements were to house and exhibit Rollins’ art collection, and to provide a place to teach, research and expand Rollins’ outreach to the surrounding community. It was important to provide a facility that was expandable, flexible and architecturally sensitive to Rollins picturesque campus architecture. With the exception of the building entry and lobby, one of the greatest design challenges was to design a windowless building with 360 degree views that were architecturally pleasing and significant. This was done by carefully crafting the building mass and using stylistic elements such as buttresses, a water table base, slate and travertine infill to this textured stucco building. Inside, there is a state-of-the-art lighting and air conditioning system to protect the environment for the preservation of art.

President’s ResidenceRollins College | Winter Park, Florida


The residence was designed to house the President of Rollins College and his or her family on campus. It was important to provide a home with dignity, yet one that has an understated elegance and visually belonged on the college campus since the school’s opening in 1885. The design was inspired by the idea that the home began as a simple one-story cottage, and over time, there were multiple additions which allowed for very little symmetry in its mass and composition. It is through this thinking of informality—a playful approach to form and function—that the understated elegance was realized. Through the use of appropriate elements of style, historically correct detailing and rich materials, the design realizes the home’s dignity for a Rollins College President.

Welbourne Graduate Housing Rollins College | Winter Park, Florida


The project was an adaptive re-use of residential apartments into modern progressive loft apartments. The objective was to create a modern progressive environment for graduate students attending Rollins.

As a stark contrast to the traditional Mediterranean Design found on Rollins campus, ACi created this clean, modern expression with New York-type loft interior designs with stained concrete floors, exposed block walls and concrete ceiling. The exterior is of a Bauhaus Modern design and is in keeping with the mandate of modernism: the expression of the forms and materials is honestly expressed and devoid of trivial ornamentation. Additionally, the U-shaped building allowed ACi to create a study/social courtyard with a specimen Live Oak as canopy or umbrella for this new “outdoor room.”

Lawrence Center - Facility / Student Residence StudyRollins College | Winter Park, Florida


The planning study was initiated by the college to determine if The Lawrence Center property would yield a density that would both elevate the deficiency in faculty and student housing and meet allowable zoning dimensions.

Rollins Lacrosse Field - StudyRollins College | Winter Park, Florida


Facilities Concept Study for a new Rollins Lacrosse Athletic Facility was the result of a collaborative effort led by the College’s Administration, Real Estate Advisor, Rollins Athletic Department, the Tars Lacrosse Men and Women’s Coaches and ACi. The effort was conducted over a four week period employing strong core stakeholder participation, site visits, and four valued creative workshops at ACi’s Winter Park Studios. The purpose of the study was to define initial guiding principles and key assumptions so Rollins could make informed decisions regarding the colleges’ continuing transformation of its athletic programs and master plan.

Services included visioning, comparable college Lacrosse program analysis, master site planning, facilities programming, architecture, preliminary cost estimates and a facilities implementation schedule for review and presentation to the Board of Trustees. Facility program elements included spectator arrival/departure entry experiences, parking, field/stadium gateways, food/beverage concessions, playing and practice fields, practice walls, ticketing/admissions, press room, athlete hall of fame, coaches offices, training, conference rooms, home/visitor locker rooms, restrooms, equipment storage, initial bleacher seating with expansion capabilities, sound/public address systems, field lighting, scoreboard, Lacrosse NCAA standards for fields/layouts, on-field goals/nets/team bench seating and fencing.

One of the most interesting and differentiating features of the design is how it creates a smaller unique “athletic facility experience”. In order to recruit the best student-athletes in the country and “grow the alumni experience” through athletics, ACi’s design focused on the quality of experience vs. size of the athletic facilities. This included the pageantry, tradition and use of multiple “venue elements” including the arrival/departure experience, i.e., tailgating, field alumni recognition events, and architectural style. This approach helped the college symbolize the “ivy league” quality of academics and athletics found at Rollins and at other smaller private institutions. Additionally, there are multiple venue building elements for students, alumni and friends of the college to provide financial support including brick plazas, arrival/departure entrances, field admission gates, scoreboards, building name, fields, bleachers, and future connecting buildings, fields and facilities.

Annie Russell Theatre Historic Renovations Rollins College | Winter Park, Florida


For over 75-years, The Annie Russell Theatre is the crown jewel of the Rollins College Theatre program and is Florida’s oldest and longest running theatre. ACi was contracted by the college to renovate this national registered historic building and bring the structure up to modern compliance codes. Tasked with completing the renovations before the theatre’s opening season, our team used strategic problem solving techniques to not only complete the project on-time, but go above and beyond the college’s expectations.

Black Box Theatre - Conceptual DesignRollins College | Winter Park, Florida


The Black Box Theatre is a vital new addition to the Theatre program at Rollins College. This 2-story 25,000 GSF facility was designed with interior facility in mind and the architecture is reminiscent of the Italian Lombardy style of the theatre program home – The Annie Russell Theatre.

This approach, unique to education, allows online web conferencing and discussions boards for educators to develop fun, entertaining and interactive educational platforms, which intertwine both visual and audio learning. By creating their own evolving educational platform from the ground level up, students from all over the world are guaranteed to be on the forefront of the ever changing world of technology.

3D Animation Computer LabFull Sail University | Winter Park, Florida

Full Sail’s Computer Animation program is one of the top animation programs in the nation that prepares students for an exciting and successful career. ACi was contracted to create a stimulating learning environment that enhanced the student’s education by implementing the latest tools, applications, and design theory used to create 3D content for different media platforms.

The new computer animation classrooms include smart desks allowing students to connect the network enabling them to download class course work and encourage participation. In addition, each room also includes state-of-the-art Apple computers, connected to the campus-wide network, allowing students to work in class or from any

Audio Mixing LabFull Sail University | Winter Park, Florida


The Audio Mixing Lab and Classroom was a new 1000 SF classroom dedicated to the instruction of the art of digital sound mixing. Located in Full Sail Live, a venue for the live performances of music, the students would get real world education by recording live artists then retreating to a laboratory setting with full sound mixing equipment to learn how to digitally control and enhance the recordings for the final cut.

This Classroom was equipped with 12 full level professional mixing boards and room for the instructor with internet access, projection and sound. A high level of acoustical separation was required for this room due to the adjacency to the live venue and the need for the room to be very quiet for the mixing of sound. Adjacent to this lab, ACi further designed a Lab where students are instructed on how to break down the recording and mixing devices and repair the electronic boards. This room required special exhaust systems for the use of soldering.

Film Make Up LabFull Sail University | Winter Park, Florida


Make-Up Lab where 40 students would be instructed on the art of movie “make-up” and special effects. The design of this room incorporated 40 stations equipped with digital interaction, large mirrors and specialty lighting. Care was required for the mechanical equipment due to the noxious fumes of the movie makeup and special isolated sinks for the disposal and cleanup. One of the unique features of the this room was the incorporation of two way mirrors at the first 10 stations so students and prospective students could walk down the entry outside and witness a student in real time applying the make up to transform someone into a movie character. This has proven to be a very unique and successful sales tool for the University.

FULL SAIL CINEMA

UF Athletic Association - New Spring Sports Facilities University of Florida | Gainesville, Florida *


Facilities programming, planning, architecture, engineering and construction administration for expanding and renovating UFAA’s major Spring Sports fields and facilities including baseball, track and field, tennis, swimming and golf. Scope of work included fields, tennis courts, pool/pool equipment, lockers, restrooms, training, equipment storage, field lighting, scoreboard, batting cages, landscaping, graphics/signage and bleacher seating including light colored fabric canopies and open air pavilion structures to protect and comfort fans and players from the rain

and heat.

UF Athletic Association - Concept Study for New Football North End Zone Renovation/Expansion at Florida Field University of Florida | Gainesville, Florida *


As part of UFAA’s continuing athletic facilities master planning process and UF Alumni fundraising efforts, created a conceptual physical 3-D model for expanding Florida Field’s existing north end zone facilities in terms of seating, sight line constraints, new amenities, scoreboard and site/stadium circulation. Project was later funded and implemented by the UF Facilities Planning and Construction.

Hecht Athletic Center - Athletic Facilities Additions and Renovations University of Miami | Miami, Florida *


Addition/renovations to the existing football facilities to build the new 20,000 SF Hecht Athletic Center for new coaches/administration office complex including offices, conference rooms, film projection rooms, trophy lobby, and renovate existing training room, lockers, strength equipment room and sauna/restrooms. Other elements included practice field modifications and new parking areas. Services included architecture, interior design, furniture selections and coordination with building systems engineers and contractors.

Based on the Owner’s near and longterm vision for its growing Hollywood vertical campus, ACi created an infill expansion concept for this internationally renowned film making, game production and computer animation school.

ACi’s concept was inspired by old and new Hollywood heritage, using architectural metaphors to reflect the unique uses of the building including film shapes, color and software driven “story-telling surfaces” that allow student films and achievements to be displayed on the exterior of the building.
