When architects 3S were asked to design a 21st century apartment complex with retail space along Chiswick’s bustling High Road, they were very conscious of the opportunity to raise the architectural style in the area. The site of the old Job Centre on the corner of Kings Place, the project called for a highly imaginative yet sensitive response. Rather than produce a pastiche of the High Road’s finest buildings, the designers took these as their inspiration, creating a new interpretation of retail and residential architecture that would take Chiswick into the 21st century.
Look closely, and you’ll see how the architecture adopts the symmetry of the neighbouring buildings. The new shop fronts are set back in line with their neighbour but have an elegant colonnade in front. To the west elevation, a sleek horizontal plinth highlights the apartments’ entrance and the parking access, while the building steps down dramatically to the rear to meet the height of the houses behind.
Above, the design of the apartments reflects the more vertical emphasis of the Victorian terraces, with the penthouses set back to preserve a similar building height. Living spaces are projected forward and bedrooms recessed behind terraces, with the sliding timber screens introduced to enhance the sense of privacy. However, rather than stack window over window and balcony over balcony, 3S organised this series of ‘cubes’ into an alternating rhythm. The result is a masterful manipulation of light and shade, space and solid that has already been highly commended in the 2013 Sunday Times British Homes Awards.

The Chiswick Corner Haus incorporates balconies and terraces in various forms, from the screened recessed open areas with views up and down the High Road to the minimalist render and glass balconies that appear to have been punched out of the side of the building. Glass balustrades sweep around the penthouses, which have generous paved roof gardens. On the south side of the building, an expansive communal terrace has been designed
to bring people together. Part paved, part laid with an artificial lawn, and with timber benches set among raised planters, this delightful garden offers an exclusive retreat for all the residents of The Corner Haus. In addition, a number of first and fourth floor apartments benefit from a large private garden of its own, while ivy and honeysuckle have been trained over the timber screening to the rear of the building.
