e FEBRUARY
2014
A Note from the PTA Co-PresidentsWe hope you are all finding ways to stay warm and healthy in this ongoing bizarre winter we are having!
February is gearing up to be a fun month at Steck and will include the always fun and popular Steck Science Fair! The Science Fair will take place on February 3rd from 6pm to 8pm and will include a performance by Mr. Freeze again this year! Even if you do not have a child parCcipaCng in the science fair, please consider coming out to support are excited young scienCsts and enjoy the Mr. Freeze performance. This event is open to the enCre Steck community and is always a good Cme! Special thanks go out to Micki Olawaye for her Creless planning of this event year aHer year. We appreciate her efforts to
bring quality STEM events to Steck so much!!
ValenCne’s Day is approaching and the Cme honored tradiCon of handing out valenCnes is so much fun for the kids! As a reminder, this is an opConal acCvity and Steck has a very firm NO FOOD rule when it comes to handing out valenCnes in the classroom. Your individual teacher may have other rules or guidelines and will communicate those to you, so make sure you check with them before you purchase anything!
Thank you to all the parents who turned out for our last general PTA meeCng in January. The representaCves from district 204 did a great job presenCng info and answering quesCons about the new ELA curriculum. We hope to
see you all at our next monthly meeCng on Wednesday February 19th at 9:30am in the Steck MPR (the Steck PTA alternates morning and evening meeCngs throughout the year at membership request).
Have a wonderful month! Kathy Lengiewicz & Kerry ClemmCo-‐Presidents

IPPC Update
The 2014-‐15 District 204 School Calendar is now available online at hep://ipsdweb.ipsd.org/News.aspx?id=60030. Notes of interest: Later start date; 2 Tuesdays off in November -‐ one for ElecCons and the other is Veteran’s Day per teacher contract.
District 204 has released a tentaCve new last day of school for the current school year of June 4 due to cold weather school closures in January. The teacher work day will be moved to AFTER last day of student aeendance. This date could sCll change if further emergency weather days are needed.
District 204 has provided and posted signs prohibiCng firearms in each school building per specificaCons of the new concealed carry laws. In most cases you will see these on the door of the main entrance to your school building.
A new Online Learning ConsorCum (D200, D203 & D204) will begin with 10 course offerings in the Fall of 2014 at the high school level. Currently working with Evergreen, naConal experts on online learning, to develop curriculum. The goal is to add elementary and middle school classes over the next 5 years.
District 204 Administrators have been working on new ELA Curriculum for 2.5 years and it will be rolling out in Fall 2014. Materials will include newly purchased texts, and the “Great Book Shuffle” – where the district moves texts from where they were to where they are needed with new standards. In February, teachers will receive ONE copy of new texts, addiConal student texts will be delivered in the spring. All materials children will need for instrucConal learning will be provided by the district. A discussion among members in aeendance included concern that some changes to Word Study/Spelling programs are being rolled out this year but are not being well-‐communicated to parents. The district is invesCgaCng how to improve this.
Technology Update: For 2014-‐15 school year, student to laptop raCo will be 5:1 as D204 prepares for PARCC assessments. Devices such as iPads, iPods, tablets, etc. are IN ADDITION to the 5:1 student:laptop raCo. D204 is purchasing light, thin laptops with longer baeery lives because iPads are not working for assessments in other districts due to not having keyboards or BlueTooth accessibility.

Steck Families! The PTA will be selling coupon books for the spring fundraiser this year. We are selling them earlier so each family can benefit from having more time to use the wonderful coupons. Please see the next page for a sneak peak of what coupons will be available and more details about the fundraiser. On Monday February 10th; look for a copy of the coupon book in your Steck student’s backpack. Take some time and look through the book and if you would like to take advantage of the money saving opportunities you will find simply send back a check made out to Steck PTA for $25.00. If you don’t want to keep the book please send it back to school with your child. Each teacher will keep track of who has paid for the books or has sent them back to school. Your check or book is due back to the school by February 21st. There will also be an option to purchase additional books for family, friends and/or neighbors. If you get 5 sales, your book is free!! We are excited to offer a fundraiser that benefits everyone, the coupons in the book will pay for the book itself and 50% of the cost of each book goes directly to Steck. Everybody wins! Questions?
