F rom theillus tra tion you call see that the mo s t notable differencefrom carburetion is tha t the fuel is not mixed with theair until the ai r has very nearly reached the cylinder ,In the carburetor fuel and air are mixed in the venturiand the inta ke manifold t ra nsport s the mi xture to thecy linders : in a fuel injection system th e manifold carrieson ly a ir a nd the fuel is sprayed unde r pressure into t heai r st ream . either at the intake va lve port or in thecylinder itself . The big difference is in th e factthat the manifold is not required to transport fue l/alrmixture. It has been manifold limitations which haveca used many carburetion problems and wh ich led GMengineers to develop a new fuel in jection sys tem.

    AIR FLOWIn a carbureted fuel system the intake manifoldmust strike a happy medium between low an d highspeed requiremeDts. At id le for " instance. air flow isvery slight and in order to keep the gasoline mjxed withthe air , it is n ecessary to ha ve small passages to keepup th e air veloc ity. On Ibe o ther hand . when power isrequired. we would like to ha ve as big a manifoldpassage as possible. to allow ma ximum breathing of theengine. Naturally. to supply both of these requirements,the maJ1.ifold mUSt be a compromise between small andlarge passages and results -in passages of medium size Qwhich limit both th e low and high speed performance.bu t provide enough of each to get by.In the case of fuel injection, the manifold does no thave to carry a fuel/a ir mixture and . therefore, can bedesignl'd to give the bes t breathing possible . In factthe manifold can be made to actually supercharge theengine at certain speeds. This is done by haVing arampipe for each cylincfer so that the air on its wa y tothe cylinder will be traveling in a long column.while the val ve is open and air is entering the cylinder,the air flow gets quite a lot of momentum in the rampipe. As the piston reaches bottom dead center andstarts ba ck up. air will continue to Bow into the cylinderbecause of air veloci ty in the ram pipe. At the particular

    engine speed where th e va lve just closes as the air stopsflowing . an extra cha rge of air has heen trapped in thecy linder. This effect is caHed dynamic super charging;by des ign of th e ram tubes a par ticular engine speedcan be picked fOf this effect to occur and quite a boos tin torque res ults at that pa rt icular point .

    GM SYSTEM FEATURESThe new fuel injection system is unique in severalrespects. The system contains a float controlled fuelreservoir fo r the high pressuregea! pump, which e l i m ~ inates th e need fo r a pump overflow line to the gas tank.

    With this design there is always fuel available forstarting. Since the gear pump is in the reservoir, nopump plumbing is required.To avoid vacuum effects on the nozzle orifice whichhave caused previous trouble with continuous flow systems a vented fuel nozzle was designed in which thefuel is sprayed directly into atmosphere, across an airduct and through a small hole into the intake manifold.With this type of nozzle, vacuum effects arc nearly nilan d positive fuel control at all speeds is possible.     BASIC FUEL CONTROLAir entering the system passes through a venturi

    and causes a vacuum which indicates directly theamount of air flow. This venturi vacuum, plus the loadon the engine, as indicated by manifold vacuum, p r o ~ vides a control signal which indicates how much fuel r\.pressure should be supplied for the correct fuel/air L{ratio. If air flow increases fuel pressure must increase.If engine load increases fuel pressure must increase.When air flow or engine load decreases, pressure isdecreased also so that fuel flow is less. Therefore, fuelflow will always be in relation to the amount of air thatis flowing an d the load on the engine.

    The GM system has three basic parts - (1 ) theai r meter, which must supply ai r in answer to thedriver's foot and send a control signal to the fuel meter:(2 ) the fuel meter which pressurizes the fuel and feedsthe correct pressure to the nozzles in answer to thecontrol signal from the air meter; (3 ) the intake m a n i ~ fold supplies air from, the air meter to the engine andcontains a ram pipe for each cylinder.     FUEL PRESSURECONTROL

    Pressure from the gear pump must be regulated toprovide the right flow at the nozzles. Fuel in the metering system can go either io the nozzles or throughanother passage back to the bowl. through spill ports.The quantity delivered is controlled by a plunger whichmoves vertically to close or open the spill ports. Inother words, if high spill is allowed delivery pressureis lowered or if low spill is allowed delivery pressureis raised. For high fuel flow high pressure would heneeded an d the spill plunger would be moved down tocover the spill ports and force more fuel through the

As shown in th e illustrationyou could imagine the spill plunger position as beinga direct result of the driver's foot on the acceleratorpedaL When the driver pushes the accelerator andasks more power, the plunger moves downward to raisethe fuel pressure. On the other hand. when the driverlets up on the accelerator. the spill plunger rises anddecreases the fuel pressure.
